Game crashing after installing mods

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the Nexus and it's the first time I try to install any mod. So, as I expected, the game crashes and shuts down whenever it pleases :ninja: I went all-in, maybe that's why!

These are the mods I installed:

Sooo do you have any idea of what may be causing the crashes? Anything to uninstall? Anything to replace?
Thank you in advance!

Patching the game executable with the 4GB Patch (or the LAA patch... they do the same thing) is de rigueur for a modded game, and will increase the stability of an unmodded install as well.

JB3 textures and Improved Atmosphere both have histories of causing performance issues with the game, so I'd look to them first, as a cause for crashes. (Especially JB3... I really recommend using a select group of mods that address the worst textures in the game without drastically altering the aesthetic... something like my list here or (for a more extensive effort) here.

Your issue may also arise from the method used to install the mods... what installer are you using? (DAUpdater, DAO-ModManager, DAModder, NMM, Vortex, ModOrganizer....?)

A few other thoughts... I notice your list does not include Tucked Hair, which is required for Dragon Age Redesigned to work correctly. Tucked Hair is not on the Nexus, but rather can be downloaded here.

Also, if you are intent on using Improved Atmosphere, double check that you've also installed the latest fixpack from the sticky post on the mod's comments tab.

  • 6 months later...

i also experienced crashes after mods and i tried everything ( well except the right thing obviously) .

i had :

4gb patch to both the game .exe and the launcher .exe

and used various tips gleaned on various sites such as :

-reduced affinity to one core

-added -dx9

-installed mods through DAO manager , creating override packets, checking for compatibility issues

-reduced graphics to medium, then low .

-ticked off autosave

-ticked off buffer .

i tried IA, JB3 but removed them , thinking them to be a cause of probs.

the only mods i kept were "pretty faces" for the warden

and mods that alter gameplay ( enabling the console , skip the fade , extra slots , etc. )

game still froze after all these solutions . The only thing i didn't try was no mods at all whatsoever, haha.

well, now the game is uninstalled ( bought it from steam ) .

Pity for it's such a fun game.

The way to troubleshoot would be to confirm that the game does, in fact, run without mods, and then install mods until the crashing re-occurs.

Both JB3 and Improved Atmosphere have long histories of causing crashes.

The 'normal' method of patching the executable with 4GB/LAA does not work for the Steam version of the game, so your game may not have been patched, after all.

And yes, it is a fun game.

thanks for replying.

You're very right about troubleshooting the game through progressive mod adding, i will do that ..later.. i still feel burnt out from this last week's frustrations,

For Steam version, the patch is supposed to work if you also get the alternate DAOrigins.exe to replace the one in the bin-ship folder and then apply the patch.

Are you saying it still doesn't work in spite of that ?

Soon, i will reinstall the game without any mods. I did play it on this PC 2 years ago , without mods and it did work then.

..well, to be followed.

You did not state that you had applied the 4GB patch with the Steam-specific 'alternate' executable, just that you'd patched it. Many people are unaware that a Steam install has that extra requirement, so I though it worth mentioning. Sorry if that was confusing.

ah, ok. Yeah, sorry i didn't specify about the steam alternate.

so it is likely a mod that is conflicting.

I'm in the mood for some very modded Mass Effect right now. So, i will tinker with DAO later.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. :)
