  1. You know what's bloody irritating?

I haven't insulted anyone, I haven't just hurled around that Ulfric's a racist baselessly (I was careful to avoid invoking the situation in Windhelm overmuch, I did bring up Markarth, but not in a particularly emotional manner), I was quite civil in every post I made but this fact is ignored and run over in favor of a snide tone of voice in the replies to me, and then an accusation that the people here against the Stormcloaks are ragingly delusional. Emotional. Whatever. Which comes paired with assertions that I should ignore in-game sources of information because they have reason to be biased (this is fair) without any counterevidence to suggest that they are wrong or that their writer is, in fact, delusional (this is not fair). Something being suspect or circumstantial is not equivalent to it being irrelevant.

C'mon, guys. You want respect, you have to give it. I'm not really interested in participating in this discussion further until that's done. Those of you arguing against me were not as blatantly rude as some of the other pro-Imperials in this thread, but I don't appreciate having my views dismissed summarily when I haven't done anything that, supposedly, Imperial supporters seem to always do. Go through all of my posts here, and if you can find something I said based on 'feelings' rather than what we have in-game evidence of, if you can find me accusing Ulfric of being a racist, if you can find me using any insults to refer to him worse than "impatient" or "possibly powerlusting" or if you can find me adopting a snide tone with anyone here.

Additionally, dismissing the Thalmor dossier on the grounds of "we don't see their dossier on Tullius, Elisif, etc." is not a particularly strong argument. Stepping back a minute, I think there's a fair argument to be made that Skyrim would be able to hold out in a direct invasion, but AFAIK you're relying on inference and assumptions to make it. (Skyrim looks down on casters more than the other provinces and doesn't have the technological edge that's commonly associated to Hammerfell. How does that play in? It's supposedly a very mountainous country which is cited in its favor, but you move through a lot of lowlands and there aren't major chokepoints around most of the major holds, etc.) I don't mind that. I think it's a pretty cogent point, but I don't think it's fair to draw the assumption that Skyrim would be so difficult to invade when there's no more unshakable in-game proof to that end than there is to dismiss the dossier on the basis of possible other dossiers we don't see.

The writers of the game present to us certain information for a reason, and I think it's completely reasonable to take note of the fact that other controversial matters (the gods in particular, the racial situation in Windhelm, the Great War itself) tend to have multiple unreliable narrators arguing from opposite points. There is (to my knowledge, and I'm new to Skyrim, so I could be wrong) no direct answer for the dossier and the book on Markarth, meaning that the only concrete criticism that can be levied at them is that there is bias - not that they have no basis in truth.

  2. o.O

Last few pages are a lot more hostile and dismissive (and annoyingly so) from both the pro-Stormcloak and pro-Imperial crowds than I think the topic really warrants... Felt like every other post I was reading was a veiled insult at the other side. Not a particularly harsh one, but not particularly friendly, either.

  3. Make two spells and two magic effects. One set will be your original ability and effects.

Make miran_vampweaknessholdereffect a Magic Effect of type script. The script would be something like...

    Spell property akSpell

Event OnEffectStart (actor akTarget, actor akCaster)

    utility.wait(5)

    if(akCaster.getlightlevel() <=> X)

    akSpell.cast(akCaster)

    endif

    EndEvent

where akSpell is your original ability. replace X with the light value and <=> with the appropriate operator (never did much with light levels before).

Place the original light condition on the new holder ability that uses your holder effect, in order for this to work right.

  4. ...He wears simple monk's robes and your first thought is "this man looks like he should be going Conan on some fools?"

Erandur is talented in Restoration and Destruction.

IIRC the stock Erandur carried a glass or elven mace in my game.

He does, but still. Mer in a monk's habit with a one-handed mace. Not the first thing that makes me think "Hulk Smash!"

He even casts Destruction spells extensively during the quest you have to do before he gives you the option to use him as a follower.

  5. I don't think particularly much of the Greybeards - the only reason I side with them over Delphine is that her bloodlust is more problematic than their nonsense. While they are to blame for this in part, Ulfric has ownership of his own mistakes.

If Ulfric was a wise man himself, if Ulfric's first goal was really what is best for Skyrim, he would have taken Torygg's ear and brought a united Skyrim to separate from the Empire, with methods that would not have left plenty of old war heroes who respected him (Jarl Balgruuf) standing on the other side. He was either too lusty for power or too impatient to see that* and just started with metaphorically lopping people's heads off. Nor would Ulfric have hypocritically been so eager to suppress the residents of the Reach back when, who were making overtures to be recognized as a legitimate province in their own right - those actions lead straight into much of the current instability in Markarth, not to mention the ridiculous amount of power the Silver-Blood family wields over the citizens there. I can't decide if I hate them or the Blackbriars more. (I dislike them both enough that there's a good chance if the Stormcloaks kicked both out of power rather than crowning the Silver-Bloods and still doing nothing about Maven, I'd go Stormcloak; but clearly whatever the leaderships' motivations, they're no better at removing corruption than the Empire.)

I missed it if anyone else brought up the issue with the Reach before - I saw broad 'Ulfric's a racist!' comments, but I didn't notice anything that specifically alluded to his initiative to retake the Reach while the Empire was predisposed to just let things develop and accept a Reach province. AFAIK, you cannot pin too much of how the Dunmer are treated in Windhelm specifically on Ulfric (even if that is a bit suspicious), but you certainly can pay attention to what he did over in Markarth.

    * I lean towards powerlust more than impatience; either out of respect of the man, regret for how things happened with Torygg, or the difficulty in taking Whiterun, Ulfric clearly states that he expects Balgruuf to come around, and doesn't want to attack Whiterun initially.

  6. There's an unlock function and the ability to set lock levels via scripting on a magic effect. I've heard that by default, however, doors and containers don't get properly affected by magic, so you may have to create the spell as a self-buff that triggers on the player's next attempt to open a locked container.

    http://www.creationkit.com/Lock_-_ObjectReference

The See Also on that page should be useful to you.

  7. There are a few, though they're kind of annoying to use (including difficulty to get to wear upgrades that don't include armor).

Erandur at Dawnstar/Nightcaller Temple, J'zargo, Brelyna and Onmund at the College of Winterhold, and there's a few more scattered over Skyrim - but those are some of the easiest to get since they're near a major hold. Erandur's probably the single easiest and is one of the more interesting ones, to boot. Ultimate Follower Overhaul allows you to teach followers new spells, though be warned that custom spells from player mods won't work terribly well with that. (One reason why mine doesn't use the standard teaching system - harder to mix that up.)

  8. -headtilt-

That would... only be true if the only argument against Ulfric and the Stormcloaks was that he used the Voice against Torygg. There's a lot more weight on both sides than that. :| You're also relying on 'feelings' and speculation just as much to assume that the Empire is not merely biding its time to regain strength. There's more evidence in-game than not that the Empire's a bigger threat to the Aldmeri Dominion than a divided Empire and Skyrim, after all; the Thalmor consider Ulfric one of their most valuable unwilling assets. As people whose only vested interest in the conflict is how dangerous the end result is to their own prosperity, they're the single most reliable in-game source on this particular element of the matter.

  9. There's a difference between a duel out of tradition, and a war. Commentary from everyone, including Torygg - and note that being in Sovngarde tends to erase a lot of mortal-life grudges, like with Olaf and the bard - shows that it was unthinkable that he'd use the voice against someone who had no training in it in a duel. No one cares if you shout at bandits who are murdering people, on the other hand.
  10. Nope, cannot mod in realtime. Throw in the CK's long load process and that does really slow things down. Scripts can be edited on the fly, but will not respond to changes until you reload the game anyway. (If you're careful, you can edit some non-script elements directly through TESVSnip and do limited papyrus source editing/compiling without loading the mod, but you have to be very careful and keep back-ups and you won't be able to change everything - at least with an effective speed.)
  11. I should note that I haven't played Oblivion and barely played Morrowind - my opinions are formed entirely from playing Skyrim. I see: an Empire that made tactical mistakes and is weaker, but is still pretty much the only hope of surviving the Thalmor long-term. The collusion is pretty much the result of Ulfric playing right into the Thalmor's hands - remember that the Thalmor actually want him alive, because they find him useful to causing trouble and giving them excuses to ride the Empire hard.

Additionally, the worst thing that's happened to me from the Empire was - yeah, they tried to execute me because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Understandably a little upset about that, I think. On the other hand, the first thing I see out of Hadvar is trying to protect a little kid and saving my life first chance he got. I wasn't happy about the torturers in the basement, but they're dead now and Haddy didn't object.

And I don't know how anyone can think Ulfric's murder of Torygg proves any sort of moral rightness. It proves that a guy who studied with the Greybeards who was also a veteran warrior could outmatch a boy of a ruler in a fistfight that involves magic screaming. It might have been in broad daylight and not all that secret, but it was definitely sudden, he definitely knew he'd committed a crime since he went and ran instead of standing his ground and invoking Nord law, and it definitely had a political agenda. The fact that Ulfric even thought that was a good idea when multiple people commented that Torygg would probably have let him had his way if he'd -talked- things out instead? (Torygg -admired- Ulfric, remember?) That tells me that the Stormcloaks lack practice in thinking about tactics and strategy. The Empire failed out of a lack of aggression more than a lack of mind in the Great War, sure, but a bunch of people who think with their muscles aren't going to make anything better.

  12. Actually, I'm not looking at Stealth that way... I used Stealth extensively my previous playthrough, despite only dropping three or four perks in it. I just wanted to make sure that archers weren't in a position where they were crippled or unable to really use their power properly if they were in a position where they couldn't use Stealth.

I generally prefer to play characters to certain archetypes, is all, and I'm interested in playing the Movie Susan/Natalia Lanvaldear/Movie Legolas + a bit of magic thrown in at the moment. The Link style "I use every weapon when appropriate" is pretty cool too, but I want to save that for a later playthrough so that each character feels more distinct to me. Additionally, the small amount of hotkeys in Skyrim forces me to do this, in a way, since I prefer to pause as little as possible - the more hotkeys I'm spending on equipping different weapons, the fewer hotkeys I can spend on spells.

  13. Because to be more accurate, what I want isn't necessarily a player house - it's a player base of operations. I ended up using (of all things) Bathing Beauties for this, because I can make the NPCs dress not skimpy if I want to and people actually walk around and do things and have proper AI behaviors. So, what I want is not a cozy shack for one or two, nor a castle with a giant harem of Barbie Dolls who do not really move or interact with anything. Or a castle full of a spiky mannequins. I want something where the NPCs live and breathe. Are there any mods like that out there? I'm not even sure how to search for this. Something like... a player mansion where I could deposit a handful of NPCs including a spouse if I get one, and they actually do things.

BB works pretty well for me, actually, but if I can get what I want with a slightly less awkward-to-explain mod, that'd be great. XD

  14. Those shoes really bug me. They look like iron sandals with black socks, and that detracts from the totally awesome work you did on the straightleg portion.

A vote for minor or plain here, full just seems gaudy to me.

  15. Regarding multi-specialization, I prefer to have one weapon and get good at it per character. I like to travel light instead of having weapons all over my body. Also regarding ease, I just did most of the Main Quest on Master as a Resto spellsword without archery - it's quite doable, actually, but the release of horseback archery but no horseback casting, was a major motivator in me restarting.

I also enjoy stealth, I just hate when I have a character forced to use it constantly to do -everything-, because those types are invariably up a creek when they lose that advantage. I'm sold pretty well on archery right now, so I'm going to give a spellbow a try. I picked up one of the many explosive arrows mods, though this one only does explosive arrows, and they're pricey - no utility belt arrows, which always felt like they encroached on magic to me.

  16. Skyrim's best interest is the Empire, even though that's a good argument you put up there about the Empire needing to have pressed the advantage in that last war. Hammerfell held out against the Aldmeri in part because the Aldmeri had gotten quite beat-up, too. A Skyrim that's outright hostile to the Empire is going to just make both Skyrim and what remains of the Empire easier to destroy.

That said, I totally can't buy into any argument which has as a major premise that assassinating a king just because you can, makes you a good guy.

  17. I'm torn at the moment between a sword-and-board in Dwarven armor with Restoration back-up, or a light-armor wearing horseback archer with Restoration back-up. Is archery fulfilling to play even if you're not getting sneaky? Like, obviously it's always ideal to have distance from the enemy, but if I can't get the drop on someone, is it still going to be fun to play?
