Do materials / NIFs need to have a "smooth spec" texture?

Good evening everybody!

 

Let's say I have a texture and a normal map.

But I do not have a "smooth / spec map" for that texture.

 

Can I still use them in a material file?

Can I just leave the file path for the "smooth / spec map" empty?

 

And could "purple missing textures" on a NIF be caused by a missing "smooth / spec map" in the material file (leaving that empty)?

They don't need an S or an N. A lot of them don't even have one.

Btw. the material file can even without an Specular determine how smooth the object appears.

 

If you've got a purple texture it's searching for a file that doesn't exist.
