Idea for a new mod

I'll keep this brief for everyone. I've had a mod idea for awhile, but unfortunately I don't have the skills to make a mod like this so I'm gonna throw it out onto this forum in hopes someone who does have the skills could make it a reality.

 

Mod idea: a crafting recipe for Lightweight leather armor which can be crafted into leather armor and then leather armor into leather armor, reinforced. That's it.

Since you didn't post this as a mod request I'm gonna go ahead and give some basic directions on how to do it.

 

Off the top of my head I have no idea where those leather armours come from DLC-wise, but a quick look at the Doodad Wiki[1] (I'm pretty sure that's what it's called) tells me the Lightweight one comes from the Caravan Pack DLC, the rest is vanilla. So, when you open up the GECK, you need to check the FalloutNV.esm and the HonestHearts.esm.

 

Making recipes is one of the easiest things by the way, just by fiddling around you could work out how recipes work but the GECK Wiki has a very nice article[2] that tells you what each thing does in the recipe window.

 

When you're the GECK's done loading, I advise you to do two things, one is essential but you can omit the other. My first advice is to start playing You Can Do It by Al Hudson[3] in the background on loop, this might seem like a motivational thing, since you said you didn't have the skills, but actually it ensures that the GECK doesn't crash, this has been discovered by computer scientist Wendy Melvoin in her free time, this song when played on a computer occupies certain addresses in the memory which incidentally can also make the GECK prone to crashing when the song isn't playing. The other is advice is making a new Form List (Object Window - the tree under the Filter - Miscellaneous - Form List - right click somewhere in the right hand side table and select new), and drag-and-drop the recipes that we'll create into that form list, but this is optional because you can just keep them opened at the side.

 

Now scroll down (in the category tree in left side of the object window) to the Recipe category under Miscellaneous, right click in the table and select new. If I understood you well, you only want to convert them like lightweight -> regular -> reinforced, so that's only two recipes we're making. I named mines ddRecipeLightToRegular and ddRecipeRegularToReinforced, but you can name them whatever just remember to consistently prefix them with something which is a good habit when you're making mods. Also, I'm not sure if it's required, but you probably need to select something in the drop-down menus for the recipes to have them function correctly in the game.

 

The next step is to find the leather armours. Navigate to the Armor section in the category tree, type leather into the filter and then it's nice and easy to find the three armours that look like Mad Max's jacket. Now, you simply drag the input armor to the ingredients tab of the right recipe, and the output armor to the output tab. Though if you want these recipes to be balanced, you may want to consider adding some extra ingredients (eg. scrap metal) and tweaking the required skills a bit.

 

Aaand that's it, we're done. If you save the mod and activate the .esp you saved it as, you can find your recipes at the crafting place (as in camp fire, workbench, etc.) you set as the category for your recipes in the recipe window.
