Console commands causing CTD?

I have a probelm I hope someone can help me with. I share the game with 2 siblings, and lately my brother is having constant, random CTDs on his character, however neither me nor my sister's savegames have this problem. The only difference between our gameplay and his is that he uses a lot of console commands(tcl, tgm, additem, kill/resurrect - sometimes several times per NPC, setscale, and sometimes placeatme), and my sister and I do not use these commands or rarely use a couple of them.

So my question is, is it possibel that his use of console commands could corrupt his savegame? If it was mods causing it, I would think the problem would be present on more than just his character. Is there a remedy? We don't want to delete his character.

Hello

Short answer: yes, console command can ruin your save game. You should avoid using them, and only touch them when your quest gets bugged and you cannot proceed in any other way... not just for the fun of it.

Since all information is stored in save games, and we cannot really have a clear look inside it's a bit hard to say if it can be saved. You could try using SKSE to remove running inactive scripts (but that takes time) and using other techniques (eg waiting 31 days in another cell outside Skyrim (like in qasmoke)) to see if his game fixes itself. Perhaps a program that goes through his save to remove (reset) clutter... like http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/31724/ but I have no idea if it can be saved... if the other option is to start a new game, then perhaps it's worth a shot. But there's no guarantee that his game will ever be stable again.

If you need more explanation about how or what then please be patient... it's late here (2:45 AM) and I was just off to bed :)...

http://www.darkcreations.org/forums/topic/3752-skse-cleans-invalid-scripts-from-old-mods/ requires SKSE installed

http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Troubleshooting#tab=Mods_and_Savegames for 31-day wait technique

Or the link above for a program to clear clutter from a save game

Perhaps the least hassle free is to start a new game... but I dunno his progress

He's level 40+, that's why we didn't want to restart. Thanks for the tips, we'll see if they help!

  • 4 years later...

I thought that disabling and then marking corpses to be deleted was safe in Fallout 4... but I've had multiple CTDs since I started doing it and I don't think its a coincidence.
According to this informative page (which actually comes from Bethesda) I was removing these corpses in the proper manner.
Obviously, this cannot be trusted.

That's the page detailing a command for Fallout 3.

Using MarkForDelete on objects you spawned with a PlaceAtMe would be fine but using it on something provided by the game or another mod could lead to crashes.

Unless you created it you shouldn't be destroying it. If you want to make the corpses go away simply use disable on them.
