Can I ask why people pay for high end gaming machines? The vast majority of games are ports that can be played on console settings quite easily with a mid range PC, for people who don't think eye candy is important we do spend an awful lot of money to get as much of it as possible. Graphics are far more important to people than they let on, AA, AF, high resolutions, fancy shaders and DX11 don't improve gameplay but we must think they are important or we wouldn't be paying out hundreds extra to have them. I'm not suggesting they are more important than gameplay, I am suggesting those who think they don't matter are kidding themselves.
Good points Jim
I did spend a lot of money on my last build, I wanted a rig that could handle anything I chucked at it, and it does. I'm also continually building rigs for other people and never once have I been asked for an "average" machine, they all want the fastest thing they can get.
Good graphics are important to me, I love the look of a well polished game on a big screen (and the sound of it through a big home theatre setup too), but if the gameplay and the storyline are pants then good graphics don't mean jack and vice versa.
For all those folk that say "you don't need good graphics to enjoy a game" you're quite right up to a point, I've enjoyed some games that have had poor graphics, but I'd have enjoyed them a whole lot more if the graphics had been good and the games looked more polished.
Nowadays, with the resources and technology that game studio's have to hand, I don't see any reason why we can't have a good spread of everything, good story lines, good game mechanics and decent graphics.
The modders on these site's for instance, are coming up with some fantastic stuff for our games, surely the so called "professionals can do the same.

I'd preorder, but I'm waiting for GOTY. That way I won't have to buy expansions separately or deal with all of the fun little bugs that come with a new game engine.
I'd like to say the same, but I'll cave in and buy the game and then buy the GOTY to get the expansions.
How long does it usually take for a GOTY to come after the games initial release anyhoo ?

I know that, its the constant porting of console graphics straight to PC without even tickling them up a bit and allowing ingame support for AA & AF thats narking me
Fallout 3 PC supported both x16 AA and x15 AF. Not sure what your point here is.
Dragon Knight Saga - no ingame AA support (ingame screenspace AA option did trout all).
Darksiders - no ingame AA or AF support
Gothic 4 Arcadia - no ingame AA support
Venetica - no ingame AA or AF support (ingame screenspace AA option did trout all).
Sniper Ghost Warrior - no ingame AA support
Risen - no ingame AA support
To name just a few off the top of my head, its a trend that will continue because game studio's save time and money by spending less time altering games for PC use.
I'd happily pay more for a dedicated PC version of a game than a direct console port.
I don't think it takes a genius to get my point.

@ InAComaDial999
Thanks for that, I was also tired of having to switch DVD's.

Sorry your disappointed at something that isn't even in beta form yet.
Stop putting words in my mouth, I said "I will be disappointed IF".

I don't see why you somehow connected graphics and gameplay as one... They are two very different things.
Agreed, of course they are, point I'm trying to make is that its the sum of the parts that make up the whole, how many time have you seen comments like "great storyline let down by poor gameplay" or "fantastic graphics but poor quests" or "great graphics, good and involving quest but clunky gameplay" ?
Wouldn't it be great if more and more game studio's got it all right, not just parts of it ?
RE your comment:
You know, there's a reason games has console graphics - so that they can work on consoles... If they release a game with graphics that can't run on Consoles, you know what will happen? You guessed it; they can't run on the consoles...
I know that, its the constant porting of console graphics straight to PC without even tickling them up a bit and allowing ingame support for AA & AF thats narking me
As for the consoles, I gave my Xbox 360 to my mates 10 year old son, and I bought a PS3 a couple of weeks back as I wanted to play "Demons Souls" (PS3 release only) and thought it would be handy for blurays. Took it back and got a refund the next day. Microsoft & Sony ? Hmmph, think I'll stick to my PC's.
Guys, as far as the screens go I think Skyrims looking pretty good so far, I just hope it lives up to all of our expectations.

It is a well made trailer, and Stardusk is right, it is brutal. Kinda reminds me of scenes from the films "28 Days Later" and " 28 Weeks Later" when the Rage Virus kicks in.

Peaked my interest, gonna keep an eye on that one.
Is it open world or linear ?

Its high time that games had fantastic graphics Graphics look great with the dynamic shadows and we haven't even seen the lighting or animations yet AND indepth and involving stories/quests Again, you don't even know what they are yet AND longevity and replayability Replayability? Seriously your bitching about a game that lets you change EVERYTHING in the game at a whim? You could make everyone into flying cucumbers if you want, how can you hesitate on the prospect of replayability?
For realz. And the game is going to cost $50. I can swing a hammer for 5 hours and afford this game. I would pay that much just for the construction set with no content in it.
Hey I'm not bitchiing, I'm making a point, so calm down.
The fact remains that nowadays with all the resources that game studio's have to hand there's no excuse for bad graphics, Beths games have graphics that are better than some but worse than others, how many games have come out on pc lately that have console standard graphics and not even any in game AA support, they cost just as much to buy as games that do. If Skyrim comes out with console standard graphics I will be disappointed.
As for the replayability side of things the point I was making wasn't directed at Beths games (although the main quest in Oblivion could have been,,,,,better), lets face it, theres a whole host of games out there that should have a decent construction set.
To emphasise that point I've got a carrier bag full of games in the cupboard that have taken me less than 10 hours to complete and I won't play them again.
Ask yourselves this question, why shouldn't we have our cake and eat it?
People keep making comments like "good graphics dont make a good game", thats right, they don't.
But.
Good and involving quest/storyline and lousy graphics/clunky gameplay = average product.
Lousy quest/storyline and superb graphics/gameplay = average product.
Good and involving quest/storyline and superb graphics/excellent gameplay = excellent product.
Shouldn't all game studios be trying to attain the latter of the three?

The HTC Wildfire is my first smartphone, I've always been a phone is a phone talk n text type guy but had had my Sony Ericson K800i for about 4 - 5 years, so thought I'd give a smartphone a try.
To be honest, while I get along ok with the Wildfire, I wish I'd stuck with the old K800i and bought a netbook and an internet dongle, which I am infact going to do in a couple of weeks time.
-
I dont think I'm being picky at all.
I want a good product for the cash I'm handing over, I would have thought every one would want that.
-
I'd be surprised if Skyrim were to be the last one because as a rule of thunb, you don't kill the golden goose.
-
3. Then you make a better game. And stop whining of what you want, its THEIR game, THEY are making it, not you. The only thing you do is to decide if you will buy it or not.
Now just think for a minute, yes they are the ones making it, but WE are the ones that will be paying for it and they WILL make a mint out of it.
And I damn well want my moneys worth.
Its high time that games had fantastic graphics AND indepth and involving stories/quests AND longevity and replayability.

Running an HTC Wildfire on droid 2.1
Battery life with light use (as my alarm clock, couple of calls a day, short browsing session etc) and I can get 4 - 5 days out of it.
Sit and play with it constantly and though its not quite greedy as the Desire's you may as well plug the charger in before you start.

however i have to agree on some studies that say, if an individual lacks social background and immerses into a game too much the game itself might well have a "triggerfunction" (no pun intended, i am making a serious point) releasing a huge amount of aggressive emotion which wasn't put there by videogames in the first place...
A fair point, but you could say that in those circumstance that if all that was required to induce a violent event was a triggerpoint, then that individual already had a condition and/or was disposed to violent reaction that could be triggered by anything.
If someone goes on a violent or murderous spree then the mental instability is already there, triggered by whatever set that event in motion, the core problem that needs to be addressed is finding these individuals that are predisposed to this type of behaviour beforehand and giving them the help they need, which is nigh on impossible as society tends to have an "I'm alright jack" attitude untill the you know what hits the fan and everybody needs something to blame.

Premium membership is £20 a year, that works out at 5.4 pence a day.
Tell me, for that price, where else could you get unlimited software downloads of free game content from highspeed servers with the added knowledge that all downloads have been virus checked ?

And I wouldnt have a problem with steam, if it was an OPTIONAL service.
Something like 'We have discovered that you either do not have an internet connection, or you are offline. Would you like to opt out of the Steam Service for this game?' in a Yes/Cancel box.
See, because not everyone has an internet connection on the computer they play games on. Shock and horror amirite?
You are right, thats exactly how it should be.

I think that the genius's that come up with these pearls of wisdom have access to far too many excuses these days.
Throughout history some children have been misbehaved, nasty, violent etc and on occasion have grown up to be misbehaved, nasty, violent and sometimes murderous adults. Some kids were little angels till the day they grabbed a gun and tried to wipe out half a town. It happened long before video games were even thought of.
Its been blamed on horror movies, records played backwards, the wrong sort of books, gang culture, knife culture, hoodie culture, gun culture, peer pressure, satanic worship, drink, drugs, the wrong crowd, boredom, the internet, bad parents, the wrong influences, in short you name it, its been blamed.
Do you want to know what it is, the thing we can actually blame ?
Its us, its a human condition, without warning something goes click inside the head of an individual and sanity leaves the room.
And I don't think there will ever be a sure way to stop that thing going click.

Hmmm, food for thought.
Certainly seems like its going to be a fair bit deeper than Oblivion, here's hoping anyhoo.

The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking
I'm actually reading the same thing right now!
I'm also reading On Second Thought: Outsmarting Your Mind's Hard-Wired Habits.
Just finished "The Grand Design".
If you enjoyed that you may enjoy "Cycles Of Time" by Roger Penrose, just getting stuck into it now, makes you think a bit.

LOL! Now we gotta watch some f***ing ads before being able to choose a server. Now this is pathetic. When do we start paying for files?
I do contribute towards the running costs of this site and I wouldn't dream of making a statement like that.
No ads means too little revenue which means no Nexus.
The Nexus sites are great but they have to earn their keep, when there is a problem with an ad (or anything else) Robin is on it as soon as he finds out about it.

Oooh, WW3 jeez, bad thought.
I don't think it'll matter how it starts (if it starts), with weapons technology at the level it is now I think very few of us would survive it.

Game Debate: graphics vs. content vs. combat, etc...

All very true, well put.
But some game studio's seem to manage ok, where as others do less well, to put it mildly
