First I apologize for I know this has been asked before but i have found many different answers or none at all. I've spent literally my whole day off trying to figure this out. Now Skyrim has been released on game pass and i wanted to replay this on PC. But with all the beautiful mods that are available i said hey I have modded monster hunter and mass effect how hard can this be?? oh boy..... So i've tried MO2 and Vortex but i keep getting this permissions error.

Vortex needs to access a file that is write protected.

When you configure directories and access rights you need to ensure Vortex can access data directories.

This is usually not a bug with Vortex.

executable: C:\Program Files\ModifiableWindowsApps\Skyrim Special Edition (PC)\SkyrimSE.exe

I have mad exceptions in the anti virus programs and followed a lot of other solutions but still get the error. I can't install skyrim in any other directory because game pass does not let you do that. Just to another drive altogether. So it may just a game pass thing but there is an option in the details page of skyrim that does allow you to enable mods for game that support them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is to the best of my understanding...

Vortex can not manage any game packaged as a Windows app. It is a Permissions issue.

It appears that the same restriction applies to Game Pass games.

Creation Club mods for Skyrim SE might work ok, given the way they are packaged. You just can't manage them with a mod manager.

i was kind of coming to that conclusion. Thank you very much for your response :)

The Game Pass version is indeed moddable, both through Bethesda.net in-game and by placing files manually. However, SKSE and SKSE-dependent mods won't work, and no mod manager or tool (currently) will detect it. I made a post documenting my findings on the Steam forum here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/489830/discussions/0/5168416410405391794/

I'm not sure what you mean by the free ones, but the copy I used to test was from my Game Pass subscription. I'd imagine all MS/Windows Store versions work the same way.

What I mean by "Free", is, you can outright purchase the game on Game pass, and you can also play the Game for "free" on Game Pass, for as long as it's offered to play as a Subscription without having to buy it.

You don't need to be running Vortex after you deploy your mods. That's one of the great benefits. Just deploy the mods and close Vortex. Then launch SKSE64.

Note that if you rename skse64_loader.exe to SkyrimSELoader.exe (or whatever the exact names are) you can deploy your mods, close vortex, and then run skyrim exactly like you would run it through Steam, including using remote play and all that.

But it sounds like you didn't follow the instructions for installing SKSE and/or Vortex. Look in the vortex settings and make sure all the paths are where you expect them to be.
