  1. I think that I would find it equally immersion breaking if everyone everywhere I went recognized me and recalled something I did. But then again, being a thane in a city where I have helped a significant portion of the populace and even performed some major tasks for the city itself one would think I would be a little bit more recognized for it.

I see lots of things I would like to see more of when I play, but I try to keep things in perspective. Could the devs have put more time into developing these things further? Sure, but not without giving up on developing something else. Maybe they did too many small things for the sake of quantity and not enough big things for the sake of quality. But I find that the quality of what has been put into the game is still pretty damn good, and just because I don't have npc's saying "hail to the Arch Mage" everywhere I go doesn't mean the game sucks as a result.

  2. It'l just be another place to download mods. So long as the TOS for the workshop is changed from the way it is currently I'd be happy to use it. I seriously doubt that Valve will support the modding community in the way that the Nexus does. Here we have a host of moderators who keep the boards clean from trolls and the like and also who are very knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to modding in general. There will be nothing like that there, and it will mean that this place remains superior.
  3. I'd like to get some more balanced opinions on Skyrim. It's been widely raved about by critics, and while nobody listens to them anymore, it's got the highest aggregate score I've ever seen on STEAM. I personaly really love it, I find it addictive the way I found FNV, immersive like I found Oblivion, and OMGHUGE like EVE. TBH I really love it, it's probably the best all-round game I've played in many a year, and I look forward to the dawn of the age of Skyrim mods, because frankly, I think that's gonna rock.

However, I've seen an overpoweringly negative reaction on the Nexus-the vast majority of posts I've seen on the Skyrim forum in review of Skyrim are complaints, or rants, or nonsensical gibbering about how people can't understand why the game's so easy with TGM turned on. Do you guys... actualy hate Skyrim or is it just a very vocal minority? I really am curious.

I think most people who like the game aren't on these forums saying how much they like the game. So you end up seeing all the people with complaints.

  4. My worry here with getting money involved has to do with modders becoming more protective of their work. Right now a huge number of mods aren't created by the author alone and are only possible due to someone elses work. Look at just about any mod out there and you will notice that most of them use some sort of resource from another modder. This could be anything from actual modders resources like new meshes and textures or scripts to programs like obse and wrye bash.

If money starts getting involved then a lot of the cooperation that exists now could stop. People might become too worried about others using their work just for profit, and will be much more protective over who gets to use it. What that means is the number and quality of the mods we see now for games like Oblivion and Fallout could be significantly reduced for Skyrim just because modders can get payed.

I really like the idea of modders being able to profit from their hard work, but I am not too blind to see the consequences that could result if it were to happen.

  5. http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/workshoplegalagreement

That address above is the SteamWorks TOS

Read section 3 for payment information but also bear in mind that aforementioned in the above text they state that once you submit the work you lose the ability to withdraw said work. With Nexus you can set a file to hidden or delete it for any reason and I've had a friend who made popular mods exercise that right.

I will be happy to use steam workshop if it works similarly to the way other fan made mod sites do. But if the TOS is even remotely similar to what it is now I will avoid it like the plague.

  6. I think it is probably appropriate for Skyrim vampires to be this way for the most part. I could be wrong as I'm going from memmory, but I believe that the more "civilized" vampires are fewer in number and are mostly in Cyrodiil. That would include vampires such as the count of Skingrad and a few others. It would seem, as it was the case in Oblivion, that vampires in the Elderscrolls come in two varieties. Those who can control their impulses and can live among other people without being noticed too much, and then there are all the others which are very bestial in nature.

I duno, perhaps a few of the more refined types would be nice to have to balance things out, but I see nothing wrong with having the cannibalistic variety.

  7. This Steamworks crap is just the next step in making pc gaming indistinguishable from console gaming. All the freedom that pc gamers have had over the years, compared to console gamers, is slowly being eroded. They want total control for the simple reason that it allows them to make more money. Nothing evil about it, its just plain old capitalism, whatever the market will bear, and there seems to be no limit to what the market will put up with.

Good grief, you chicken littles are getting on my nerves. There has been no direct claim of steam charging for player-made mods that I've seen, and in fact, quite the contrary.

Steam Workshop – We’re excited to share news that we’ve been working closely with Valve to integrate Steam Workshop into the Creation Kit. Using the Workshop, you’ll have free user content with the push of a button. The Creation Kit will bundle your mod and upload it to the Workshop, where everyone can browse, rate, and flag mods for download. You’ll be able to do this from any web device, including your smartphone. Like a live Netflix queue, when you fire up Skyrim, mods you flagged will be automatically downloaded and installed. Everyone here is really excited about the opportunities and possibilities this opens up for our entire community.

Prefer to use existing modding sites? Not a problem. You’ll still be able to upload/share/access Skyrim mods on fan-created mod sites.

Steam workshop will be a change for the way that you can get new mods. It will, at least seemingly, NOT charge you for any of them. Even IF they start charging for mods, big whoop. Skyrim Nexus will always be here for free user content, and as long as there are people who want free content, as mods have ALWAYS been, there will ALWAYS be suppliers.

True, there is no direct claim that steam workshop will be charging a fee for any uploaded mods for Skyrim. However, the TOS as it is now says that they can do so at their own discretion. Also, Bethesda reps have been asked to clarify and have given their typically vague responses to the questions. (there is a news article on tes-nexus about this)

Further, the problem isn't whether they will charge for all mods, it's whether they will charge for ANY of them. What's to stop someone from taking your work here and uploading it there and making a little bit of money off it? Even if users can come here and get free content, would you be ok with someone profiting off of your work without your permission?

Maybe there isn't anything to be worried about. But the information provided thus far has done nothing to quell any fears about what could be in store for us.

  8. I'm afraid that we'll start seeing price tags on high quality mods. I guess the days of our free mods/DLC are over. I hope that we'll still have high quality stuff on nexus at least. Sigh.. I hate the greed of this world.

How dare modders try to earn a small return for spending hours upon hours creating content for nothing other than a pat on the back and several complaints.

    Those bastards.

If you think about it it really won't be that great of a thing. Look at any of the most popular mods out there and look at the list of contributors. Very few great mods are created solely by that author. They use all kinds of stuff from other people, be it other mods or various other resources that make their mod possible. (like the script extenders and wrye bash) If this happens it is likely that mod creators will become much more protective of their work and less likely to allow others to use it. What that means is you are going to see a lot fewer mods being created, and a lot of mods that are created are going to be of less quality than the ones you see now.

Further, you should read my post above. If the terms of service remain as they are with valve in charge, the creators of popular mods aren't going to be making much of anything off the mods they create because valve is just going to create a copy of your mod and sell their version.

It just looks bad to me the whole way round.

  9. I doubt steam workshop will end up being that popular. All that one click/easy to install nonsense is just asking for trouble. All I see in the future are people installing tons of different mods without any clue as to what they really do, running into all sorts of problems with conflicts and the like, and running back to the creators yelling about how their mod sucks cause it broke their game.

On the flip sid, you should see steam workshops' TOS as it is right now. Maybe it'll change, but there is a particularly scary part here

    http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/workshoplegalagreement

Valve may choose to distribute Your Contribution for free and/or for a fee. If Valve chooses to distribute Your Contribution for a fee, then Valve may set the price for such distribution in its sole discretion, and Valve will pay You as follows, conditioned on Your compliance with the obligations contained in this Agreement.

Beginning with the calendar month in which Valve first distributes a copy of the Contribution for a fee, Valve shall pay to You twenty-five percent (25%) of the Adjusted Gross Revenue (defined below) actually received by Valve from Valve’s distribution of the copy of the Contribution during the calendar month. To the extent that the payment calculation results in a negative amount, that negative amount will be carried forward and deducted from any future amounts otherwise payable by Valve hereunder. Valve will remit payment in accordance with Valve procedures, currently net 30 paid in full. Please note that Valve may change procedures in the future, for example requiring a minimum amount to accumulate before making a payment. You also acknowledge and agree that other users, and Valve itself, may create other works that are similar to Your Contribution(s), and that Valve’s payment obligations under this Section 3 only apply with respect to the distribution of actual copies of Your Contribution(s).

Apparently Matt Grandstaff, the Bethesda community manager, wasn't very clear on whether this would change or not when asked whether there could be fees applied to some mods. He said

Our focus with the Steam Workshop is creating an environment where users can create, upload, download, and rate free user content.

This is a very vague response. It's clearly a yes about the free portion, but is by no means a no to the fee portion. Whatever the benefits may be to this sort of thing, I foresee a mountain of headaches for the community if it happens.

  10. To be honest Im not certain what you are talking about. Do containers have too much loot? Is there too much loot in general? What does memory have to do with loot? Can you be more clear?

It's basically when you leave too much stuff laying on the ground. And the game will create a sack to put it in so the Memory on the game won't overload. It happened when it made the game unstable, but some glitches could be found just laying one thing down would cause it.

I never noticed actual sacks in either oblivion or morrowind, but I did notice that if you droped like 20 "leather boots" they were dropped into a single boot on the ground. But yes, if you drop a whole bunch of a single item it will be stacked into a single physical item. I don't know anything about "sacks" though.

  11. Despite the problems Skyrim is still the best-looking Elder Scrolls game to date.

My only real complaint is that the game doesn't have stuff in it that were supposed to be in there... Like the non-existant radiant AI. Man, they really hyped up the fact that quests were to be tailored for the character playing, and that questgivers werten't to be fixed, but that never happened.

Personally I wish I would have bought it for PC instead of console.

So you haven't gotten any random quest from couriers, inn keepers, or the like? Even some companion's guild members send you to random places for some of their quests...

  12. Skyrim has a terrible UI.

Some people thinks so, but not everyone. What exactly is bad about it?

    Skyrim has extremely short qeustlines.
Yet skyrim has a lot of quests. How many quests does it have compared to Oblivion and Morrowind?

    Skyrim no longer has attributes.

Who cares? That doesn't make it worse for everyone, certainly not objectively worse. I think it's better off without them.

Skyrim has a lack of spells and has no spell crafting.

True, there are fewer spells. But then again all the core spells are there. Plus they spent time on producing a new spell system and some of that time went into shouts as well. I think that the spell system as a whole is much better, though I hope to see some additions to spells via mods. Good riddance to spell crafting. It didn't make the spell system better it made it infinitely worse.

Skyrim still has shitty combat AI.

No worse than any of the other Elder scrolls games.

Misc quests are repetitive and pointless.

More repetitive than the side quests in Oblivion and Morrowind? Yeah right.

    I can keep going.

Please do, cause I have yet to see a person who has claimed that Skyrim is worse than other elderscrolls be able to back it up. Nothing you have stated here accomplishes that goal either.

  13. So I don't have access to the internet on the computer I play on anymore, but I can patch on my laptop and transfer the files over. Problem is I don't know what files I really need to move. I could transfer everything, but I'm betting that would take a while to do. Anyone have any ideas?
  14. One thing I am looking forward to once the CK is out is to diversify the dragons. If someone else doesn't get around to it first I want to have different textured dragons in different areas with different abilities. I'd like to see dragons using more than just frost and fire breath. I'd like to see some using a few other kinds of shouts to make things more interesting.

If you are melee I can see a dragon using Fus-ro-dah against you, then dis-arming you (or the other way around), then coming at you to chomp you to bits. Some may even use shouts that charm or infuriate nearby targets. Imagine if, while using the town guards to help you out, the dragon uses a shout that causes them all to attack the closest target. Your allies suddenly turn on each other and you.

I have so many ideas for new dragon abilities, I can't wait!

  15. I see enough dragons already, but I'd love to see more diversity among them. I've already seen some really great mods that retexture them. Would love to see a few of those applied to brand new versions of dragons with their own special attacks...not just fire and frost breath....
  16. slightly off topic, though somewhat related to the OP: can I do the reverse of this in order to apply the patch?

I no longer have access to the net on the comp I play on, but I can download the patch on my lap top. So if I want to apply the patch, just copy over the folder and it will work? Is there a better way I could do it?

  17. I think the level of immersion in Skyrim is much greater than in Oblivion...but I hate having to pause everytime I enter my favorites! I want enough hotkeys that I can hotkey EVERYTHING if I wanted to.
