To any who may also be stuck in here: just explore all the areas you can find; hit all the buttons. There are rooms not indicated as relevant by your map arrow, but which are integral to finding your way through. This has always been one of the more challenging quests for me, but the "sprawl" of the quest path adds a depth many lack.

Thank you, Bben for the very thorough bunch of suggestions. Re: the Crash On Levelling problem- I'm running Win7, and the filepath you describe IS the correct one. Thanks again, because it could not be found via direct access to the data folder (unlike good ol' "simple" Morrowind.) I followed the recommendation, and still had the same crash issue. I subsequently began a systematic run-thru of unplugging & replugging mods, and found that turning off a dark seducer armor mod seemed to do the trick. I can only guess that it was a discrepancy with the mod being sourced from the SI expansion, which I do not have. The mod purportedly did not require SI, but sometimes you just never know.
