I have a 2 gb geforce 550ti graphics card. Will turning off vsync cause a hit to framerate or graphics quality?

Whenever i load skyrim there is a box in the upper left corner of my screen that says Virtual Vsync universal.gpu.virtualization that never seems to disappear. Is there any way to get rid of this?
