Ran into this myself. I had iHUD installed, so I uninstalled/reinstalled/uninstalled it again, thinking it might be the issue. No joy. So I uninstalled iHUD and set this line in SkyrimPrefs.ini: [interface] bShowCompass=1 (it had been set to =0) But that didn't fix it for me either. So I deleted my iHUD completely and re-downloaded/re-installed it from here on the Nexus: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/3222 Leaving bShowCompass=1 in place, I used NMM to set the option to always show compass (same as it had been before it broke) and installed it again. THEN it started working for me. Not sure why that fixed it, or for that matter, why it broke to begin with. My iHUD was up to date and had been working - so it's not like I replaced it with a different version. I can't even say it was directly related to the 1.6 patch, but the timing is about right for when mine disappeared. I'm also sure some of my steps were useless and/or redundant. But I don't know which ones because I wasn't trying to chase down a professional troubleshooting issue in a test environment :) I just wanted it fixed and now (for me anyway) it is. Good luck!
