Skyrim SE Terrible Distant Terrain/Objects Rendering and DynDOLOD

Ok so I have been adding in various mods and everything seems to be going fine, apart from two things(well three things but i'm sorting out the third, which just the the clouds not being something I liked and after my brother pointing out the night sky I decided to change the night sky mod I had to something different)

Anyways, the problems I am getting is texture pop ins on occasion which I can live with, but the main issue I really don't like, I can certainly play with, but like to fix if possible, is that the distant terrain and object rendering being really bad, especially when i do the 28 step test and I am going from Riverwood to Whiterun, the landscape coming down from the path around the city is just horrible to look at, now I am thinking it most likely is to do with the mix of mods I have but I do understand that Skyrim doesn't do well with rendering distant terrain/objects in the first place.

Now I wanted to install DynDOLOD but since it requires Skyrim SE to be in an non-special folder I can't get the standalone part installed which I gather from what I have see is required along with the resources pack. Now I was thinking maybe if install it by moving my skyrim se folder to one of my hard drives via steam, get it installed, and then move it back and continue using vortex as is, would this be fine? like would it cause any problems as long as I don't use vortex during this process? I was planning on installing DynDOLOD resources after moving the skyrim folder back to the SSD.

Also I tried to install Terain Lod Redone but it crashed, so I just went with HD Lods Textures SE 1K V9.3 Standard Version instead. I uninstalled the HD Lod Textures to see if it fixed the problem I was having a while ago but it didn't fix it so I decided to reinstall it and just continue because everything else was fine, just the distant terrain looked nasty, especially from Riverwood to Whiterun.

I still have alot of mods to add, like I am planning on adding mods that change the urban areas and maybe some buildings and stuff next, also the audio overhaul mod. but before all that I want the graphical and wilderness mods to be all sorted. Hope all of this helps and if you have any suggestions or anything then you may let me know, I'm not the best person when it comes to modding but then this game seems to be pretty stable at the moment, the only thing I have done so far is to reduce the speedmult when i do the fly around stress test as more mods get added, started at a speedmult of 5000 and now I have gone down to 1500 which it seems to be able to handle fine.

I'll see if I can get some screenshots when i go into testing the game after posting this. If anyone could reply and maybe help me me out or respond to my DynDOLOD and Distant Terrain/object rendering issue that would be great thx

What do you mean by "non-special folder"? For DYNDOLOD to work it doesn't matter where your game is installed.

You download DNYDOLOD resources and add it "from file" to your mod manager. In Vortex you would simply go to the "mods" tab and drag it to that "add mod" square at the bottom. Then you can install and enable DYNDOLOD resources like every other mod.

The DYNDOLOD executable files can be placed literally anywhere on your computer. Make sure to read the instructions in DYNDOLOD/docs and follow them.

I got my Skyrim SE installed in a custom location, DYNDOLOD isn't even on the same SSD drive. Everything works fine.

I'd suggest to finalize your load order and mod setup regarding landscape, building and landscape textures before using DYNDOLOD. For consistent results, everything regarding landscape and buildings should be finished before creating LOD:

So from what i have read, locations such as C:\Windows would be consider a special folders, from understanding it would be the folders which usually you need admin privileges to change things within those folders, and apparently Program Files is one of them and of course my steam is installed in there on my SSD and my SSE is installed in that location and so in a 'special folder'. I know alot of people have their game in a separate location to their storage drive with their OS on it so they would never actually run into this problem as the separate storage drive would have no special folders in it like say the program files folder which is the install default folder.

The error I get when I try to run DynDOLODx64.exe is as follows:

Error: Invalid installation path

C:\Programe Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\

Do not install DynDOLOD Standalone into special Windows folders like Program Files (x86

Yeah that makes sense, I feel like I need to just do some tweaking and I'll put in the mods that change the cities and such and then I'll start on the LOD stuff then, but still, if I can figure out a way to get DynDOLOD working then that would be great. I was thinking about moving the skyrim folder to one of my harddrives temporarily but then I don't know if that will cause any problems?

If I do go ahead with this I would move the folder over to my old hard drive(my new 3TB one only has 16GB of space left...) and then run DynDOLODx64, after that i would move the folder back to my SSD and then run the Resources through Vortex(I already have it in Vortex all ready to go, the resources one works fine but i from my understanding you have to Run DynDOLODx64 first right?)

Thank you for the reply btw

Do not install that exe in C:\Program Files(x86). The reason it is not recommended that you install Steam in program files is that Windows UAC is very touchy about changes made to Program files, as you have discovered. Just put the DynDOLODx64,exe in a different folder, like C: users\your name\SSE DynDOLOD. As Algabar stated the file can be executed from almost anywhere. I would recommend that you move Steam out of Program files to escape problems such as you have encountered. However this is entirely your choice as the game will work fine where it is, you just might have to put a little more work in to get some tools and the game to run.

I realise this may well be quite a dumb question to ask and maybe quite obvious but is there a way to move my entire steam install or even just the games folder to say 'C:\Steam' or 'C:\Steam Games' safely? Because if there is I would like to do this, I don't have enough space to move all of my games to either of my hard-drives even temporarily. I mean cutting the folder out of Program Files into C:\ or 'C:\Steam' cause an issue right? or would that be fine? I hope I make some sense...

Open the Steam home page, in the top left corner click on help, in the search box enter "Moving Steam" it will take you to a guide telling you how to move your Steam installation to another drive or another location on the same drive.

Ok I'll go check that out soon, thank you for the help

  • 4 months later...

Not sure if this was ever resolved for you, but I had a similar issue where terrain LOD textures were rendering in extremely low res, or so it seemed; There are some mods that inject a "noise.dds" file in your data/textures/terrain folder, and if that file is extremely tiny (like 32x32 resolution) your terrain lod will turn to low res mush.

I deleted the file and that fixed the problem

hope this helps someone
