Save Numbering Problem

OK, so I had save games that numbered up to 749 in my saves directory.

I zipped them all up, and moved the zip to another drive and deleted ALL of the saves in the save directory.
COMPLETELY EMPTY.

I started a new game, I save the game using the Escape-->SAVE Menu, and my save game is numbered 750, instead of 1.

Am I overlooking something in the Oblivion.ini file?

It was a completely empty Save Folder, it should've started at 1

Just to try it again, I started ANOTHER New Game, I saved with the ESC---->Save Game menu, and once again Save 750

GOG version of Oblivion, using Vortex, No Profiles

I've even tried renaming the save from "Save 749 - Character Name - Anvil, Level 1m Playing Time 00.48.15.ess" to "Save 1 - Character Name - Anvil, Level 1m Playing Time 00.48.15.ess"

And the next save I make, ends up being ""Save 749 - Character Name - Anvil, Level 1m Playing Time 00.48.15.ess"

When doing some research yesterday on the similar save problem that gpstr1 is having I looked through Oblivion.ini (and my old character's Oblivion.ini file backups) for just what you've looked for, to no avail. I too was fairly certain that there was some INI entry (something like the screenshot numbering thing) but searching with my Mark I eyeballs and by using Notepad's Find there seemed to be nada.

Only thing I could suggest HadTo is maybe move or rename Oblivion.ini so that the game generates a new one (which of course will then require you moving over your INI edits from the backup ... yup Strker knows the hard way to do anything, if you care to ask).

The only ini setting I could find that remotely sounded like it did something was this: iSaveGameBackupCount=1

The STEP guide mentions it, you can set it to -1, 0, 1, however they don't say what it does.

There's some setting SOMEWHERE that is maintaining my save count, no matter if I start a new game or not

Tried deleting the Oblivion.ini and starting new.

The game STILL makes a Save 750

I just did a test, and a new game save in the tutorial dungeon (just after Renault gets killed and my save number just advanced from my current save number with the other info (character name, level, location etc) for the test guy.

Something that just popped into my head ... do you have Oblivion.ini set as read only (I do)?

@Striker879 Oblivion.ini isn't set to read-only

@DrakeTheDragon That was my next thought.

Since I use Vortex, what I did was rename my Profile from DEFAULT to Profile 1, and Cloned it, and named the Second one Profile 2.

Then I switched back to Profile one (With Saves turned on), and saw that it had created a separate profile folder for savegames.
Then I started a new game with Profile 1, and can save my game, starting from 1, 2, 3 etc.

So now I'm wondering if it's a Vortex thing, that if it uses a DEFAULT Profile, the savegame number will just keep climbing no matter what, which means that number is saved somewhere by Vortex.

And yet I had the same in a non-Vortex install (though I didn't remove all of my saves from the Saves folder beforehand ... could maybe have something to do with my results).

- Edit - Ya I just did the new game test but this time moved all my saves to backup and the new character saves started at number one no problem.

I also don't know how it could even technically be a Vortex-introduced issue, if the filename is generated by the game.

Though I've read a lot of statements saying the savegame count is "also" determined from the highest numbered save in the folder. Making a new folder would zero that. But wasn't it also said this was done before and the numbers remained the same?

But as the number is also stored inside the header of the savegame file itself, I'm not sure if simple renaming will do any trick. And yet, I've also read of people doing just that and it working before. This seems to be quite the oblivion'esque issue situation. We'll never guess the culprit as we just can't believe it is what it is.
