The problem with the particular model that was tested on us over weekend was that it made modding very expensive for new modders who maybe using completely new sdk and game engines.

I think part of the problem has been the lack of prominence of the Donate button. This has had to be done on purpose I gather as this is the legal grey area Nexus has been dancing for a while now. Before this all happened of course :P EDIT: This is why we should perhaps try view this as paying for modding, not necessarily for mods...

I think it has been an awakening of a relationship that had perhaps become a little taken for granted. And I think that is true for the entire community, including the developers and publishers. This is the internet guys, this has been looked at the world over.
  6. Hello, Hope this is the correct place to post. Was told I should post a suggestion. Could I just ask that we find a donation system that allows me to donate to multiple people on the same screen? Download history perhaps? Then someone added that this could be incorporated into the NMM too. Thank you for all you do. Kind Regards, SNB

Communities should always contain a wide variety of people. I have come to realise just how varied opinions are on in this community and the number of times I have thought "s#*! that's a insanely good point". I think it is the sense of community that was what caused such a strong reaction from everyone here. I think what Bethesda (perhaps Valve) and everyone here found out through this is how intricate and precious this wide variety of people and how they interact is. You cannot package it in a box and sell it for the lowest price. We should be proud of that and I hope Bethesda and everyone here appreciates the value of it.
  8. All I can say is phew! My life can continue... Thank you all for keeping my faith in humanity. Thanks Dark0ne. P.S. Could I just ask that we find a donation system that allows me to donate to multiple people on the same screen? Download history perhaps?
  9. In response to post #24732189. #24732364 is also a reply to the same post. I think that's why it should be optional because let's not forget that a "user" or "tester" might WANT to pay a modder. Let us also not forget that a "modder" might want to donate to a "tester" or a moderator to a "troll", or between friends, or even Dark0ne donating to himself for that matter. EDIT: Hell I might even continue to donate to Bethesda and Valve if they don't try pulling a stunt quite like this one again! :D
  10. In response to post #24730754. #24730929, #24731149, #24732569 are all replies on the same post. @ popopipo Kudos for you sir!
  11. In response to post #24731409. #24731549, #24731554, #24731689 are all replies on the same post. I think one of the major issues surrounding all this was the way it was implemented. How about a mature thought out inquiry and discussion between developers, modders, contributors and users/testers would have possibly avoided this whole sham. It is because of how this was done that my respect for Beth and Valve has been damaged and it is only with time and future experiences that this may improve. Let us not forget that Nexus supports all games now. There will always be new developers.
  12. In response to post #24730204. #24730439, #24730704, #24730979 are all replies on the same post. I still think a more comprehensive approach is needed, like a combination of donate, most downloaded and a monitored quality and copyright check simply has to be part of any future implementation of the scheme.
  13. In response to post #24730204. I think you are right, I only hope they loosen up on the donation thing to allow Dark0ne to let modders push forward on the donation option without fear of breaking the law.

Devaluing their own products could very well spell doom if they don't pull their finger out and release games that actually run. A few may slave away but many will think "hang on why am I doing Beth's job for them?" Digital sweatshop is a perfect analogy for me and it really does bring in some legal questions I think. The other point about what the whole community brings also strikes a cord with me as the whole is always stronger than the individual. Another part of this is the middle-man job Nexus has played up until now, between newbies and gurus such as yourself. The reason this is so important is that Nexus has acted as a massive PR and customer support team for Beth (and Valve in many cases) and we have by and large held high regard and respect for the developer so can justify the sometimes endless, sometimes repetitive support that comes with such a fastly evolving game such as Skyrim. We have always maintained a certain regard that Beth may have released a buggy game but bless... it must be hard and we take the benefit of the doubt that they tried... so we try. This has all altered that equation completely. A final point I have is that if we look at other industries, money by and large stifles creativity. Look at the swathe or regurgitated movie ideas and sequels/spin offs, or X Factor and all that malarkey.

They are being forced into accepting new rules that they had no voice in making. I completely understand that some things are inevitable but not enough value is given to HOW you do things in the corporate world today. Just make as much money as you as quickly as you can. There are a few exceptions thank goodness, but you do tend to find these are the smaller, more independent companies.
  17. In response to post #24710379. #24724494 is also a reply to the same post. When I go to to buy food and pay for it, I eat it... End of commitment to the store. I do not buy potatoes and then pay rent on them. I may however give a donation to my partner who made our dinner with them though. This works because I go back to the store as I am not being drained for all I'm worth... well it hasn't got that bad yet, except of course as society as a whole with the exponential need of food banks and soup kitchens. Food BANKS... wow man what a dangerous idea.

I see the point about some people perhaps deserving it, death threats and what not, but some of these people are angry with good reason, and they may just use hyperbole (ever listened to people on the CoD servers. its endemic). It also kinda reinforces the message of "if we don't like you we will kill (ban) you" It might be better to just delete posts or suspend rather than ban people as that sends out the wrong message to more polite members as a sort of closed door, which just aggravates more people and makes the company more and more faceless. Not good for PR. I've never moderated a board before so do unfortunately do not speak from experience.

Just found this on the forum -QUOTE- 25% goes to the 'Unofficial Content Developer' (UCD) as the Developer. A variable amount up to 30% of UCD's share goes to the 'Internal Revenue Service' of the 'United States Federal Government' as Taxation. -END QUOTE- Link: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/2793044-paid-mods-for-skyrim-workshop-on-steam/page-27#entry24680649 This means as a modder you are unofficially employed in the country you live but are paying into the USA tax system. This sound like a legal and political minefield to anyone else?
  20. Looks like the Bethesda moderators could do with reading the S.T.E.P. guide. It almost funny to watch them scramble around... if only it were not for unknowing new comers who are being shafted. Disgusting.

  22. Just been hanging out in the Steam forums, which I never normally do, and it's a s***storm in there... Refunds get you banned apparently!! Chase the money ha ha ha *nom* *nom* *nom* What an absolute shambles! EDIT: Then went to the Beth forums and the aggression from the moderators their is awful. Real problem is that these are paying customers and they are being locked out just for asking questions on something that has been forced upon them.
  23. In response to post #24714709. Don't be fooled by PR... They will only budge if it benefits them. That is why the communities must stand together and demand better rights. Petitions are an excellent way to do this but not the only way. Good to know we may at least be able to twist his arm, which in turn may twist Bethesda into a more thought out scheme and not this cash cow they are chasing. That is probably the most immediate problem that I see, Valvethesda get cold hard cash, modders... Oh cheers, coupons!
