In response to post #24688489. The compensation will be going to (mostly) the wrong people. What Pay Mods will do is give the wrong incentive for future modders... modders who do not know and are not part of the long history of game devlopment and pushing the boundaries. If it all goes pear shaped it will bite Valvesda in the ass. Shame is it will also hurt the "ethical" gamers out there. That being said there will always be new games and new platforms.

No disrespect at all but I do actually have a small business. I do conceed the point that I am perhaps naive becasue its not a big one and I don't make a lot of money. And personally I don't want to because I know how worthless money is. I work many days for zip, nada! I like to imagine in the golden age it might have been like that for Bethesda (and Valve) the pinoeering renagades makeing games in a basement with a cobbled together bit of kit. But, and I hope it never happens to me, they seem to have lost their moral compass here. I have read your posts over the last few days and I too try to fight the machine but its very tiring and hard. And everyday they chip away. Suppose there will always be new developers, which is one thing that I feel a little hope over.

I've seen the problems that Dark0ne and the team has faced over the past few years... Valvesda seem to have no idea what they are letting themselves in for. It's about respect and there seems to be less and less of that around these days.

I had not thought about it that way... Perhaps this is a naive question but did Bethesda contact any of the most legendary modders to tell them this was gonna happen? I mean out of respect for the endless content, ideas and bug fixes they have given them over the years? If not then... well I am a little lost for words and again feel really quite sad about all this.

In response to post #24684729. Thank you Harbringe, that is one of the most interesting and insightful posts I have read the past two days. I did know a little about the game history but this part of the whole story of Bethesda and its community is an important story to tell, for all the "spoilt brats" out there and... well Bethesda themselves really. Hmmm.. the whole things makes me feel sad. Hope things can be made to work better without sacraficing what people like you have brought to my life and many others. My hat off to you and all great modding gurus out there. I really hope you get the credit you deserve, both financially and otherwise. Thank you.

In response to post #24683029. I hear you on the corporation thing but my gripe is that aren't some of the best games developers from modding communities themselves? So have they just lost all their values and replaced it with cash?? I just find this hard to come to terms with, I mean isn't this community a living breathing example of what we can achieve when we work together for the profit of our games not pockets. So why are Beth being such a holes about on this??

In response to post #24682284. Good points. What I am trying to find out is where the morality, the respect in all of this. I asked a question earlier but I think it got lost among the longer posts. When the first Beth sdk was released was it just a big TOC or was there a friendly dialouge between the developer and community? My reason for asking is becasue the way that the pay for mods has been rolled out is very cruel to the authors who made them because they made them out of the good will and love of games, with I imagine the blessing of Beth... I mean they have had some 10 years to take legal action. My point is that this is a nasty way to intrduce their customers to the developing world of digital copyright. Why is there no communication from them? Why not talk to their audiences like adults as let's face it, most of us saw something like this was inevitable. But why oh why so aggressively? Or just plain clumsy??

I was not there in the early early days but how was the idea of modding Beth games originally conveyed way back when? Was it a case of: A) um... we have for some reason released this sdk for our games, I wonder if anyone will use it? B) Hey guys you like our games? Would you like our sdk to try out some cool sh*t? C) Whoa! How the hell did they get hols of our sdk?? We'll make you pay... oh yes we will make you pay... I ask as I genuinely don't know.

In response to post #24679034. 1. There are things that can be done as a community (who buy Beth products) to change things for the better 2. If you couldn't give less a s**t about this then why make such a comment? You are of course entitled to say what you like but why put down people who are trying to fight for modders and mod user protection.

In response to post #24677024. My personal take is that Valve gave them a offer they couldn't refuse... i.e. join us or we will crush you. Some people are (justifiably) angry and scared because they feel this means an inevitable slope towards the end of free modding and its communities. Others see this as something that was really unavoidable but hope that with solidarity and a clear message we can demand our own terms as users/modders. Some think its too late and have given up. A few think this the best thing to happen to the community. They are of course in the minority :P

In response to post #24676199. I'm taking bets this would never have been made public if it were not for the s**tstorm happening right now. Give yourselves a high five guys for the power and voice of the users! Proof that these communities really are strongest when they stand together. Now lets make them address the rest of everyones concerns.

In response to post #24672854. #24672944, #24675669 are all replies on the same post. I am planning to do just this... what would be nice though is to perhaps have a few features such as a blanket donation say 20p to all endorsed mods. And perhaps even a more dedicated donation system where I do not have to go to each page and go through the whole process 150 times! Tick box your top ten and give them 2.99 or something.
