vortex causing fallout 3 and new vegas to crash?

fallout 3 and new vegas were running fine, but i wanted to try some mods, so i downloaded vortex and and a couple of mods for each. when i tried to open them again they crashed before i got to the main screen. i have tried disabling all the mods, uninstalling them, and finally removing the mods altogether. any help would be appreciated. at this point i would be glad just to be able to play them again even without mods.

(if at all relevant, i only downloaded mods with a vortex download option to start with)

So they crash when you run them through steam too?

yup, they crash when i try to run them through steam, vortex, or off the desktop. i select play, they open, then crash before i get to the menu.

Where do you have your mod staging folders set for the games?

What mods did you install?

i dont actually know what a mod staging folder is. i guess that that is probably where i f*#@ed up.

i had the script exteders for both, fellout for fallout 3, and frontier for new vegas

Frontier has an extensive description of what mods you must install. Follow it - exactly.

i removed it almost immediately after, but new vegas still crashes.

I do not know the specific steps to undertake, perhaps someone else can tell you more about that, but a few months ago a friend of mine had issues with a few games too (F:NV and L4D2). For him it turned out to be a DirectX related issue. I think he had to reinstall or repair the drivers. Again, I do not know the precise steps, but perhaps now someone can help you further!

If it is crashing before you even reach the main screen, then most likely it is a missing master problem.
