  1. There's Qarl's Texture Pack III, which is really nice if your PC and GFX card can handle it, or you can find the reduced versions of these (Redimised iirc). There is also Bomret's Texture Pack for SI - much like QTP3 but for SI.

There are quite a few other smaller, but very nice texture packs you can download from TesNexus. The trick is not to get too carried away with adding as many mods as possible right at the beginning. Try out a few 1st, then once you're happy that your game is running smoothly, then you can add in a few more. This is especially useful if you're new to adding mods.

... and yes you can have other mods running with SI and KoTN, in fact some mods require them to be installed.

  2. yeah, chassis fans do help a lot... in fact I'd say they are essential with todays technology. As a matter of interest though, are you by any chance overclocking your GTX260, maybe you've over-tweeked the settings... just a thought. My ASUS GTX260 Matrix comes with iTracker which has overclock settings, maybe your's has some sort of software doing the same?
  3. Have you tested the new card with any other graphics intensive games to see if the same problem occurs with them? This could help determine whether the problem is card related (driver/hardware) or if it is indeed oblivion causing the problem.

@ Crimson Knight: My GTX260 works fine running oblivion with HDR lighting

  4. As LFact suggested, the unofficial patches are the ideal starting mods. I personally would play the game vanilla for a bit first to get used to the original environment, then maybe start adding in mods as you go. I found that I appreciated the custom mods more after I had played the vanilla game for a while.

Once you have a bit more confidence in installing mods, you could start implementing overhaul mods such as Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and COBL. Another mod I would suggest later on would be Better Cities.

I would also suggest getting yourself Oblivion Mod Manager early on :)

  5. this is down to the hgec textures not being used, either because of them being missing, or installed in the wrong place. If you are sure you have installed the high rez textures correctly, you can check that they are in their proper location. For example, in "data\textures\characters\imperial\female" you should be able to see the files "footfemale.dds", "footfemale_n.dds", "handfemale.dds" & "handfemale_n.dds".

This should be repeated for each of the dark elf and orc folders (and any other folders) located in the "data\textures\characters" folder

  6. 4. "Look at the muscles on you!" "You have the hands of a healer." "Look at the muscles on you!" "You're a sneaky-looking sort." "You're a sneaky-looking sort." "You have the hands of a healer." "Look at the muscles on you!"... It's no wonder I end up murdering everyone I pass by.

    5. "Pleasure doing--" *click* "You bought that for a--" *click* "Pleasure doing--" *click* "I wouldn't make that deal with--" *click* "That's a good--" *click* "That's a good deal!"

Oblivion's version of the Microsoft Office Assistant it seems hehe

  7. yeah I read that too... but I only run about 150 mods maxxed, so even if I BSA'd all with an esp each it would be less than 320ish including DLCs and vanilla files. Its not a major issue, but it would be nice to have that knowledge ;)
  8. I did think about that, but then I'd have to do the same with other replacement mods like DarkUI DarN etc, and tbh that would start to get a tad messy for my liking ;) Especially if I wanted to change to a diferent DarkUI colour (I switch between a couple of the recolurs for variation)
  9. I've been recently converting all of my downloded mods to BSA format, as I personally think its a lot tidier and also it means I don't have to worry about overwriting files in the data folder, and then find that if I want to remove a mod not only do I deactivate that, but also every other mod it overwrote... then reactivate them... again.... in a specific order. I shuddered at the thought of a reinstall.

My main problem at the moment is regarding how to get BSA converted retexture mods like QTP3 (that don't have an esp) to work ingame. I know about the basic rules of BSAing from reading up on the forums ie: 2GB max // add to oblivion.ini // name exactly same as esp.... etc etc, but I found that doesn't force the retextures to override the vanilla.

I even tried creating a dummy esp, which does load the corresponding bsa, but I found that unless the esp has a reference to one of the retextured files, nothing happens. If this is the case, then would I only need to reference one retex file, or all?

Also, I have my copy of QTP3 split into 3 BSAs to cater for the 2GB limit, how would I go about creating just 1 esp that would utilise all 3 BSAs.... and work in game?

I've managed to get every other mod using an esp to work as BSA (OOO, Cobl, UOP + every race, armour + weapon mod I have). I feel it's something that should be really easy to do, but I've hit noob mode.

  10. 1. Had an imperial city civil war amoungst the guards in one of the districts, which was very bizarre (right after I had installed cats and rats).

    2. I had just started a new character, got them out of the sewers, and decided to venture on to cheydinhal. This was the first character I'd started fresh with OOO installed. Nearly got to the gates when I got jumped by some bandits who were really damaging me badly, so I had to bail and run hoping the guards would help out.

I managed to zone into Cheydinhal, but so did one of the bandits, who then proceeded to run all the way to the castle and into the barracks. I followed all the chasing guards into the barracks and iside saw about a dozen all pounding on this bandit. I had t wait for ages for them all return to their guard posts so I could deal with the other 2 bandits, who were just waitng outside the gate.

    3. Some weird encounters with highwaymen / bandits where instead of demanding cash / attacking they just strike up a normal conversation and are generally polite. Similar situation with non-aggroing wildlife ironically, obviously not talking, but just wander around as if you're not there, and I'm not sneaking or wearing any chameleon items).
