Funny, I read each post, and somewhere around the middle, I got the idea that we could play as that child too. It would certainly feel more like Baldur's Gate, that's for sure. I'm having trouble imagining how it would be incorporated into the sequel. I think it would be easier to put it into an expansion, so the devs can make a seqel without worrying about possible plot holes. I just hope we don't get conclusion about it in a goddamn book. I love reading books, but this I want to play.
