I was a little apprehensive about upgrading- 8.1 was not an improvement on Win 7... The only issue I had was that my Nvidia driver needed updating. Other than that, it runs fine. It even takes significantly longer before FNV inevitably crashes (Never happened with Dead Money, however...).

Did that. No joy. Is the old version of FOMM so big that you couldn't email it? I will be more than happy to E-mail you an older version I have backed up, When did he take down all the old versions, I have not checked yet, I am on 5 threads so I am boing, boing bounce, boing around. I don't know, except that the new one is from earlier this year. Despite the so-far disappointing results, I want to reassure you I appreciate your help. At least when I get around to re-installing W7, I'll know we tried everything.

Precisely. See my post above with the FOMM error screen. I went to the Nexus page for FOM download, read some comments indicating issues with FNV, but these were for an earlier version of FOMM. I messed with it, disabling UAC checks, set FNV to run on WXP SP3, and got that error above. Downloaded newest net framework: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=17851 ran FOMM fine after. Now I have successfully returned to square 1. I have become so accustomed to every effort failing that if I ever just get to the start menu, I might $hit myself.

Tried the following "fix" from http://filenetworks.blogspot.com/2010/10/fallout-new-vegas-fix-crash-freezing.html: Fallout 3 New Vegas freezing & random freezes mid game, BSOD errors Random freezes including BSOD errors can occur on certain multi core hardware environments due to incompatibilities with the game engine. You can try to avert these issues by limiting the game to use only two cores. Open fallout.ini file in My Documents\My Games\FalloutNV with a text editor such as Notepad. Look for the string bUseThreadedAI=0 Change it to bUseThreadedAI=1 Add another line beneath the above, iNumHWThreads=2 Save and close this file. Repeat steps 2-5 for fallout_default.ini file in installation dir (default C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout New Vegas) >>>Status: FAIL :wallbash:

Okay. I DLed secure rom removal tool. So- I run that Reset my screen res to 1024x768 reinstall Is that right? I have been using this monitor for about a year. It's a little bigger than my old one (1680x1024) which was a 21". This is a 22". I certainly don't want to run FNV at a lower res. I have edited *ini files before in other games that didn't support widescreen. I'm surprised that FNV doesn't. I'll report back, as usual.

Okay, I am an old SAC crewdog. I need a checklist. Go through the last post and turn it into a step-by-step that I can follow to do what you suggest. I'm not sure about some of what you are saying. :ermm: Hold my hand through it. Be gentle. I may be a geek  , but you are a Jedi. :ninja: I am your Padewan, Obi Wan James....

I have never downloaded anything to my Xbox but Microsoft updates and NCAA rosters. Somehow, my Steam may have gotten messed up through a Steam client update or something. I have had both my Xbox and PC connected to the net for 2+ years. This only began happening last Fall, with random CTDs in FNV, and finally the problem we have been talking about. During that time, I was also playing coop L4D2, without incident. I can't nail down anything that happened around the time I began experiencing the consistent pre-start menu CTDs, except for either an automatic Steam update or an automatic Windows update. :wallbash: I think it is important to emphasize that I have not engaged in any Steam-y behavior on my Xbox, so if that is, in the final analysis, the issue, it will indeed be rare. If Steam tech is able to rectify this, I will post a summary of what we have done in a new post. I know that it may be of value to others, and besides, I am inspired by your generosity of time and genuine enthusiasm for improving our timewasting...errrr...gameplaying lives. I have renewed respect for Valve, and look forward to supporting you by buying the next HL installment. 8) If I could send you a beer over the 'net, I'd send you a case!

I hope this doesn't matter, but I opened my Steam account with Half-Life and have never used my console in connection with any steam game. I've only ever played Madden and NCAA football on it. I don't know how the mix up occurred. I have the DVD version of FNV, but did download it once as a test for the problem. I hope this does it. I appreciate your help, and I hope I can finally close my ticket with you. At least now I know where to turn if I have issues in the future. Thanks!

Here's the report I sent to Steam: For several months, I have been unable to get to the start menu for Fallout New Vegas. The game crashes after 2 or 3 slides, and an non-descript error message that "FNV has stopped working and needs to close" pops up. I have been working with the help of a member of the Bethesda forums community to rectify this (he is also working for Valve, so really knows his stuff), and he believes that the issue may be with Steam updating my PC as though it were an Xbox or PS3. I own an Xbox, but have never had any related contact whatsoever with Steam through that platform. The reason he believes this is the issue is because I have sent him screenshots of my Steam and FNV install directories, and several files are missing. He says the contents seem to mirror console data rather than PC data, and this is causing the game not to run correctly. Here is a link to the detailed discussion: http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/394441-ctd-on-startup-problem-53742/ I cannot determine if my Steam account is tied in with my console. If it is, I do not want it to be in any way. I do not play Steam client games on that machine, and I'd just as soon not even have Steam aware that I own one, if it will interfere with my FNV. I am attaching my system specs, and screenshots of my Steam and Fallout New Vegas install directories. I am very keen to get this resolved, so let me know if there is any additional info you require to proceed. Thank you. Attached: System Info Directory screens Thanks, cc. I hope this clears it up. I'm gettin' the Fallout withdrawal shakes. Hopefully Steam is more responsive than other companies, like ea (bastards).

Okay, I have deep cleaned my registry and OS several times. I opted to buy Advanced System Care, and after cleaning my app list, defragging, etc., my reg comes up clean after the deepest level of cleaning possible with this cnet 5-star app. I reinstalled FNV, and the files you listed are still missing. I have just reinstalled Steam (after reg scrub and reboot), and here is my Steam install directory. Some of the files you named are here. Next, I will reinstall FNV, after disabling my firewall and AV. Stand by.
