Yep. I decided to brute-force it because I was out of clever ideas. Fortunately Distinct Interiors was near the top of my load order, or I would still be at it. I agree that it's bizarre, but I can reliably reproduce the crash and haven't had a single one since removing DI. I've reported the bug, maybe the creators will have an idea.

Usually the game will crash the moment I press E. Sometimes I get a glimpse of the container menu before the crash happens (I haven't spotted any unusual items, or ones related to a particular mod). In one case (a dead Draugr) I could view the inventory, but the moment I moved the mouse or pressed an arrow key it would consistently crash. I've tried disabling every mod I can think of that adds items, Wrye Bash's bashed patch, and all interface mods, but the crashes persist. Most containers are fine, but the ones that do crash will always crash. However I've found that when going back to older saves for testing, the crashes when looting dead creatures would sometimes fix themselves. So I'd load a save right before a fight, kill the creature and loot it, and the game would consistently crash; but if I loaded a save from the start of the dungeon -- same cell, creatures already spawned, presumably -- it would be fine. Broken containers remain broken no matter what. So maybe I'm actually having two separate problems? :/ Affected containers have included: A random dead Skeever (the others in the same room were fine), a random dead Draugr (ditto), a burial urn, and a large sack. Here's my load order. I'd be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. Or maybe there's a known issue with some mod that I'm unaware of? Edit: It's gems. Any gem will crash the game if I try to view it. If I add a gemstone to my inventory using the console and then try to open the "misc" tab, I get a CTD. Does anyone know what could be causing this? On a new game with nothing enabled but Distinct Interiors and Alternate Start, gems will reliably crash the game.
