Trying to reduce 500 plugins to within the 255 limit via Merge Plugins

So with my new beefy pc, I wanted mod Skyrim to the fullest, make it new/next-gen-esque. And I started with Sinitar Gaming's Ultimate Modding Guide 4.0 for Skyrim LE, and followed that guide to best of my abilities. However It mentions that all the plugins can be reduced/merged via Wrye Bash, I don't if I'm doing something wrong there or something but I also read somwhere that Wyre Bash no longer merges plugins? Idk. But I've resorted to using the Merge Plugins tool. And since I'm new to most of this, I don't know what mods to merge and not to merge (tho I heard it's not a good idea to merge master files?)

Any help would be apprecieated.

So, Wryebash is a thing to make a "bashed patch"as I understand, it takes small plugins which are usually stuff like some patches etc and merges them into a plugin at the end, and also merges all the "level list" items (like mods which add new items to loot, or where the loot is found, or adds items to certain merchants etc) together so that they can run together and not overwrite one another.

 

Wryebash although is pretty hard up about not having more than 255 plugins, so if you're already over the level, it'll deactivate stuff from the bottom until it gets that number to 255 or lower so it can actually do it's business. building the bashed patch, if it can find mods it can merge, will then disable the plugins it knows it can merge freeing up space, and upon building the patch and turning it on it should list those mods with a + symbol inside their box meaning they're part of the bash and so they don't have to be enabled anymore.

 

Merge plugins (superseded by Zmerge?) is a program that takes specific mods that you tell it to and smooshes their plugin data like references etc together into a single plugin so to free up space while using the mod's existing data files like textures etc. They say to merge only similar mods together, like all your different armor sets and weapons -> all those 20 something patches you might have for legacy of the dragonborn if you need to install a lot of patches from it's patch mods on the side of a variety of different things, or Bijin + Pandorables npc addons so they all sit together and take up less space.

 

Like, I've a similar issue in my game where I've got alteast 500+ plugins and I had to smoosh them down into 12 different large categorical merged plugins plus the bashed patch to get it to the limit. :V It can get a little messy at first if you dunno what you're doing, but gamerpoets on youtube has some good guides on them that I'm pretty sure are listed in sinitar's guides already.

 

edit: wait. rip, gamerpoets doesn't have a zmerge one yet. but Yggdrasil Gaming does. and he covers using it for several modloaders it seems.

Ok I switched to zMerge and managed to get my plugins down considerably. However I'm not yet within the 255 limit and this one last merge I'm trying to get work would probably just about do it. I keep getting this error and I'm not sure what to do about it.

Wryebash stills merges plugins, and latest version IIRC handles more than 255 plugins.

I don't know where you read that WryeBash doesn't merge esps anymore, because that's what it's specific claim to fame is, so whoever is spreading that misinformation around should be told to stop.

Also, it'd be nice if you put that load order in spoiler tags so people don't have to scrolls for miles

Out of curiosity, how many different mods do you have installed and of what sort are they generally? As far as individual folders each installed separately. and how many plugins did you end up having in the end? As I used to be in sinitar's place and had been following the guide other than the requirement that I don't use vortex, since vortex is all I had and I wanted to make it work and it hadn't let me down the last two times I had used it. But eventually got tossed out as a heretic essentially after I started discussing the bug I'm having currently while looking for help with the issue and instead got ridiculed and such for "using bad mods" and stuff like that...

 

But I've got a thread where I've hit a weird bug that I'm trying to find a cause for, which "feels" like overload of content. and I just wanted to know like, how many large mods that potentially use scripts or add entire quests etc do you use vs myself?

 

Since I'm wondering if it depends on the density/complexity of the content of the mods there-in and not necessarily the number of them. cause at a glance I'm feeling your modpack is just large in esps due to a lot of replacers, textures, armors and weapons or existing content improvers compared to mine.

I had like 900 mods installed, 887 of which were active and using TES5Edit, Wyrebash, and zMerge I managed to reduce the plugins down to 255 exactly. However in the end, when I finally launched Skyrim LE, I would come across the occasional bug here and there, but then it became sudden errorless ctd's at random intervals of like somewhere between every 5-10, sometimes 30 minutes if I was lucky. Disheartened and discouraged, I decided to later try again but with SE, thought maybe it'd be more stable. With 1622 mods installed,1618 active, and 1509 plugins thinking "hmm, this doesn't seem like a good idea. I highly doubt this is even going to work at all!" only to then realize at the very end of the "guide" that Sinitar may in fact have made a terrible guide.

 

In terms of guides I would probably recommend either of these two instead:

Basically, don't be a big dummy and follow Sinitar's "guides" installing every mod listed like me. If you do use his guide, be smart about it.

Sinitar is infamous for stating that LE is more stable than SE. As you said, his guides are best avoided.

 

Also, STEP is a great starting point for anyone wanting to build a solid base of 'essential' mods and fixes that work flawlessly together.
