Samurai Type Armour, need some advice...

so i am currently making a samurai esque type armour (my modelling crappyness forbids me from using and creating new armours using blender, 3ds max etc, i'm too old of a dog to learn new tricks aha).. so anyway, i can get the new looking armour in game, as the screenies show.. but the way i did it was to duplicate everything to do with the armours used, rename the id's etc i create the new textures then open up the armoraddon for the "new" piece.. i then press on the edit button and it comes up with the location of the nif file and below that a new texture option box. i use this option..

 

now, after that long winded intro lol... i was wondering if this is a safe way to do this? i mean it works for me, but would that be an acceptable way to re-texture armours without having to alter the base nif files? or do i have to possitively duplicate the original nif and alter it to point at the new textures?
