Does anyone have any information on whether or not current mods will be usable, or modifiable to work, with the upcoming Legendary Edition of Mass Effect? In particular, the Mass Effect 3 mods SHOULD be usable or easily adapted to be usable with the new release if they don't change the file formats and encoding methods. As I understand it, BIoware supposedly contacted some modders about incorporating their mods into the new release, so there is some possible communication between some modders and the company. So any information or knowledge about changes to the game setup and current mods?

I don't expect any of them to work out of the box. I also have not heard anything about modders being contacted to help implement features, sounds like a rumor more than anything else. I know they contacted old BioWare employees to help with the first game, but I really doubt they asked modders. If you have a source for that info, I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

I don't have any reason to believe that existing mods will work with the Legendary edition. Bioware made a cryptic comment about wanting mods to work, and that they planned on contacting some mod authors. But I've seen comments from some of the major players in the mod community suggesting that existing mods probably won't work.

 

That's why I haven't preordered the game, and probably won't purchase it until / unless some essential things get ported over. MEHEM is mandatory for me, as is some sort of capability of editing weapons to achieve the balance that I think they should have. I also have to have the capability of editing barriers and shields so that they don't block powers; I have never accepted that ME2 / ME3 retcon, and won't. If I can get those three things, then I'll be happy to buy and play the Legendary edition. If not, then I still appreciate Bioware doing a remaster, but it won't be for me.

All existing content mods will have to be re-made from scratch, and the fan-made modding toolset will need to be heavily modified before modding is possible for the Legendary Edition. Unfortunately, there is no way to easily port mods from the Original Trilogy to the Legendary Edition. All content mods work by modifying basegame files, and because the LE will be running on an upgraded version of UE3, these basegame files will need to be re-modified from scratch. We won't know for sure exactly how the game's setup has changed until it comes out.

 

As for modders being contacted by Bioware, anyone contacted will be under an NDA and will not be able to disclose what has been discussed. It's very unlikely that any mods have been integrated into the game. The most likely outcome of these discussions, if anything, would be some systems like DLC loading and cut content being left in the game for modders to use. It's going to take a lot of time for the tools to be updated after LE releases, and even longer for mods to be re-made, but there is great hope for a successful modding community for the Legendary Edition.
