  1. The exception for creatures that have reflect damage, like clanfers, your best bet is actually using a low physical damage weapon with a fairly strong enchantment; low level chillrend works fairly well for this.

I guess thats another example of something that holds me back in making better decisions for combat. I had no idea that clanfears had reflect damage. I have some idea about the advantages / disadvantages of some things, like vampires being weak towards fire and Dark Elves being strong against it.

I know just from reading around here that certain undead are weak towards lightning. But I guess there are plenty of other things with strengths and weaknesses that I just have no clue about yet.

  2. Generally, the answer to that depends on how quickly it will reach you, how well you can defend attacks, what poisons you have available, what spells you can use. Ideally, if the first hit isn't enough to severely wound an opponent, it should atleast make close combat easier or allow for a second shot.

For equipment, it's not all about hp to AC, there are other factors, like agility, movement speed, which can play a rather significant role in being able to recover from being hit, or avoid the attack entirely. Equipment which boosts base stats or key skills can often be better than just defense or hp bonuses. Often you just have to resist the urge to crunch the numbers and just play with what feels right, taking things as they come, calmly dealing with anything that results from a mistake.

Its usually the resisting the urge that I am left to, since I have no clue how to appropriately value many things. Im always left wondering, for instance, should I keep this shield for the ac/better defense or take the two handed sword I just found for a boost to damage? I usually take the shield, because that just FEELS right. But I know thats irrational.

Since I have my game set so that it takes a very long time to level up, I usually get a good feel for the abilities of certain enemies. If at level 10 I take on a raider, I ususaly try to damage his strength first so that he cant kill me in a few hits. I do this because I know that I cant do enough damage to him to keep up with what he will do to me. But if I take down his strength a raider becomes much more manageable.

It's usually by trial and error that I discover battle tactics/strategies.

But I still have no clue about the armor. Should I take the BP that add a few hp or should I take the BP that has a few more Ac? The shield or the Two hander?

If the numbers are way out of proportion, the decision is usually easy. But if they are close, I have no clue still

  3. Im currently taking a break from studying for my symbolic logic exam that I have tommorow. Im finding that I am grasping all the concepts, (and remembering them!), with ease. In fact, this whole course has been quite easy despite the bad reputation it has for being very difficult. Is it because Ive been doing all my homework and studying everyday? lol, who really does that?

Nope, its because of Oblivion! Granted, the logic used in scripting is much simpler than the things I have to do, but the fact that I am so limited in the tools available for scripting means that I have to come up with pretty complex scripts compared to what I could otherwise do if those other symbols/tools were available to me.

Modding Oblivion has atleast put me in the frame of mind that was necessary take all this stuff in, and I may be doing better in a difficult course because of it.

How often have any of you actually been able to glean some real knowledge from a game?

  4. Im new to modding myself, curently working on my second mod. I know there are some guides to texturing and such, I havent looked at those too closely, I have had little need of such things so far so I cant give any advice there. As far as the rest goes I would suggest delving into actual quests when you are trying to figure out how to do something you dont yet know how to do. Your mention of recruitable ncp's towards the end sounds alot like what can be found towards the end of the "Knights of the Nine" mod. You might look at the scripts there and see how they accomplished what they did, and borrow some of those ideas.

In general thats the best way to figure out how to do something that you want to do. Find something thats similar thats already been done, and see what you can learn from it.

  5. Somewhere you did not install a mesh file correctly, Id imagine that if you are missing it for a chest you will find that you are missing them for other things as well. Id suggest that you just reinstall the meshes/textures of the files that you downloaded in the order that you installed them and be sure that you follow all directions for their installation.

as far as map markers go, OOO removes map markers for the towns and cities. They shouldnt be there. Once you travel to those places you will see them.

  6. Ive had this issue also. Im also using Vista, though I have almost every feature related to Vista turned off permantently, heh.

I havent had the issue quite as seriously as you seem to though. Its only on occasion that this happens to me. Happened once tonight as a matter of fact. Im not sure if it has anything to do with my success in avoiding crashes or not, but I usually try to save just before I attempt to do anything that gets me a CTD. I do this (other than for the most obvious reason) because when I dont its at that point I usually get the crash. I cant recall any instance where I still crashed after doing this.

Maybe it's irrelevant. But sometimes the little things that seem unrelated end up making the difference.

Edit: This just occured to me. One thing that I have noticed that often causes CTDs in the CS for me is when I place an NPC and then attempt to edit the form rather than editing the Form and then placing the NPC. Be carefull that this isnt something you are doing, as it may be the source of some crashes also. By your description in the OP, it seems that you are doing this.

  7. Here is what Im trying to do:

At the end of dialogue between the PC and the NPC I want to disable the NPC's ref imediately, or as soon as possible. I want to simulate the NPC going invis and escaping, without the PC actually being able to do anything about it if he/she has ways of finding invisible characters.

However, each time dalogue ends and the script disables the NPC, I get a CTD. At first I had it in a script that runs right at the end of the dialogue, then I moved that to a quest stage update, but nothing I do seems to fix the problem. Im not sure what to do about it.

Anyone have any advice on how I can do this or what might be going wrong?

  8. Ive observed several times that when I am near a sound source and open my inventory that the sound will disapear. Ive not done any extensive testing to find out every detail, but I have found that if you go into the esc menu and alter your sound there, and then alter it again the same way the sounds come back.

Its possible, especially since you were in an exterior cell, that youve experienced something similar without realising it. Try that little experiment though and see if it has an effect.

  9. Lol is this the same mod you wanted the lava and water together for? If you make some lava pools all you need is a retex for ice pools :)

same one. I was thinking of showing rivers of lava meeting actual rivers to try to represent an aspect of the war between water and fire. Yeah, I needed lava pools too lol. I can hit two birds with one stone. Ill have to learn how to do it first though, Im just starting to learn about textures and meshes right now. Havent even gotten to creating anything myself yet.

  10. :P I feel pretty assured that there'd be some reward offered. If nothing else than just to see some cool new dungeons and fight some cool new baddies.

Ice... Hmmm... Making a frozen puddle of water would be easy I think, icicles would be a touch harder but not much. I haven't seen anything that adds those, but some time spent learning blender could suit your purposes fine.

I'm absolutely not a modeller >.> I've made a few custom animations but that's about the extent of my skill in that department.

Yeah, if there are no takers Ill work on it myself. Im not much of an artist though, thats my only worry. I havent been in an art class since the fifth grade and have never attempted anything artistic since.

  11. aether refers to space, for the most part. It also refers to essence, or existence. It seems to have alot of different meanings. For my purposes it means gods.

As far as my mod goes, they wont really be dungeons where you go kill things like most. They will be homes to four different races. The Incendians, the Undans, the Aerians, and the Terrans who inhabit the world Terra.

The first three I mentioned are engaged in a war, fighting to gain control of this small area in the center of the world space: Aetheria. The Terrans, once the dominant race, were overthrown long ago after the "Aetherians" abandoned their world. (The Aetherians are known by us as the Ayleids) They are now enslaved by the other three races, though there are a few free Terrans seeking to regain power.

What you will be able to do in this world is choose sides and effect the outcome of the war in various ways.

Thats all Ill say for now. Ive got the world space finished and Im starting on the first city to be built.

But still, the ice would be cool and much appreciated.

  12. Ive been looking around for some mods that just add ice crystals or frozen water types of things but I havent had much luck. Im making a mod right now that is based around the ancient concept of the five basic elements fire, water, air, earth, and aether.

For a icey dungeon I have planned I want to use the textures from this mod

    http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=19621

But all it does is make the Ayleid ruins look blue, so Id like to add some ice sickles and pools of frozen water here and there to really enhance the cold atmosphere some more.

If anyone happens to know where I can find something like this Id appreciate it if you let me know.

If there isnt anything, then Im wondering if anyone more artistic than myself would be willing to make some things.

Im thinking of mostly ice sickles. But anything icey in general would be cool. Ice sheets that can be placed on walls or on the ground, and pools of frozen water. maybe some small piles of snow.

Anyone like the idea? Im sure this sort of thing could be used to enhance more than just my little dungeon. All of snowy Northern Cyrodiil for instance...

  13. raise the water level of an exterior cell without raising the level of the cell next to it? I think it's possible, but can look pretty funky.

Oh no, raising different levels of the water within the same cell.

I think the only option is to do as you suggested and use static meshes.

  14. Oh it just looks like a hunk of land right now. Im just trying to get some of the effects that I want before I go much further.

Looks like some of what Im wanting to do just isnt possible. Which brings me to my next questiong

What would it take to make it so that you could raise the water level in a particular area of a cell without raising the water level in the entire cell like you do with land? Not possible atm, I know. But it seems that this ability would be quite valuable to all of the moding community if it could be done.

  15. Hi all. I'm fairly new to Oblivion modding and was curious as to whether or not those of you who add houses/castles/etc. to the game use custom meshes or just use buildings that are already available in game?

So far I'm enjoying putting various buildings down wherever I want them, but am concerned that my buildings are going to be boring since they will pretty much look like other buildings in the world, you know?

So does it really matter that I don't use custom meshes? Can a location be made to look "original" even if using content that's already used in other places?

    Thanks!

Personally I think that custom meshes are unecessary, though they do make things much easier as far as looking original. When using the vanilla stuff I guess it depends entirely on what yor own imagination can conjure up. For instance:

    http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/images/2...-1254785772.jpg

Is something Imade with purely vanilla stuff that youve probably seen a thousand times. But I think this looks fairly original and interesting. Im sure anyone could do similar things with houses.

  16. never mind.

New questiong though, the ocean that is supposed to be there, and actually is, disappears when i enter the cell with lava. What does it take to make it so that you can still see the ocean in the distance while keeping the lava at just the area you are in?

Does anyone know how to do this? Im guessing it has to do with water LOD but I cant find any tutorials on this particular subject. I have the lava in the cells that I want, and the normal water in the cells that I want, but when Im in one or the other ALL water looks like the water thats in the cell Im in atm.

  17. never mind.

  18. Hi I wanna use deadly reflex but can't seem to get it because of I can't seem to use Oblivion Mod Manager or Wyre Bash, which atleast one of which is required.

I can't install OBMM because I use some older mods that mess with the oblivion installation directory, and Wire Bash's website seems to be down.

I need these mods so i can adjust the mod launch order to this:

    [all other ESM files]

    [Horse Combat Master.esm]

    [all other esps]

ONE Deadly Reflex 5 - Timed Block esp, if you want to use Timed Block

    Deadly Reflex 5 - Combat Moves.esp

Now since I can't use OBMM or Wyre Bash, is there a way i can manually adjust this or does anyone know of a mod that can do this?

    THANKS LOOOOVE

BOSS should be able to take care of this for you. Just search for it in the file search and it will probably be the first on the list. It will arrange all your files in "nearly" the best possible order. It should probably be enough for your needs. I think it takes special knowledge to know when BOSS is wrong, cause it usually isnt.

  19. Im working on a mod where I have a volcano and I would like some pools/rivers of lava flowing from it. I also have an ocean right near by, however. I was wondering if it was possible to get the two in the same world space together.

I couldnt think of any instances in oblivion where this was done that I could look at, so I thought Id ask here.

  20. I understand that some conflicts, like scripting effects, ID changes, and geography changes can be pretty bad if you have two mods that conflict. But what about somewhat more innane conflicts.

Say you have one mod that alters the base stat of a sword and also applies new meshes and textures.

Maybe another mod alters the same swords base stats and looks but also includes a really cool quest or some other feature unrelated to that weapon.

The two mods would be conflicting as far as the alterations to the stats of the sword go, and the latest one in the load order would be the one that wins.

Im wondering if this sort of thing is bad in the end if you have alot of mods that do this. Are these kind of conflicts unimportant or can they lead to performance issues and crashing?
