New Vegas - Updating Mods

I'm having a bit of a difficult time trying to update the mods through Vortex. I originally followed Gopher's newest guide on modding Fallout: New Vegas back during the summer. However, I realized that I didn't really have a comfortable place to physically play the game at that time. (My family's building a house, and we've been staying in a trailer temporarily. Now I'm back at college in a dorm building, and have an actual desk) So, I put off finishing the process once I got all of the essentials done. Now I'm trying to finish putting together the list of mods I want to use, but a ton of the mods I've already installed have gotten updates due to xNVSE coming out.

So, I get that without a Premium account, I can't just download things directly from Vortex and I have to manually use the Nexus site. I understand that. I also get that not every mod is updated correctly through the site, resulting in Vortex not realizing that there are any updates. However, when I click "Check for Updates" in Vortex, NOTHING comes up? Okay, I can just go through and check the essentials manually. I just have to at least double-check the various extender plugins.

Now comes the next issue. I download the newest version of the mod (for an example, I'll use the "JohnnyGuitar" plugin)using the "Mod Manager Download" button, so Vortex is handling everything. This is what I did the first time around, this is what I'm doing now. The pop-up arrives to tell me that the download is complete, and I hit "Install". Instead of updating and replacing the existing JohnnyGuitar installation, I now have two separate installations, and I have to identify the older and obsolete version to delete it myself. The "Deploy Order" for that mod goes from 5 to 33 because as far as Vortex is concerned, I've deleted and installed two unrelated mods rather than updating a single mod.

Am I doing something wrong in this process, or is it an error on Vortex's end? I've tried using the "Sort Mods" button to put JohnnyGuitar back in slot 5, but it stays put. Is this going to be an issue? I know I don't have a Premium account, I don't mind checking and downloaded the updated versions myself. But shouldn't Vortex be able to tell from the mod page that the download is coming from that it's an update and ask if I'm replacing the existing mod in my load order? Also, shouldn't the new version of the mod be auto-sorted into the same position as the old version, if it's the same mod?

YES you're doing something wrong, you're knowingly and purposefully hitting INSTALL with the newly downloaded and updated mod, WITHOUT UNINSTALLING the OLD one.

Which is forcing vortex to find a new spot in your load order to place it.

If you had just uninstalled the old version first, and then installed the new updated version, Vortex would've put it back in slot 5.

You can't expect to continue to download update after update and keep installing the same mod numerous times so that you have eleven different versions of the same mod in your load order.

You have to remove the old one first, and install the new one.

When you downloaded the new one, you should've gone through you MOD list in Vortex, and looked for whether the old entry of Johnny Guitar had an Orange Dropdown box with the OLD Version Number in te name

Then you could've just easily clicked on the dropdown, clicked the - to remove the OLD version, and installed the new version.

OR, when you decided to install the updated version without uninstalling the old version, you might have been given a chance by vortex to choose REPLACE the old Mod, or Install a VARIATION

The problem with the Gopher Videos is that they were made way back when Vortex first came out and they really should be updated.

The thing is, just uninstall the old version first, then install the new ersion, Vortex remembers where in the load order the mod was.

1 - I used the videos Gopher made this summer. The first video in the list came out March 18, 2020. They were specifically for New Vegas.

2 - I saw the updated file on Nexus. I looked in Vortex to see if there was an update button or anything, and there wasn't. I clicked on every single "Check for Updates" button and they all came back claiming there were no new updates for any mods, when I could see the update on Firefox just fine. So, my next thought was, maybe if I download the new file, Vortex will notice that it's got the same Nexus ID as the old file and offer to replace the existing file as an update, just like how MO2 does. After all, both programs were made by the same guy, so basic functionality like that should be similar. (Yes, I know about the whole manual sorting debate, but that's different.) No pop-up came up to replace the existing file, and I now had two entries for the same mod with a red lightning bolt for the obvious conflict. So, I removed the original one.

No, I do not have multiple entries for the same mods. I made sure to remove the original versions. However, since I went off of the assumption that there was some sort of procedure for updating the mod in Vortex, and since there didn't seem to be any that went off prior to downloading or installing the new file, I figured it was a check that came up after the install. I was not given any chance or offer to replace the original mod nor was I given any information about mod variations.

Now my updated mods are put in later in the deploy order than they were originally. I don't know how I'm supposed to put it back in the original space other than wiping my load order entirely and start downloading/installing everything from scratch. (If that's indeed the case, I had the foresight to copy the list into NotePad++, so I know which mods and in which order to install them.) Still, if Vortex is able to identify a recommended load order based off of the metadata of the mods and what each mod is intended to do, then shouldn't it have naturally placed the updated version of the mod into the original's space once the original was deleted?

EDIT: I just restarted Vortex to see if that would do anything, and it placed JohnnyGuitar in slot 7 of Deploy Order. So, it'll re-sort my mods, but only after reloading the entire program instead of when I press the "Sort" button? And that doesn't solve the issue with updating anything.

The order doesn't mater if nothing conflicts. Also sometimes that can happen when a mod author adds a new file instead of updating the original. Or at least that's what I think is happening... installing the same mod twice is fine as long as you remove the first and redeploy as this isn't NMM so nothing is actually overwritten.

I think you are just over stressing the issue. It really doesn't matter. Also don't mind Hadto he means well but comes on a bit strong sometimes. He is correct on removing the mod first though... and Vortex should ask you if you want to replace the old file but that comes back to what I said earlier. It happens sometimes.

OK, the thing is "Check for updates" will check to see if an uopdate has been released (The notification system was broken for the past few days, so it wouldn't work in Vortex, nor on the Website)

Thing is, don't over think "UPDATE"

When you see there's an update for a mod,

1. Download the update

2. UNINSTALL the old version

3. Install the new version

Thats it.

Do not keep downloading updates, and installing them on top of the old versions.
