Can't change adoptable children from mods into followers

Hi, I've got a several mods that add a bunch of adoptable kids around Skyrim, plus the Argonian Hatchlings and Khajiit Kittens merchant mods, etc. Obviously, I can't adopt them all, but if they're recruitable followers, I can use Nether Follower Framework + My Home Is Your Home 2 to achieve the same effect and basically assign them to houses with follower families.

The problem is, I can't for my life turn these mod-added kids into followers. I've tried everything. I removed their adoptable faction from the esp, added the Current Follower faction (tried setting to -1, 0 and 1 at different times), added Potential Follower faction, added the relationship with them as parent, player as child, set to "ally"...I also use Immersive Children, which removes the child flag so that they can be followers...nothing's worked.

That said, I'm brand new to this stuff and am learning through trial and error as I go, so hopefully there's a simple solution that I just don't know about.

Is there a way to use SSEEdit or CK to make any NPC, including mod-added adoptable kids, offer the follower dialogue option? Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

I thought I had found an ideal solution by using NFF's "recruit expendable NPCs" option, which lets you hire basically anyone as a follower. But with the mod-added kids, for some reason it only works once. If I hire a child, then dismiss them, then try to re-hire them or hire any other non-vanilla kid, they just keep saying "you expect me to believe that?" and that's the end of it, can't recruit any of them ever again.

So it seems I need to have them available as normal followers from the start. When I do the things I mentioned above (factions, relationships), they should supposedly offer the "Follow me. I need your help" option, but instead they just look at me for a second and go "hey" or "hi there" or huh?" and no dialogue menu shows up.

I'm at my wit's end here so any help would be very, very much appreciated!

Thanks!
