Vortex keeps giving me I/O Error 21

Vortex kinda always wants my D:\ drive which is my DVD drive, despite the game and the folders I want to operate on being on the E:\ drive.

Every time I want to set the Mod Staging Folder to "E:\Mod Staging" it keeps giving me the error telling me the hard drive is possibly disconnected. As a result it won't allow me to reassign the mod staging folder to the proper location.

Is there any way of solving this?

Sounds to me like you had some drive reconfiguration at some point, and Windows helpfully chose how to reassign drive letters to the volumes. Was the location of Vortex previously on drive D: but at the time that represented the same physical disk or volume where it still is now?

I think it might help if you put some actual media into the DVD drive, give Windows something to access. Then the error might not occur and you can proceed with reassigning it in Vortex.

You're trying to set the mod staging folder from this screen?

...

Yes that's the screen. I'd like to know if there's a settings file I could just manipulate from the outside. It doesn't even let me hit "apply" when I reassign the staging folder, it would always go back and give me this error. Initially I also had this bug with the mod download folder, fixing that one was no issue.

When I built my computer it was just the hard drive and my DVD drive. The second hard drive came in a few days later. I can remember a weird case where my computer basically lost all my game shortcuts on the desktop for some reason and I had to reassign all of those which were leading to programs on the secondary drive.

Your problem is that the drive letters changed when you added the third drive

That's why all your shortcuts went 'white'

From the error popup, it looks like a hard drive was actually D:\ at one point, but adding the new drive, bumped the DVD to Drive D:\

ALl you need to do is go into the management console and reassign drive letters before you go and do crazy stuff like uninstall/reinstall etc..

Hello! Idk if you've already found a fix or not, but, I just learned this not too long ago. I also searched for a solution since I recently changed to a new Hard Drive since mine was beyond repair for too many bad sectors. This is also for those who might run into this problem in the future.

When I installed the new HDD, it never gave me the D variable as it was already taken. So I named it from A, and now to G. But still it gave the I/O error as if Vortex was obsessed with drive D. And make no mistake, drive D was there, but it was empty and in the form of CD Drive D. It was annoying since I couldn't eject it. Are you using ISO by any chance? If so, just right click on the "ghost drive", click PowerISO and click on 'set number of" then click "disable" or in some cases "0" and it will disappear after. Now when you open Vortex again, it won't anymore bother you with such trifles.

Just open the Disk Management Console in Windows 10, Change the CD D drive letter to H, then change the G drive to D

Done.

do you have a problem? if so, there's a really useful sticky that can guide you into sharing pertinent information which can be used to help you.

Hmm, well the sticky seems to have vanished into the ether only to be replaced with a new section on the top of the forum, where the sticky is hidden behind a read more tag....so, not that helpful.

but here it is - https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/7332636-how-to-post-request-support-for-vortex/

read that, open a new thread, and put in as much info as you can and someone will come along and help you.
