Sadly, I don't know, I never use backstab :( -
I have to admit, I didn't like it at first either, I was expecting something more like Oblivion and ended up with KoTOR (which I did love). Now I'm on my third play through and I'm still loving the game (if I could just find a good mod that changes the mage robes appearance). Give it a chance, it is an amazing game. Or go for Fallout 3 if you really want that FPS style RPG.
