pavy: That can't be 100% true because theres no true character classes and you just created one pOrn wannabe. Sorry but that one made me chuckle a lot. ;)
I think its fair to say that everyones comments are all as valid here and the issue is not so much that Skyrim is a bad game. Far from it I for one love the new art direction of the game, the desaturated colours etc, the more unique dungeons far better than Oblivion in regards to that, but thats just my preference.
The point I'm really trying to make is a lot of people enjoy the game for the sandbox option of an openended experience and are less concerned with rules and mechanics. Then there are the people myself included who would like to see classes, a more involved character generation process, more options to roleplay in both the context of alignment and dialogue.
The truth of all this is we all take something different from the game and perhaps some are more easily immersed in the latest TES game than others.
However we have to remember Bethesda made the game purposely generic so it would have a broad appeal and it does. For those of us who want more options, well lets be fair and say we'll get that with excellent community made mods, something as PC owners we can enjoy, the same can not be neccessarily said for all console users.

Just wanted to add that performance in Windhelm has dropped quite a bit on my PC which is fairly decent, its somewhat sluggish in that city since I put in the new texture pack. Yet I never had a problem with Whiterun or any other large scale replacers.

Usually when ini tweaks go seriously wrong the solution is typically to delete the ini then open starting the launcher for the program again it should auto detect optimised settings and restore a default ini.
Even if that fails the worse that could happen is you have to reinstall again, a pain I know if you have the Steam download version and not the boxed disk version.

Ghogiel is definately right the alpha channel is terrible it looks like white noise, kind of the look you get when your TV goes off at 3.00 in the morning, well before digital that is. :)
That example is really bad and to be quite honest its clear that if Ghogiel has investigated this which its apparent he has then its a problem. And no Ghogiel I didn't think you were being anal at all, I was just suprised how to the point you were, but you were very right too.
In regard to Whiterun I did mean the Chris2012 stuff is the Whiterun stuff in this mod different? I haven't been to Whiterun since I tried the pack.
Awesome Fallout 3 textures Ghogiel. Makes me want to install the game again.
Incidentally I tried dirkduggler's textures and I thought they were very good. Of course thats only my own preference:
-
Ghogiel: Wow you really don't pull punches do you? I promise I won't enlarge stuff and sharpen ever! ;)
Seriously though compressing a texture and compressing again is total insanity and really hurts the mod with that kind of shoddy workflow. To be honest you don't see Chris2012 pulling that kind of stunt with Whiterun do you?
Although I do appreciate the amount of work involved I counted 125 textures for Solitude alone. You really need someone who is keen enough and skilled enough to do the majority of city textures, so the quality is retained. Which means the complete fool, I mean very dedicated person would have to be totally committed. :P
I'm not sure what the Riften texture set is like I've downloaded it but not checked it out in game yet. Anyone know if that is of any use?

Thanks but actually I meant in regard to the Mage/Monk set not the Necromancer and Black mage robes I initially did.
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1548
The only difference in this set is red trim on the black robes and the necromancer oblivion logo instead of the green skull. Everything else sticks to vanilla. Blue robes are more blue because the description in game is that they are blue and Bethesda made them grey which is a little silly. If the pack interests you it would be very little work to give the necro robes a green skull and remove the black robes red trim.
Obviously I want to finish the pack off completely first before including it in another mod. I am also redoing all the DB armour at high res and the vast majority of the vanilla clothing which will stick to the vanilla style, the Yosolda texture will become part of that set. Its a lot of work but thankfully necKros has offered to help me with the workload.
I'll PM when things are further along. Thanks getting back to me. :)

Actually playing a fighter is a fun experience now I approaching level 37. I would say Skyrim hand to hand combat is really fun. I never get tired of shield bashing and decapitating finishing moves. My issue I think is simply that I followed too many main questlines and due to them being less than deep experiences it kind of spoilt things.
I'm going to try starting a new game and stick to purely one type of role, no major questlines, just exploring and doing secondary quests. I have long since turned off compass markers. I'm going to not fast travel ever, play the game on Master instead of Adept and I'll see if I have a better experience as people have suggested.

I am aware that there are a couple of textures that really don't look particularly good -- not necessarily because they break the art direction, but because they've lost definition instead of gained it. These will be removed in the next release until we can find better replacements. But things won't be perfect with the first few releases, and this is still a sort of pre-release. If you, or anyone else sees textures in this pack they don't think are up to par, please let us know so we can work on fixing them.
Well to offer useful feedback the only things that just didn't work as well as they should were:
1. The rocks. really well textured but due to the horrible way Bethesda have mapped the UV's I noticed a lot of texture stretching in areas. Due to the texture being so good this problem was really noticeable to me. Looks fantastic on distant cliffs etc. I don't blame the author at all, because the work is great.
2. Windhelm. I noticed on the city walls that the detail level seems to pop too fast. Hopefully you know what I mean, maybe its the mip maps, maybe its the way the game handles it but it was very noticeable. A lot of the Windhelm textures are really nice but some are still awful. Mainly where walls and pavement have snow on them, the alpha channel that I assume controls the snow blend transition looks very blocky.
3. Loved everything else.
Not sure if you'd be interested but when its totally complete if you'd like to include my Monk and Mage robes pack, PM me and let me know. Not sure if you actually want clothes or not doing or you're just sticking to environmental textures. I would have volunteered to contribute to the mod when I read the original post however the thing is I'm not so good with groups. I like to do things mainly by myself in fear of not completing work and letting people down. Plus I don't like the stress I get when people ask when stuff is going to be finished, just my experience in the past.

necKros: Ok many thanks. :)

Need help? I'm looking for something to retex while I get the source materials for my new character textures... We could split out work, I don't care working on the less important outfits :)
necKros : Many thanks for the offer it would certainly make the project go faster. If you really don't mind helping this is the list of things I have done and am also planning to do from the unpacked texture folders:
farmclothes 1-4 and variants
children clothes
barkeep
blacksmith
grey beard robe is going in my mage/monk pack.
ignore all mage and priest stuff because most of that is in my mage/monk pack or is going to be in it.
jester is getting done for Dark Brotherhood.
barkeeper clothes
tavern wench clothes
If you want to do anything else in the clothing folder feel free. Maybe fineclothes 01 and 02 would be a good place to start. Yarl clothes also. Just leave me the female Yarl clothes that Yarl Elfsif of Solitude wears I'd really like to do that one. Whatever you have the time to do would be greatly appreciated. Currently all full clothing is going to be 2048x2048, footwear and gloves 1024x1024. However where outfits are split into diffent textures for example pants, tunic etc I think I'm going to do them 1024x1024. Its not sensible to do all that at 2048x2048 and would be an uneccessary performance drain for some users.
I know it goes without saying but I will give you full credit in the readme and mod description for whatever you do. On a side note I downloaded your Beauty Faces mod, really nice work. Will be endorsing that one.

All my characters feel like a jack of trades and I don't feel I ever really emphasise with my character. but the problem is my Mage can quite easily start to get good with a sword, or be proficient at wearing armor.
What are you a Troll? Read what you typed here, lol
TES series has always been a jack of a all trades game. If you don't want it to be that way and want to play a pure mage, start off by not wearing armor or yielding a sword, hard concept huh?
I realize Skyrim is not for everyone but some of the arguments and examples given are grade school material
My point was in Morrowind and Oblivion it was far harder to switch from your current character class into those kind of new skills and professions. I would personally prefer more restrictions. That is my opinion I don't have a problem with it if you don't feel the same.
However I certainly don't appreciate being called a troll simply because you either don't like the discussion or feel it is infantile and beneath you in some way quite a few people have expressed similar views to mine but I do consider everything people have said and many of the reasons I don't neccessarily share have been equally valid and thought provoking.
I'd appreciate it if you don't like something to simply state that you don't agree and why because that would have been a far more sensible and tactful response to the one you adopted. Hard concept huh?

^ This. Please start with the clothing we're seeing all the time. Afterwards you can still retexture the chef outfit if you feel like.
Good to know. Point I was making is I have no intention of doing Beggar and Chef clothes if I can avoid it.

cooltrickle. Ok that explains that. For a minute you had me worried I thought I'd uploaded the PSD or something. If you have 4GB then as long as you've got some form of 4GB enabler and a 64bit OS then you should have no problem with high res textures.
In regards to your monitor yeah thats a problem so I take your point. I was going for true high res though not medium res as I'm sure you can appreciate. You could always reduce the texture in GIMP provided you have the DDS plugins and have experience of this sort of thing.
Of course if its really an issue for you I'll do it for you upload to mediafire and PM you a link if want. May not look so hot though I hate reducing or enlarging anything, it lets Photoshop have too much control and messes it up, but it may be OK. Let me know if this is what you want.

Karasuman: Maybe speed is a factor. Argonians where always my favourite race to play, but its also the fact they had water breathing as a perk. In Skyrim no matter other race you play they all seem to be capable of remaining underwater for rather too long. In fact NPC's don't even seem to exhibit the ability to drown.
One quest I did was in a Smugglers cave and the main boss fell in the water and wouldn't die. I kept trying to shoot him with arrows but since I could only hit him when part of his body was above water he took about 35 minutes to kill. In Oblivion at least I could fight underwater. This kind of thing in Skyrim just broke the immersion for me and made me more detached from the game world and my characters role in it.
In regard to the comments others have left.
Miraboreasu: I've tried the rogue path and sneaking just seems broken to me as is the bounty system for stupid things like killing chickens. To be quite honest I got so irritated with the poor AI on missions that many a time it was easier to simply slaughter enemies than even attempt to sneak around.
Blocky: I know its a sandbox but there were restrictions in Oblivion and Morrowind. Its far to easy to dabble with other stuff in Skyrim. Plus I miss creating my own spells as a mage. This new mage is particularyl dull, at least they could have allowed multiple conjurations.
The problem with the game for me is most of the major questlines don't have any satisfactory outcome and for me thats a major immersion breaker. Completing the Dark Brotherhood questline, I'm Listener so people should be terrified at the mere mention of my name, but lets face it, it has no effect on how people view you. Even being the Dragonborn is a rather flat ending.

Such a large project is going to be quite a dull job so I have to break this monotony up by doing other things inbetween so as not to go completely insane.
If you get tired, you can always make a tutorial. Many hands make light work.
I downloaded the villager04 dress which is 2048x2048 at 46 MB (main surface). The vanilla version is 512*512 at 2.5 MB. I think some of us are never going to get the full benefit of a resolution of 2048*2048. Is there any chance of you making an intermediate resolution of 1024*1024? The vanilla clothes are horrendously low-res, so I'm glad someone is fixing that, but I think ~50 MB for a single dress is a little high.
Ok I'm seriously confused where do you get 50MB from?
The diffuse/colour map for the dress is 2.7MB the Normal map is obviously higher at 5.5MB. The file size for the whole mod is only 6.29MB and thats been compressed in winrar. Texture size is 2048x2048 for the dress and normal map.The boots are 1024x1024. So its quite reasonable for a full set of character clothing. Of couse if people want a mid res version for performance reasons I can maybe do one later when I complete the clothing pack I'm working on of course a lot of people would have to ask for it.
50MB though you're still confusing me with that. Since I've just tested it by checking Nexus download service and I assure you its 6.2MB. At that filesize I could do 30 outfits and you'd only be looking at 188MB.
-
nandchan: Thanks I was just kidding as I'm sure you know. However I' m not sure if this falls within my full capabilities either. ;D
I would like to know from people what clothing should be priority to get done first. Do people want Miner, chef and beggar clothes as well or is that something you can all overlook providing most NPC clothing is improved?
No armour suggestions please. I know I said I was doing DB armour but thats just a side project to keep me sane.

"Pretty" is subjective. Many of these texture mods make the game look worse to me because they go against the art direction, or they are just downright uglier in my opinion.
I guess my point is I'd prefer to pick and choose to get the rare really good ones.
Well people are obviously entitled to choose their own mods, but I'm curious as to how you feel they deviate from the art direction. I thought the choices were very similar and stuck very closely to the vanilla style.
Having read the teams original concept post sticking to the original style was something they clearly wanted for their texture package. So I don't quite follow.
-
You have my full support. Can't wait for the first few releases!
Thanks nandchan. I may call on that support you so kindly offered when I get to the clothing I totally despise. You don't mind doing 10-20 textures do you? No of course you won't mind.

Can anyone tell me if this mod hurts performance?
Seemed okay to me. Only thing I noticed was slightly longer loading times nothing annoying though, but I've got an old hard drive and lots and lots of textures in my data folder
-
I thought this was a really great pack. In quite a few cases I already had some of the mods contained but bundling them together was a good idea. To be honest there were a couple of things I wasn't that keen on but I think that was due to my own personal preference and not a reflection on the authors themselves.
The improved flora is especially beautiful, definately missed that one, so finding it here was a bonus.

Hi everyone.
I've been persuaded by a lot of people who have commented on my released mods to embark on an extensive clothing retexture mod. I have started work on it and will try to do as many outfits as I can. I may not do all of them since I think some outfits are totally unessential Beggars, chefs etc.
However I will try to at least do all the villager, merchants, blacksmiths etc who are in need of nicer quality fashions. I intend to stick to the vanilla style and all textures are handpainted from scratch.
Such a large project is going to be quite a dull job so I have to break this monotony up by doing other things inbetween so as not to go completely insane.
I am continuing to support my Monk and Mage Robes mod and I am also working on the Dark Brotherhood armours, robes etc where I will also be sticking to the vanilla style even though I don't really care for the Daredevil look.
If the vanilla DB look is not your thing I am planning a complete Dark Brotherhood revision which will occur when the CK is released.
Just thought I'd share a few pictures with you. Hopefully the people who have supported my mods approve.
Female Merchant Outfit
Villager Outfit.
Dark Brotherhood Female Armour, gauntlets and cowl still to finish.
If the images appear as links its due to the fact that I had to put them on my DeviantArt Profile because Imageshack is behaving like a lemon today.

Well the latest patch sucked. I think Steam may have withdrawn it but don't quote me on that. Thankfully due to Windows 7 I could revert back to the original exe. So everythings ok, just slightly buggy.
I would stay with the version you have until Beth get their act together. Regarding the 4GB fix it makes a real difference, apparently 2048x2048 textures causes issues with standard 2GB enabled Skyrim. I used the CFF explorer to modify the original exe following the guidlines from a user on Nexus I haven't had any crashes.
I'm sure the fix is in the top 100. If you can't find it just type 4GB in the filesearch.

TIp: Never increase the size of a texture. It does not look good unless you spend the next week fixing it.
Instead: Re-create it. No, a tone texture is not hard to find. Neither is a wood one. You got a reference, and you got the normal map. Get a cavity map out, and bazinga: You don't have to re-texture everything.
Being lazy have never been an excuse for anything!
I agree with this 100%.
Though, knowing which sources have base files you can modify and redistribute can be tricky at times, and also following all the rules of redistribution if it's under a specific license can be difficult to understand at first. Still, there's usually documentation about the licenses, and it doesn't take long to understand their various rules.
I agree with both of these comments. I try not to fall into lazy habits but in some cases some of the original texture can be used for overlay/multiply/hue purposes, the trick is to use it at a very low opacity although most of the time it really isn't worth the extra effort of cleaning up the enlarged original with its compression artifacts etc. Far better to start again from scratch really.

Well I hired Uthgerd and adventured with her for a long time. My character was a fighter and I figured another fighter would be total overkill. I was right but it was fun. Sometimes she'd hang back and use a bow, other times she'd get straight into smashing enemies faces in with a two handed axe.
Great girl, bit ugly mind you, but tough as nails. Married her in the end, reasons a combination of her being a really tough woman and the fact that I love the sound of Claudia Christian's voice. Babylon 5 fan you see.
It all ended very badly she got struck by lighting in a storm at least thats what it looked like and that was the end of her. Maybe it was a spell or something from an enemy, no idea. My character misses her she was great.

Have you had chance to check all the WH textures, I'm wondering if they're all saved in the correct format too, because if I remember with F3 performance got hit when things where saved incorrectly, made a few mistakes when I first started out myself. lol
