Material Compatibility.

Short Answer : I know there are a few add-on scripts that allow for BI to cycles and I think there is one that allows conversion the other way around but mileage varies. I would check out the blenderartists forum.

Long answer : If you are using a cycles then you are not using Blender 2.49b. Nothing wrong with that, just remember that you need that version if you want to import/export directly to .nif format. **Side-note** avoid exporting as .obj,....

Currently even the newest Blender plugin development will only support BI materials. We won't be adding cycles support as it does not give us any additional data that is not currently available via BI. Speaking with the Blender devs, there is no current plans to remove BI, should that change then I will have to re-evaluate the situation.

A common misconception is that the rendering in blender -> how it should render in-game. Where possible we map nif properties to renderable properties, but that is not always possible.

That said, I am quite interested in OSL so having game specific shaders is something that I and also the Max developer would like to investigate, at some stage, once we find time......but main development comes first.
