Beating up on an earlier version of the software is irrelevant at this point. The same thing goes for many pieces of first generation technology, all of which had notable flaws. The first gen IPhone had a terrible battery life, poor wireless service and several issues, including one where the phone could not be charged at all, and that didn't stop it.

And yes. Because IE is the default, IT professionals would recommend it for troubleshooting purposes, as you said. Truthfully there are plenty of things that work in IE and don't work in Firefox and/or Chrome.
