Dawnstar Crashes My Game

ShreddedNinja

Recommended Posts

Whenever I get within a certain undetermined distance from Dawnstar my game crashes. The only mod I have that effects anything in Dawnstar is one that revamps the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary there. I even disabled my mods that would effect other cities and towns but nothing. I have a quest in Dawnstar so any help is appreciated so I can complete it without console commands. Steam isn't helping me so I'm hoping to find better answers here. Load Order found below

I'm having the same exact problem, I had dawnstar by Arthmoor and it was working fine. But then mid play through I installed merchants of tamriel by the beyond bruma team. I had no idea it would conflict, but unfortunately it broke that save. I've since deleted the merchants of tamriel mod and started a new game, but dawnstar remains broken. So I tried again uninstalling dawnstar by arthmoor as well this time and started a new game. It is still broken! I have no idea if theres some document inside the skyrim se folder that saves info or something with the mod that keeps trying to do something with dawnstar and thats why it crashes but I haven't found anything. If I do ill try to remember to comeback here and let you know what i've found.

Hi guys, for those types of errors there are a few ways to tackle them. You can use tools like xedit so you can check which mods directly overwrites the dawnstar mod, disable them and test, if you use mod organizer you can check if there are any resources that overwrites the mod and disable them and test. Also you can check if the game crashes with the dawnstar mod disable to make sure that the crash is involved with that mod. You can also, start a new game and go to the same location to see if it also crashes if it doesn't it could be a corrupted save, if it is you can try backtracking until you find one that doesn't crash; note, if this is the case that means that you have some existing issues with your mod configuration and the same thing will happen again eventually until the game is too corrupt and you won't be able to load it or u might have many other different issues that will render the game unplayable, so in my opinion is best to try and fix the issue and start a new game. Unfortunately it will be a lot of trial and error while debugging until you find the specific mod that is causing the error, if you're lucky it wont. Once you find the mod causing the error you can check if there are any updates, also read the forums or post to check if it has been reported and or solution for it. Worst case scenario you will have to consider replacing it with a different one.

Hope this helps, Cheers!

I tend to agree with the quickness of disabling the Dark Bortherhood addon. Of course doing the necessary housekeeping on your save file prior to using it again in the game, after disabling the mod

I

PS> disable mod, not plugin, not uninstall mod. Afaik, disabling the mod will render its plugin and its resources "dead", disabling a plugin alone does not necessarily lock off the whole mod (so can still cause conflicts or whatever), and usually uninstalling a mod is an unnecessary hassle unless it's the fix that's needed (many mods are very large and even with premium take a long time to download, eg, the recent skyrim retexture mod)

So anyway, if disabling it fixes things, it's easy enough to create a custom load order rule for a mod (at least in Vortex, I'd presume similar in MO2/NMM) , so you could just push the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary addon to the literal end of the load order (within reason and practicality) to do a worst-case test and see if it's load order, or maybe something else (some bug in the mod, obscure patch you never installed along the way because at the time you'd never have thought you'd ever install that "dark whacha-ma-call-it" mod, etc) . That is, once you validate the idea that a) it IS the Dark Bortherhood mod, and b) it's this Dark Brotherhood addon's load order that's at the heart of the issue, you can always load it earlier (change the custom rule) once you establish it can be loaded at all...

As I said, I uninstalled all the mods I could think of effecting dawnstar at all and I'm still crashing upon nearing dawnstar. Every time I uninstall a mod I start a new game also. Its very confusing.

I had a similar problem while using LAL. When I started in Solstheim I couldn't get off the island, and even when opted to start in Helgen (while using it) I'd crash when getting anywhere near Riverwood. As soon as I disabled it, things went just fine, although I am locked to starting new games in Helgen, complete with the wagon ride.

Try disabling Live Another Life (the mod not the plugin), just for sh and giggles, and then try a new game. Unless of course you already tried that.

If that's the case that tells you that your issue does not involve any dawnstar mods. Which makes things a bit more complicated and confusing as u mentioned. In this case the best way to troubleshoot is if the game crashes even with a new game, then you will need to disable all plugins and run a new game activating, let's say, 5 mods at a time, until the game crashes again; once it does then you'll know that the mod causing the issue is between those 5 mods. You can then uncheck 1 mod at a time till you find the troublemaker. Hopefully u dont have 374 plugins like myself, or this process will take some time lol.

Cheers!

Thanks for the replies, I kinda figured id have to do something like that. I'm kinda dreading the process though. Maybe I will do it this weekend.

I know this is an oldish post but I wanted to at least share what I did to solve the same issue.

My game would crash every time i tried to activate Dawnstar. Even the prompt icon showing up on the screen would CTD.

So since the beam of light fills the sword and then activates a cut scene with lighting. I decided to turn on Realistic Lighting mod. (Realistic Lighting Overhaul v5.0.4 - All in One Installer)

Which turned out to be the problem on my end. I disabled the mod, started the game, finished the quest, placed the sword in my home and enabled the mod afterwards. No problems.

Hope this helps someone down the road.

You're thinking of 'Dawnbreaker' my dude. Dawnstar is a town.

Disabling RLO didn't solve my issues of crashing around Dawnstar. I can go to Dawnstar actually, but an area to the South West of Dawnstar crashes my game and I cant figure out why.

EDIT: I fixed my problem. After having uninstalled every single mod, I was still crashing every time I walked beyond a certain point southwest of Dawnstar. I even reinstalled the game, and nothing. I then verified the integrity of my game files, and now it's working. I was able to reinstall all my mods and the problem seems to be fixed. I also loaded a save earlier so that may have influenced it too.(But doing this before verifying files still crashed my game, so loading an earlier save wasn't the fix.)
