Best Edition of Skyrim for Modding in 2020?

So I've been wanting to get back into Skyrim and I want to do a modded playthrough like I used to but that's been a long time and I'm only recently getting back into modding, and I've been really unsure of what version of Skyrim is best for modding these days? I used to mod my game with over 300+ mods but idk if I'll use that many straight away.

Just hoping someone could please help me out by letting me know whether I should stick with the ol faithful Skyrim Legendary Edition for modding, or if Special Edition is the way to go these days

Cheers

SE. No z-fighting, modding scene more active, better stability, creators of mod lists have been migrating to SE, some popular LE mods haven't been updated in a while, lots of other stuff.

Don't believe anybody who says LE is better. They're peddling snake oil.

Snake oil perhaps, but as long as the mods a player wants aren't updated then they would be playing a game that just ain't in the right corner, I know, believe me, I have played SSE and reverted to LE and the home (the land created with the mods I prefer) I was happy with.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti SSE, and I truely hope that more 'old' mods get updated (strange thing I found was trying to get used to a similar mod to one not available... it just wasn't right)

My experience of SSE was that I didn't want to play as often... but with LE I have a drive to play again, the games we play are for the things we enjoy, that is all I have!

I understand. An important consideration is time and if most of the mods you like to use only exist as LE versions, then it's a no-brainer to use LE. I was in the same boat the last time I did a STEP install as they hadn't changed over to SE at that stage.

However, I've seen lots of posts by LE stalwarts who staunchly and irrationally believe LE is still the better version, even though it's objectively inferior from a technical and playability standpoint.

I find that most mods that haven't been ported work fine on SE and don't actually need anything changed these days. The ones that do are stupid easy to port as well needing to just be run through the SE CK to work and anything else has a new better version out now. So I see little point in using LE

Bethesda promised SE would run LE mods, then changed their minds on release. Since then the modding community largely jumped ship. I think you can only even buy LE now through Humble Bundle and it still requires Steam to play it(despite Steam delisting it on their own store)- or not since going to the game's page there kicks to the main store page. The only new mods I even look at are on here, since anything covered on Youtube is 99% guaranteed to be SE only.

The only option I have to play SE is either a new PC, or to swap the motherboard for one that can take a better CPU- which will probably mean a lot of other component replacements if anything I have isn't compatible. The E8600 is specced too low for SE despite all my other hardware being more than adequate, so it will either not run at all or somehow be a sluggish mess not worth the trouble. I can't get anything better. I already spent $150 on upgrading my old PC back in December but I don't have a further budget for more.

They didn't change their minds. SE can run LE mods with a simple conversion that takes minutes to do. Some mods require a little bit more work though but most either run fine (any mod that lacks an esp or esm) and can be played without conversion. Or they need to be loaded in the SE CK changed a little then revert the change and saved to work.
