Steam and Bethesda remove paid modding from Skyrim Workshop

In response to post #24774429. #24774804, #24775194, #24775494, #24775709, #24775744, #24775854, #24776394 are all replies on the same post. How about an endorsement system for helpful and productive users/aspiring mod creators? EDIT: Some excellent ideas btw. Although not a fan of excluding people or copying phone apps. Think its really important to make us all feel we can contribute, and reap "rewards". Not sure Nexus themselves paying modders will work though. -

I think this is all ultimately Bethesda's decision to make. Nexus are kinda victims of their own success. -
I completely agree that time is needed and I by no way was implying to inject it into the community (especially right now! :D) It's just I have been following many discussions over the past couple of days trying to play neutral and challenging some of the rhetoric. I was trying to think of a way to reward collaboration and give people a stronger feeling that they can contribute. Both between "authors" and "users". The endorsement system and donation system tend to work for the most part for authors but there is little to reward anyone else. That is why perhaps people can EARN higher states of membership like Supporter... an endorsement system for helpful and contributive "users", for example. Just a thought.

In response to post #24765249. #24769894, #24770539 are all replies on the same post. May I point out the the law is different around the world. -
Personally I am not bothered what I am called as I never got into this so as to call myself anything. I agree this probably wasn't a major issue really till this "paygate" fiasco. In many ways there is a similarity between the potential relationship now forming between "users" and "authors" on the nexus forums and the relationship between Nexus itself and Bethesda/Valve. EDIT: May I also point out that the label "Supporter" is only acquired through financial contribution. SECOND EDIT: I have myself created a few personalised plugins and *hacks* in order to improve the stability and functionality of my games, even written a few amateurish tweak guides in my time, not only for Bethesda games but for old retro games and emulators too. But I do not feel I can carry the wait of calling myself an Author or carry the same clout as the "big players". Am I just a user? Sometimes people overestimate their work, sometimes the opposite.
-
@bben46 Totally understand it wouldn't happen over night and perhaps could adopt a top down approach. Choosing a label, well that's why I wanted to open the dialogue @McclaudEagle Yeah I know it is the minority but many people paint everyone with the same brush, authors and users alike. Also when can someone be an author? I have heard some pretty sweeping statements and generalisations from people who claim to be "authors" but have very little to no content, yet they talk as if they were a guru of the whole community. EDIT: sorry about spelling mistakes =/

"Users" have been called just as nasty things, parasites, screaming kids, idiots, useless, pieces of ****, good for nothing, losers, trolls... the list goes on, this is perhaps not the best way to gain new customers.

Well from what I've seen the past two days it looks like there is a real rift appearing, so I guess I would say I see your point but do not totally agree with it. Suppose that is why it's important to have these discussions.

In response to post #24765204. #24765939 is also a reply to the same post. "hypothetical migration of the mods to a payment system" Um... it did actually happen, even if it was only a test run. Some people do actually find modding fun. I'm just saying that, cuz I do. I'm probably no where near as skilled as that long list of people in the other post, but I try and I have great deal of commitments in my life... house, partner, business etc... This is my hobby. One day I may very well get good enough to make something worthwhile releasing but not if everything becomes highly exclusive. -
Then one needs to police the posts, and people should have a choice and and chance to give their opinion. If its disagreed with then that opens discussion which may help either side think of things in a different light. If I have learnt anything this weekend it would be that.
-
Perhaps having three "tiers" then? Contribute enough and you become a "Contributor". I mod a lot and mess around with everything I can manage and have the time and skill to do, but I do not consider myself an "author", nor do I like the connotations many people apply to the word "user" I do not just use mods with no regard for what goes into them, even if there is a minority who do. One does not become an author overnight Do authors not use tools to create their mods? And I can believe some more casual authors do actually use other people's mods in their games when they play them.

I've been casually modding since it came out. In fact I nearly went crazy many times, but damn am I looking forward to playing it one day. Just fingers crossed my save doesn't get messed up. Riften I'm looking at you!!! :D -
My point is not every "user" just uses and disposes of mods like a hungry caterpillar, which many people seem to be suggesting.

I just want to bring to attention the trend I have noticed the past weekend and what has divided the community. I feel it comes down to the fact that there is a view that there are mod creators and then there are.... USERS! Now while I agree that some people just consume without regard, but then equally some create and never really play the game much and "use" mods. My point is it is all more complex than this and perhaps we could find a way of relabelling the "user" in a more broader and considered sense. EDIT: I think many fall in between the two. It is a hobby, we play, we experiment with modding our games and we offer help and support to both "parties" whenever we can. Suggestions: Member Contributor Promoter Sponsor Donator Just a few. What does everyone think?

In response to post #24761834. This is why it is also about our experience of art... and we should be careful we don't buy into buying "art" for art's sake. That is to say art is a very subjective thing to experience and why our relationship with it matters. I buy Bethesda games because they enrich my life, not just cuz they are sold as such -

In response to post #24761154. Only if there remained a choice to have a mixture of both and proper quality checks and regulations were implemented, yes a lot of us already "pay for mods" (or rather modding in general) and probably would be able to see how it could have a future. EDIT: But a lot of people might also demand better functioning, less buggy tools and products from Bethesda themselves. -

In response to post #24760004. #24760284, #24760374 are all replies on the same post. Making money is one thing, making mods is another. I think it can be easy to miss because it is not overly obvious but the reason why many people get angry when someone who might be new to mod creation (like myself) goes and tries passing of a armour retexture at 2.99 is forgetting that it is only as "easy" as it is to do because of years and years of hard work by hundreds of thousands of people. From software like Bodyslide, SKSE, ENB to tutorials, bug testing and months of trial and error should not just be taken for granted. Most of these people, who may have long left the modding seen were never paid. So it's a bit ripe when people try to argue that regulation and quality control don't seem to matter. There are mods out there, totally worth it (and they maybe relatively small, like Footprints) that certainly warrant considering promoting to a paid system. But it cannot and should not just be a free for all cash cow. -

In response to post #24757114. #24758379, #24758824, #24759019 are all replies on the same post. This is why paying for mods is such a volatile area as Bethesda and Valve have no real way of regulating this. The thing with how they have laid it out in their EULA means that a blind eye is turned because the companies are still making profits. Get money involved and lawyers will surely follow. -
Yes! This would stop the problem of paypal flagging up multiple "micro-transactions" if you want to donate to a few authors in succession.
