  1. "i assumed it would be as simple as exporting as obj, importing obj into Nifskope, saving as Nif file. but it doesn't seem to be." No it is not. if you import a model into Nifskope to modify for another game, it is not just a matter of importing. The best way is to import your model into an already made file from the game. If your game has ships, take one of these nif files, import your model and delete the old ship model.Beware, this work only for static models. If the model has some animations, you have to rig the model in max or blender first. As most nif files , you also MUST texture the model, it means your model must have textures or shaders, or nifskope will go wrong or your game will crash. Just look in a game file how a model handles the textures and apply the same to your model. It also means that you have to create texture files for your model. As I guess it is for the Gamebryo engine, .dds files, a diffuse, a normal, an environement map a cube map. Hope it helps I'm late on this one, maybe you already did figure all this by yourself.
