  1. Sounds familiar, like phone tapping for example....

Sorry, don't want to get off topic here, I am quite interested if anyone in the US knows much of anything that goes on in Italy (once living abroad, I saw what an island-nation the US is, kind of like...Atlantis, maybe), but what phone tapping? They made information they gathered illegally in the past, legal?

  2. Watch the tone, implying that someone is "less-bright" because they don't share your views is about as close to flaming as you can get.

I did nothing of the kind. Less bright members of the species, is what I was saying in that sentence, regardless. I'm talking about the whole dumb species that we're all a part of (me included of course!). Taking poison is universally regarded as not-bright. That's obvious. How would you define it? Common sense? Self-defense? Survival instinct? Whatever. It doesn't matter.

As for trying to split hairs of 7, 5, 9...*sigh* I'm not even going to touch that with a ten-foot karma pole, and I'd advise you to do the same.http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/smile.gif *That* is my personal opinion. http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/yes.gif

I think I'll edit out the rest. I don't need to reiterate why taking poison is not a bright thing for anyone to do.

As for further technical concerns...where there's a Will, there's a Way. The money will follow.

  3. I can't say that it particularly bothers me. Some things I don't like, but honestly if a sex scandal is all a President ever got into, I'd be a much happier man.

Can't say that I disagree with you on that one, RZ1029, within reason. But that is a topic for another thread.

The difference is that this sex scandal involves multiple under-age prostitutes at Berlusconi's villa for ongoing sex parties, under-age prostitutes that come from organizations that (as far as I remember hearing) have connections with the mafia.

Then again, connections with the mafia are the things that have haunted Berlusconi for the last 40 years.

Having lived 30 years in the US and 10 in Italy, let me tell you, there's no comparison between what they get away with in the US and in Italy. There's no end to it here and I'll leave it at that because I don't want to get started.

Oh, well, one last thing. Now that he's on trial, again, they're using their usual tactic to pass new laws that will make legal what was illegal when he got busted...just digest that for a while. Retroactive legality of once-illegal actions.

  4. While I can very easily see the Doom and Gloom viewpoint on this and hear the fascist footsteps striking the ground in cadence, it might be as simple as a money-making venture as was earlier pointed out in the thread. When there simply aren't enough real bad guys, you have to drum them up somehow. http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/confused.gif
  5. iPhone app to report "suspicious behaviour"

Now, am I the only one that thinks that this is not only sick and twisted, but thoroughly un-American?

This seems to have one foot already over the Fascist Precipice, with the body (and mind, of course) already following into the void.

Look at the screenshots. "suspicious activity", "suspicious looking"...these things are so undefinable that every dingus with a chip on his or her shoulder could report anyone or anything for whatever reason. I mean, does this thing really work? Are they actually trying to be efficient? Is this another one of those Fascism Feelers they send out, seeing how much people are leaning in one direction or another so that the big "They" can ascertain what they can presently get away with?

What the hell's up with this thing?

  6. Well last nite they announced it is being raised to a level 7 nuclear disaster from a previous rating of 5 .There was footage of Japanese families being told that its unlikely they will ever be able to return home and that the quarantine zone is likely to be extended , by how much I don't know. This now puts it on the level with Chernobyl.

Yeah, I was just about to post the very same thing. I actually just saw it on the news (sky) here in Italy.

I should say that I'm surprised that there are people here saying that this should reassure us as to nuclear power, but I'm not...am I? I don't know. I often give people too much credit, so then when something as ignorant as that pops out, I'm often taken by surprise. I'm usually quite harsh with people, as a species, but that's always tempered with compassion, especially for the less-bright members. Otherwise...

The technology for renewable energy is already here, pro-nuke folks. It's only that no one wants to spend enough money to implement enough windmills, turbines, panels, etc. It's simply a question of wanting to do it. Discussions of "economic feasability" are ignorant and unenlightened. How "economically feasible" is it to poison areas of our landmass so that they'r uninhabitable, while making the oceans radioactive at the same time? Those type of discussions are always centered on a self-serving logic that, surprise surprise, leaves out huge areas of consideration.

Poor, poor people that believe in this poisonous folly.

  7. *grumbles*

Recent birthday pushed me into the next age bracket in this poll. :wallbash:

And I'm old enough to know better than to tell people how old I am.

    hahahahaha, happy birthday!http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/laugh.gif

  8. Sure, but most people in power are not in power for the right reason.

Who knows how many are and how many aren't. I would say, though, that most of them can be swayed one way or another by enough motivated, concentrated public opinion, especially if it comes from their home constituents.

Of course, we need to remove the lobbying power that corporations have in the US, like it's already been mentioned. Was that you, Marharth? I think allowing equal time slots to all candidates would be a hammer blow to the corporate powers-that-be, immediately chopping off a great many hands-in-the-pockets of politicians. Once the playing field is leveled, people can act more like people, and be influenced by other people (their voters) more easily.

Once again it comes down to streamlining.

  9. WHOOPS!? I saw the You Tube video on the front page of the site and assumed that was the video you were talking about. :S

That video is SUPPOSED to be about Citizens United vs. FEC, but barely even mentions it.

    Cool beans.http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/thumbsup.gif

It's not freedom from education, it's freedom from being forced to pay for and participate in education. Also, I only shout when it is necessary (i.e. when I feel very strongly about the subject). Furthermore, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and a host of other important and outstanding individuals in our country's history were homeschooled; you cannot take one sample and use it to judge the whole.

What do you mean "Of course it is"? If I say "You need to eat whole grains every day, so the government should a) spend tax money on whole grains to provide for you and b) force you to eat them," I have just uttered a completely ridiculous statement! And what I meant about marharth was that people were attacking his character instead of his arguments (not everyone was doing this, just some people [especially Aurielius]).

A word of advice in social skills based on things I've noticed in life: The louder somebody shouts to get their point across, the generally less important it is what they have to say.

As for school, somebody's got to pay for it, and it has to be separate from religion and private interest. And of course George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and many other people living in Other Centuries were homeschooled. hahahahaha, what kind of argument is that? http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/biggrin.gif Sorry, but that was a good one.

As for "of course...', it's the duty of those that know more to help out those less fortunate. Period. We're trying to correct problems here, remember? Maybe you think you are living in a Democracy (you live in the US, right?...) Well, I hate to break it to you (not really but it's more "polite" that way), but you don't. You do not live in a Democracy. That's Modern Myth Number 736. You live in a Republic, thank the gods, which is based at times on smarter people telling less smart people what they have to do.

And it doesn't matter if you don't go to a public school, you still benefit. Where do you think most doctors, ambulance drivers, lawyers, chefs, etc etc ad nauseum get their education? Do you really want a country full of dolts, dicecaster? Who's that going to help? Besides the people who want to control them, that is.

I know what you meant about marharth, but you're wrong. I like marharth, so don't misunderstand. However, he was showing contradictory behavior and people pointed it out. No one was attacking him. If what is done is actually appropriate to whatever's being said, it is not ad hominem.

It means something when a retired military veteran, who has command experience, says to someone that they don't show the right characteristics for (mostly thankless) military service. Military service implies among many other things the sublimation of ego, selfless dedication to concepts such as duty to one's country, obeying superiors regardless of the rightness of what they say, etc., all characteristics that marharth doesn't usually show here. Aurielius (et al.) was more than right to point this out. He's doing marharth a favor for giving his frank opinion. It's a big damn decision to join the military and I hope he judges well his situation, whichever path he eventually chooses.

Enough about marharth! http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/biggrin.gif Everybody wishes him well, regardless of what's said!

  10. Oh, you mean that documentary by Annie Leonard that's supposed to be about a court case which they hardly even talk about? Already saw it.

What court case? Unless it matters, I don't care if they didn't talk about it. That's like saying someone went out for a walk, discovered Atlantis, and then some debunker said, "Oh, yeah the walk that discovered Atlantis that she didn't finish"....what's your point? It sounds...dismissive of a whole for a possible piece.

@Dicecaster, As to your "Freedom from Education" theory...

I don't even know where to begin...how would that possibly help cure some of the ills of the nation? Having stupider people...really! Seems like you're shortsighted on the importance of where your taxes go and you simply care more for not spending them than fostering intelligence in the very people who need to turn things around. Taking away public education is...I don't know how to put this gently...but it's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. There, that was gentle.

I'd also like to point out that your arguments against developing social skills in school are pretty poor as well, Dicecaster. there's only one person that comes to mind who's screaming in capitol letters and that's you, and you were homeschooled. Ironic.

Like, "IT IS NOT FOR ANYONE TO DECIDE THAT ANYONE ELSE NEEDS EDUCATION, UNDERSTAND?!" and "QUIT WAILING ON MARHARTH!" taken from your posts.

"Of course it is", in answer to your first shout, and "yes, it will happen" for your second...when someone says things such as, "stop quoting things that are 200 years old" when we're talking about a country that's that old more or less, well, that's a pretty unintelligent thing to say for marharth, and he should be told so. He's smarter than that. And I could go on--I did in fact, but didn't add it to the thread--and that's the nature of a debate.

  11. To touch back upon the evils of corporations, I urge you all to Go To the Website of the folks who made "The Corporation", an incredibly well-made documentary on the history of the corporation itself, its origins, evolution, and present state. I found it very entertaining, illuminating, and thoroughly well-done.

Under their "The Film" tab, you can watch their shareware version of their documentary, 2 and a half hours of eye-opening fact for how these Entities really work today. You can also hop over to YouTube and find it there in a few guises. It has 23 parts, so you'll know if you got the right one. Regardless, going to the website's a sure thing as they'll link you there. Plus, they sell (for the very hard-core interested) a special dvd release that has something like six to eight hours of extra material! http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/unsure.gif

  12. Free education is one of the hallmarks of advanced society. And it's one of the reasons, in my opinion, why Europe is pulling away from the US, because not only are the first 12 years free, but college level *is* too (and now I say *is* because I'm using Italy as an example: yes it does cost something in taxes, and books cost, too, BUT it is something that any working person could afford and the tax cost is proportionally based on the amount of money you make, and the whole package is a fraction of what it would cost in the US). An educated populace is a strong populace.

Lowering the drop-out age, I think, would be disastrous for the same reasons that having to pay 10+ thousand dollars a year minimum for college is disastrous. You let people drop out early and they will, especially the stupid ones. And since when do stupid kids know what's best for them? or "adults" for that matter? Poor, societally-undernourished kids will drop out by the tens of thousands, and many wouldn't spend the time getting a GED. What would be the point? They can't afford college and they're already out, they'll "make their own way". How? Obviously something illegal, or along the lines of, "Do you want fries with that?"

No, no, forcing kids to stay in school is overall a very good thing. Hell's bells, forcing their butts into college would be a good thing. High School gives you almost no skills that are useful in the world, aside from social interaction.

Letting the little buggers scamp out of the only hope they have of getting educated will only further demotivate the already demotivated.

  13. No, Shivering isles is not required. There is an MM-Shivering isles patch, and that is what you use IF you are already using/have Shivering Isles. No Shivering Isles (SI)=no patch, because the patch requires that you have Shivering Isles installed.

Go ahead and use MMM. If it's an OMOD that gives you an option and asks you if you use Shivering Isles, just say no. If you install manually, just don't include the SI patch. If it ends up there anyway, just delete it from your data folder. http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/thumbsup.gif
