weird problem with oily faces?

Hey i am new to modding, i recently started trying to get my faces shiny/oiled (whatever you call it)

the body isn't that hard, because i have a separate body and separated textures for it,

let me list out what i have installed now:

I modified these nifs:

headhumanVRD.nif

HeadWoman.nif

HeadMan.nif

THESE FIRST 3 COME FROM AMNES'S MOD!

headhuman.nif (THIS COMES FROM THESE MOD FILES: http://oblivion.nexu....com/mods/42554 )

I use glossmax http://oblivion.nexu....com/mods/41213 to modify hundreds of skin nifs to create the oily effect, which works really good! though, i can't get the faces to shine constantly,

so this is what happens:

All my mods are on except the MaleBodyReplacerV5.esp because this is already used by amnes beautiful characters.

In DMRA BBB Complete Clothing and Armor Replacer is a body included: DMRA tuned/seamles body.

When i am in my character creation screen at the start of the game this suddenly happened (i found out by accident).

I had the imperial race (also worked on woodelf and high elf).

the face skin first looks like this:

after changing the age and complexity to the left. then change the cheek round/gaunt completely to the left. THEN change the eyes to the right from brown to blue, and then i get THIS face texture?WTF!?

And after a reset face, everything changed back like i didn't want it to!

Can someone help me with this particular problem? so i can also change this WITHOUT using the mod amnes beautiful characters?

I tried so many things, but i can't get it to work, which mesh i need to configure to get the right effect like on the second picture continuously.

though i don't know which textures became involved, because i have textures of amnes beautiful characters itself, as from ozmo's HGEC skin textures. I also got his face textures. i don't know which mesh was responsible for this change either!

I have NO IDEA what i am doing wrong anymore! if someone can help me out with this i would be very happy!

Hmm, I'm going on a blind guess here, more or less, but as body part NIFs' material properties ("skin") cannot be changed (or only very little), because the game engine controls and resets them constantly, I'm pretty sure the gloss is achieved via normalmaps ("..._n.dds" files) with a pretty high specularity factor (controlled by alpha channel, so very little transparency here to achieve the gloss).

However, faces also use agemaps, and when agemaps are used they cannot use normalmaps. Normally face textures don't even have normalmaps.

It seems there is a setting which makes it so the normalmap gets used instead of an agemap, and only at this specific setting the face will be that glossy.

I've seen, and done it myself, in quite some mods already that for a smooth and high-resolution skin (agemaps are pretty low-res and make your high-res face accordingly blurry, haven't seen any high-res agemaps so far) agemaps are completely removed and only a normalmap is present. If this was done to the face textures of your race as well, all agemaps removed from the race's textures folder, the normalmap would always be in use, and as such the face would always be glossy like that.

Or did this gloss mod come with a complete package of glossy agemaps as well and they got just reverted to non-glossy by installing another mod over them later?

edit: On the other hand though, the tool says it's modifying the glossyness value in the NIFs, which is something that very well can be modified for bodyparts. But then, if the head NIF's glossyness value is modified, no slider pulling in CharGen can undo this. So it must've something to do with normalmaps or agemaps...

Then again, Oblivion is known for not playing within its own rules, so don't expect anything as granted or always working the way it always works. I know too little about the FaceGen technicalities to say for sure what all else could be up here.

This gloss mod came only with like saying,,, eehm, 20 files? of ears especially, and one head nif file. the fourth that i modified, which supposed to modify my vanilla glossyness. and even though if i modify them with glossmax, the ears become ruined like purple in darker situations. so i replaced them as they were.

As for my textures: there is a .bsa package of oblivion itself with textures. i completely extracted this into the game folder, and after this i deleted every head texture, and started to play around a little, and so i ended up with in FEMALE map textures. which are meant for the amnes mod. and so i found this extremely nicely shiny face ^^. so what you said made a lot of sence! i think it is something with the agemaps! i didn't really new about them so i can take a look at them, maby rename them and asking the author for permission to put this into a special file replacement mod eventually if i get it to work properly and send along the right files!

this is the first time i try to modify such a small detail by myself. i only installed many mods together before. but i decided to retry every one of them and see if i can get the vanilla races to shine first ^^.

and i have experience that not everything works like with the snap of my finger! i had to reïnstall a few times and clean the whole thing.

but i see faster and faster if mods are going to conflict.

So thanks for this information! i think i can do something with this. looks like i have some more time to spend again ^^.
