[WIPz] Smuggler's Grotto - A Thiefy Cave Home

Hi, all! You might remember this post of mine from yesterday -

[What does YOUR stealth-oriented character need in a cave home?]

Hello, all! As of late I've been working on a small playerhome, codenamed Smuggler's Grotto. The inspiration came from the final room of Brinewater Grotto, where you meet and confront Gulum-Ei in his hideout. I always liked the stacked architecture there.

My mod is turning out to look a little different than the inspiration, but I like it all the same.

Anyway, I'm basically trying to gather ideas for features in a cave home for thieves or other stealthy characters. If all goes well I may be interested in making different underground homes for other character types.

The main area is well fleshed out. I want to keep this home small, one or two people only, so companions quarters are out for this home. So far I have plans for all the crafting stations and plenty of storage, including unique meshes such as open chests of ingots, gems, or misc loot.

Any ideas you have for the name of the mod, decorations, resources I could use, features, etc. is welcome. I want to make at least a few places for Skyrim, so any ideas are good.

I decided to make an official WIPz thread to gather ideas on the project in a more organized way.

Here's an imgur album with titles and captions for some screens to help you see how I'm doing. I'll put some highlights in a spoiler below. Any feedback is much appreciated... fire away!

Well, if you're open to suggestions, I'd say having a fair mix of static and takeable items. That way the house doesn't look sacked once everything's picked up, but doesn't look full until some work is put into decorating.

A fairly roomy cave would be nice. Not too big, but not too small. Also, an entrance location not put somewhere completely obvious (like next to Riverwood/Whiterun) because I feel a good thief would pick a location that's not easily visible.

Perhaps also a few places to display your ill-gotten gains?

I hope to put the entrance behind a waterfall in the Rift. If none exists that I like I may make one or hide it under a high road, much like the Falkreth DB sanctuary is hidden under a road. I agree, there are wayyy too many houses crammed between Riverwood and Whiterun...

As far as displays I am currently putting in scripted bookshelves (I will recommend the mod Unlimited Bookshelves to you now, which lets you put almost anything that'll fit in a shelf on it) and wooden weapon racks. I plan to keep these things minimal, though.

Have you taken a peek at the screens? I personally think the cave is Goldilocks-sized, just enough room for features and walking space, but it may seem too big or small to some.

Already got Unlimited Bookshelves. One of those lovely, useful mods that makes bookshelves practical and not awful.

As for the screenshots, I looked at 'em just after making the post. I think it's fairly properly sized. Big enough to not feel cramped, still having room for awesome stolen stuff. Small enough that it might be easily unnoticed by the outside world.

Ah, here's another display solution, weapon racks... on tables! Basically i'd link the proper activators together and voila, your bow will sit still on a table rather than a doesnt-belong-in-a-cave silk weapon rack. I should think this is possible anyway, I'll make sure to test and post screens.

That would be much nicer. Looks like I stole it, ran to my cave, and set it on a table, more like what a thief would do, rather than making a very expensive looking weapon rack. Of course, one or two weapon racks or plaques with some weapon already on it might not be too bad to have statically placed, either. After all, if you raid a warrior's home, would you steal just the sword, or the sword and the weapon plaque?
