The Gamebryo engine is destroyed with huge populations of folks, but that doesn't stop epic battles. Fallouts 3 and New Vegas both did this infinitely well in the final missions, making it feel like the biggest battle ever with only 4-5 spawned enemies at any given time. You just have to be *good*.
