CK fatal error. One cause identified (on my PC, anyway)

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Over the years a lot of us have experienced this. I don't want to be told to set bEnableAudio to 0. I know about that. Anyway, I mostly have it set to 1 and I don't get regular crashes. I also have Creation Kit Fixes SSE. I can listen to sound descriptors to my heart's content. No, this is something else.

It's a rare occurence... but no less annoying when it happens! :wallbash: Who enjoys losing even 10 minutes of work?

It has happened occasionally, always after editing in CK and closing CK to play the game to test. I close the game after a successful test*, then I go back into CK to continue working.

* Enter the dream-world: (All my tests are succesful... don't know why I bother testing, really, I'm that good! All of my concepts are excellent and I never fail to implement them in a blindingly adept fashion!)

"Ooh! I've just woken up after a very strange dream about being the best Skyrim modder ever. I found myself typing a post. I must have been sleep-typing. Let's get back to reality, quickly..."

Exit from the dream-world!

I open CK to do something else, save and... 'Fatal Error; The Creation kit has...' Aaargh! you *!{#@ piece of ^&*@! What was that for?

It can happen repeatedly, unless you intervene manually. Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete and open 'Task Manager'. If you see any Skyrim SE application running, shut it down. No more crashes.

I don't know why this occasionally happens on my PC, but sometimes Skyrim SE doesn't shut down properly and continues to run in the background. I use Steam, if that's relevant.

Since I found this, I'm in the habit of using task manager to check before I save in CK. If there's nothing (normal) you don't need to check any more. It'll be safe.

99 (or more) times out of a hundred, nothing is running, but for that 1 time that makes you feel like throwing the PC through the window, it's worth checking!

I'll happily reply about 'bat' files that "I haven't got a clue, mate!"

I'm fine with using programs like CK, Nifskope etc, but writing batch files to alter the way my PC works? Poof! Clean over my head. That sort of thing is reserved for Gandalf and Harry Potter!

if you can tell me how to do it (in simple terms, I'm a simple person), I can try.

The purpose of the post was to alert people to this cause of fatal errors. If you can add something to tell me and any other readers how to cure it, that's great!

In the meantime, I'll just use Ctrl-Alt-Del and kill any processes manually.

As I said, it's a real rarity. Still annoying, though.

The reverse can happen as well, can't load the CK because steam is holding the process hostage. The only way is to restart steam.. sometimes you gotta kill this process called booststrap or whatever its called. This is rare for me though.
