Very weird fps drop.

I have been playing FNV for a number of years and have never encountered anything like this before. The explanation is rather lengthy so please bear with me.

I started my new game as usual, went thru all the quests with Sunny Smiles talked to the barkeep etc, then went to Primm. Cleared out the hotel, rescued deputy Beagle, got both quests from him and headed back into Primm to talk to the Lieutenant about bringing law to Primm. This is where it gets screwy.

As I started over the overpass just before the guard shack my fps started to drop, the further I went the more it dropped until it hit 0 and froze, I had to log out. I loaded my save just after I exited the casino and tried again, same thing. I did find that if I retreated when my fps first started to drop everything would go back to normal,60fps. I started to experiment. If I traveled to Primm from Goodsprings my fps would start to drop just after the trooper warned me to stay out of Primm and if I went back after it started to drop everything returned to normal So I then fast traveled to the New Vegas Bounties shack from Goodsprings and my fps when I arrived dropped straight to zero.

I have no mods affecting Primm that I know of, although it certainly sounds like a mod conflict. The weirdest thing to me is I went to Primm with no problem, spent the night on that mattress in the top floor of the building next to the guard shack just before the overpass, cleared the hotel and surrounding area rescued Deputy Beagle all with the game running smoothly. Then when I try to go back into Primm my fps takes a nose dive. Now I can no longer enter Primm.

Any ideas?

In general, a drop in FPS is due to increased processing required in an area. This can be caused by more scripts, NPCs (and the accompanying AI packages), and high resolution images among other things. Some of that is load on the CPU, but most tends to be on the GPU.

Given the issue seems to be localized to the Primm area, you need to look into mods that affect that area. Don't forget to include VWD/LOD mods, which affect the exteriors of that area. You need to rebuild the "quads" if you have added or removed any VW/LOD mods to your load order.

If you still don't have any idea as to the mod causing a problem, try posting your load order or follow the 'Mod Conflict Isolation' section procedure of the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" article.

Thank you dubious. What really throws me with this problem is that I went thru this area to get to the Bison Steve Hotel with no problems at all.

Whether it is localized to the Primm area I do not Know. For all I know The same thing could happen in Novac or any other town.

I have no mods affecting Primm, the closest mod to add or delete anything in the Primm area is the New Vegas Bounties shack, unless you count Increased Wasteland Spawn which adds a bunch of bandits in and around the hotel, however I have no problem in and around the hotel.

I believe it was Gamer Poets ini tweaks or one of the other new ini tweaks I installed with this play through, tried to uninstall it but no luck. I think that is the one that has a check list that runs before the game launches. I uninstalled all mods and launched the game with no mods installed and that checklist still ran so I have created vanilla game. I vowed before to not download mods that change ini files, should have stuck by that. I think one of those mods made changes in Fallout.exe tho I do not think a mod author would do that, as I deleted my ini files and created new ones and that check list still ran before the game launched I probably installed one of those mods without thoroughly reading the description, something I have done before to my regret.Which is why I created a vanilla game.

Anyway I will create a new game without any of those mods that make changes to your ini files and see what happens. I do believe it was one of those mods as they were the only new mods I had installed the rest were all mods I had used before in conjunction with one another with no problems.

I am playing the GOG FNV if that makes a difference.

  • 2 weeks later...

I uninstalled the GOG version and installed the Steam version but the same thing occurred. I have a tendency to blame any of these obscure problems on ini tweaks from mods that make changes to your ini files, which is not really fair and certainly was not in this case.

The problem was NVIDIA GeForce Experience which had somehow become corrupted. I completely uninstalled GeForce Experience downloaded it from the NVIDIA site and reinstalled it. That weird fps drop around Primm has stopped. I have not played beyond Primm yet but I am fairly confident that was the cause of the problem, I certainly hope so anyway.
