Hum, it sounds as though you're running tesv.exe instead of steam. can't think of anything else.

OK. No idea then, I'm afraid. Note that I'm running via PlayOnLinux, not bare-bones wine. Perhaps it is the wine version you're using (very wild guess)?

Personally, I can't get any mod manager to work reliably. MO crashes 2 out of 3 times, so I only use it to extract mods with optional components, such as ETaC or XPMSE. For the rest, I do mod installation manually. Hum, no idea what's wrong there. I have Legendary and it all works just fine. Again, dunno what's wrong there. I am assuming you're using a purchased copy of the game... ?

Why a VM? Run Windows Explorer from Wine/PlayOnLinux, and use that to copy. Also, directory names don't need to all start with a capital, Windows doesn't care. But they must be consistant, that yes. So you can't have Textures and textures, for example, but you can have textures and Meshes.

Ah, well done! I never managed to get it to work, not even using manaul download of the installer. But I've gotten used to doing without, now. :-)

It occurred to me just now, after months of play, that the Dovahkiin is incredibly ungrateful! Help comes from so many, but in no place (that I have seen) is the Dovahkiin ever given the opportunity to say "thank you". Granted, the Dovahkiin does help others - tons of quests are all about that. But when getting help ... like how about a word of thanks to the Greybeards for their patience in teaching how to use words of power? A reply isn't even needed. Sure it would be nice, but that would entail messy stuff with voice. Or Fuz Ro D-oh - Silent Voice. A head bow perhaps? But not even that is required. It just seems, given how many are keen on making the game more immersive, that this has been overlooked. (OK, I haven't seen anything that does it.) Related: getting a follower: "Follow me. I need your help." That's it? No "Please"? Or "if it isn't your laundry day...." ;-) And here too, the follower fights by your side, and you never can say "thank you". Silly request? Perhaps. But frankly, I've had many occasions when I've wanted to express gratitude - especially to Paarthurnax. ;-) Thanks for reading.

Thanks for adding your experiences. :-) I haven't tried anything related to ENB; I figured that would be pushing wine a tad too hard. As for Loot, I did try that a while back and it worked. But I prefer to set sort order manually, and then I run everything through TES5Edit. Not the best approach I guess, but I am a bit OCD when it comes to keeping things arranged in a way that makes sense to me. ;-)

Thanks for the input - very helpful! That said, after having reinstalled from scratch 5-6 times, I don't plan on doing it again unless I *have* to. ;) Steam/Skyrim won't run on vanilla 1.7.34, not for me anyway, as I noted in my previous post. I run it - and everything else - on 1.7.36 As an aside, I found that when running Skyrim for the first time, it installs its own libs. In order: - Directx9 - DotNet35 - VisualC Redist Which is an odd order since DirectX will fail to install because it needs DotNet35 installed - yet the installer runs after this. I "solved" that by manually running Skyrim's DotNet installer manually. Going further on a tangent, Skyrim utils that work/don't work for me: - Creation Kit: very flaky, prone to crashing or freezing (but apparently it is as flaky in Windows). - Nexus Mod Manager: don't work - Wyre Bash: doesn't work - Mod Manager: crashes at start 75% of the time. (*) - Tes5Edit: works fine - Save Game Cleaner: Works (*) I don't use Mod Manager to handle mods, nor as a skyrim loader. I found it too late and so install most things manually. But it is handy for dealing with those mods that have many optional parts, such as XP32 Maximum Skeleton, for example.

FWIW, looks like a recent Steam update broke the game on POL: http://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-12878-Skyrim__Failure_to_Launch.html Which may explain why I had it working fine in the afternoon, and then having it refuse to even start after dinner. [sigh] After trying several reinstalls, I ran it in debug and got: err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7bcbc3c4 "loader.c: loader_section" wait timed out in thread 007f, blocked by 007b, retrying (60 sec) Searching on that, led me to the thread posted above. So now I'm installing wine 1.7.36, and we'll see. ETA: 1.7.36 got me started; it fixed the issue noted above.

OK, I'm calling it quits after the 5th complete reinstall. Skyrim never shuts down normally and I guess force quitting breaks stuff sometimes, which damages the game. Not worth the hastle. At least I finished the main quest once. It was fun, but back to my normal life. Good luck!

The first thing I found was this post: http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-guide.331/ I installed the libs it says there. I discovered your post some time after, and installed the additional libs you list. I also needed .NET 2.0 to get DirectX to install.

Uhm, I followed the steps in your initial post - only change I made was repalcing scrrun.dll I run FNIS from PlayOnLinux: manually at first, then I made a shortcut for it. That's it really.
