How can anybody srsly play as a Vampire Hunter?

So I'm roleplaying this character who is part of the Vigil of Stendarr and did all the quests that were added by this mod to the Vigil.

I then uninstall the compatibility patch so that the Vigil is destroyed and go to join the Dawnguard, very impressed by the presentation I go off to the first mission and burn my way through vampire after vampire then I do this neat puzzle and there is this nonchalant vampire talking to me how I am supposed to help her escape and to top it all she is carrying an Elder Scroll.

So as in every good roleplaying game I ask myself what would this character do that just lost all his brothers to vampires and killed a dozen already? Of course I attack and guess what ESSENTIAL!

At this point I quit the game and I'm not sure I can continue to play Dawnguard at least not with this character or as a Vampire Hunter, I might just change her to non-essential kill her and stop the quest.

How am I supposed to take any of this seriously? How can they NOT give you the option to kill her or at least give you any explanation why you shouldn't?

What do you think? Please no spoilers past the first mission.

Well that's Beth for you.

Id just play through Dawnguard normally and then, after all is said and done, console away here immortality and slash away. Breaks the RP a bit, but seeing as there isn't much a choice that would be the best way to maintain it.

You could try and rationalize it as her vampiric powers calming your character and preventing you from killing her (rather than her being arbitrarily immortal) if you need a roleplay reason to not strike her down the moment you meet here.

Thanks for the suggestions.

That is actually a pretty neat idea they could have easily triggered a sort of killcam that showed her using some kind of spell that then forced you to holster your weapons when you were repeatedly beating her. I would have been totally fine with that.

Edit: I just realized you have to join the Dawnguard in order to join the vampires. That just seems really unintuitive, having that as an option is nice but that being the only option I don't know this just doesn't seem well thought out at all.

As a vampire you'd have to get cured join the Dawnguard and then join the Volkhair...

How exactly shoud Bethesda do such a thing? You are using a mod and such stuff wasnt meant to be in the game. Shall they try to make every single situation that can happen to be roleplayable as every single character imaginable?

Also, just as a hint, if you truly roleplay, you can end up in situations where you are forced to do stuff you dont like to do. Forcing situations into something that fits your charakter isnt always the best idea.

I hear you OP, I found myself in the exact same position as yourself....the first time I played DG I had RP'ed my Dovah (a born Werewolf) to have an intense hatred of Vamps and Serana blew my RP...I stopped and had a think about what to do, found a reason just good enough not to kill her there and then...and 'heads up' OP, it only gets worse as you go on....Bethesda figured we would love Serana I guess, our Dovah's certainly don't get a whole lot of choice in the matter...Dovah trust's Serana.....I decided to cut her throat when her presence wasn't mandatory anymore. This same Dovah had wiped out the TG via console removing all their essential status's and console opening the cistern door, that was easy enough and a damned good fight actually.... ....but Serana's ID is different and I am not sure how it works myself, this is hers....: XX002B6C ....I am not sure what the deal with the x's is. I don't have any interest in playing Vamps myself...always roll with the Pure Blood (born) Werewolf and would still love to finish Serana off, but am lost with her ID.

The mods aren't necessary at all. Bethesda should indeed think about the main playstyles or characters and provide a limited set of choices accordingly but in this case my choice should be the norm.

You are a vampire hunter, you are told the vampires want something which is most likely related to Serana I'm assuming its the Elder Scroll and you are handing it right over TO the vampires. Her explanation when you tell her the Dawnguard would want her dead is: "Well look kill me and you've killed one vampire. If people are after me then there's something bigger going on." I'm sorry but that does NOT suffice.

There just isn't any reason why you should trust her you should kill her to secure what the vampires were looking for that is what a vampire hunter does that is what the game even tells you the Dawnguard would want.

I've been trying to kill her myself right now, the xx should be 02 if Dawnguard is at the top of your loadorder. But using "setessential 02002B6C 0" doesn't let me kill her. :(

Edit: Even using kill on her afterwards doesn't work.

I agree completely Niklass....I have to make sure my Dovah (Kane) has not gone after the MQ Elder Scroll to give him a reason not to ask about the Elder Scroll Serana has (he doesn't know what it is) because by all rights he should kill her on the spot and take the Scroll...not quietly hand it over to the Vamps....I don't like the vouching for her either, why would he?

As for her ID, I have also read somewhere that Serana is simply unkillable....my apologies, I can't cite it, can't remember where I read it....I will be trying the update on the mod 'Sneak Tools' next....apparently the 'Slit Throat' option will bump off essential NPC's also....as I already use 'Sneak Tools' for the 'Throat Slit' (how Kane is planning to kill her anyway) it's the next thing I am looking into, see if that will bump Serana off....crossing fingers.
