I've got my Skyrim playthrough stable and have possibly 100 hours sunk into this playthrough, just to verify: it's working FINE and has been.
The whole AE update furor happened but it should not have affected me since my manifest is read-only and I've got the SkyrimSE.exe saved to the side in case I need to copy-paste it into the main directory again. Vortex updated recently but I don't know why that would make any difference.
Nonetheless, when I now try and run skyrim I get this error. Again, I have not changed ANYTHING. This is the same SKSE I've been running. After this popup, Vortex will tell me it can't find SkyrimSE.exe anytime I hit play, unless I completely restart the app.
What's happening?
-
The first screenshot shows that SkyrimSE.exe and SkyrimSLauncher.exe are in the file folder as expected.
The second is Vortex NOT seeing any files other than folders when I manually navigate there.
What's going on? -
SKyrimSELauncher.exe is sitting right in the game folder next to SkyrimSE.exe. The game itself doesn't launch instantly, it just immediately takes me to the vanilla start menu. If I double click the launcher exe it opens right up to the main game menu. Double clicking the plain SkyrimSE.exe also just opens the main menu box. I've been launching the game through Vortex this whole time though, once I got my mods set up.
When I go to the Vortex game menu to manually point it at the right exe, no exes show in the folder at all! It's just the folders without any of the ini, dll or exe!
-
Steam launches the game to the menu INSTANTLY. Still Vortex says the SkyrimSE.exe is missing.
@Showler, I download what it tells me to. It doesn't say I have any new updates since last night.

Vortex just updated and now when I try and run the game it says it can't find SkyrimSE.exe Literally nothing except the update has changed, I've been playing this loadout for the past 6 months or so. I was playing it last night at 1am for that matter, and now it says SkyrimSE is missing? I don't want to screw this up and lose my current playthrough. How do I fix this?

Thank you rmm200!

Very good method.
I do (strongly) recommend you zip up the download. Call it something like "Skyrim Downgrade.zip".
Drag it to Vortex as a mod. Change Mod Type to "Engine Injector" to get it loaded into the Skyrim directory.
Enable and Deploy. Now you are downgraded, with the ability to go current again just by disabling the mod and Deploying.
And your game directory remains pristine.
How do I change the mod type? I don't see an option for that.

Vortex doesn't update your game, that's entirely up to Steam
It is, though. I've replaced my exe in the installation of Skyrim with the last AE (per Contrabiscuit's instructions from reddit, above.) It runs when I do that. But if I close Vortex and re-open it, Vortex says my game is updated and I have to copy the correct exe again. I never ever run the game through steam, only through Vortex.

Hey, I installed a Skyrim collection, but couldn't start the game with SKSE. I found this on Reddit and it worked for me...
From ContraBiscuits on Reddit:
Skyrim updated to 1.6.629 SKSE won't launch the game right now.Anyone that wants to downgrade back to AE from a few hours ago (1.6.353):First type this into your web browser:steam://nav/consoleThen allow it to open steam client bootstrapper. Once the console window appears, type:download_depot 489830 489833 4570833277049890269Depot download complete : "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_489830\depot_489833" (1 files, manifest 4570833277049890269)Check the console for the location of the newly downloaded skyrimse.exe version 1.6.353. Then simply replace the exe in your game files with this one. Don't know how well this will work but the game is at least launching for me so...That's what I've done, but every time I open Vortex it updates the game again!
-
I've got Skyrim set to not update in steam, assuming that Vortex is launching through SKSE (since SKSE is working when I play) but Vortex keeps updating Skyrim all on its own.
Where is the option for Vortex to NOT update Skyrim? I don't want to have to roll back every time I want to play.
-
What do you mean "install the rollback as a mod?"
I've been able to roll back the game and play, but Vortex insists on updating Skyrim again and f*#@ing up SKSE
-
Of course Skyrim decided to fix bugs today in an 11 year old game (lol why) ansd now SKSE doesn't work and I'm worried about my mod list breaking when SKSE updates. I've seen a lot of instructions on how to roll back, but I'm worried that it will screw up Vortex and my current playthrough if I do.
Does anyone have instructions that will work with Vortex for sure?
Skyrim: SaveGameInactiveContent error
in Skyrim SE
Posted
Using the latest (12/19/2023) version of Vortex. Using JaySerpa's Gate to Sovengard collection. Using the Steam version of Skyrim, version 1.6.1170.0
IMPORTANT: I have not installed or uninstalled ANY mods since I got the collection up and running. No changes were made between one day and the next.
My current save has at least 100 hours on it, I'd never change my mod loadout in the middle of a playthrough.
I am in the Soul Cairn at the moment. I made a fresh save (I always make one before I log out) and when I went to log in a couple hours later, I got this error. In the box, it says "SaveGameInactiveContent / fwmf for fantasy paper maps.esp / SaveGameMissingContentActivate." Again, NO changes were made to my mods or plugins.
I've checked the plugins page and that ESP is active and enabled.
I re-installed (from vortex) Flat World Map Framework FOMOD Lite, which is the mod attached to that plugin.
If I choose the "load anyway" button, the game crashes. If I try to start a new game, it ctd.
I have not loaded the game through Steam. I have not updated the game. I have restarted Vortex, re-deployed mods, re-sorted plugins and restarted my computer. Nothing works.
