Alistair rant....
MagdalenaDwojniak replied to LadyHonor's topic in Dragon Age: Origins's Discussion
Ha! Alice can be incredibly whiny, true. I wonder if it is to let your Warden come across as more mature? At any rate, yeah, if you want the templars, then Alice will complain. The only "good" version is if you listen closely, heed the information the demon is contained, but not blindly trust your or your other mages' abilities, instead deciding to run for Kinloch Hold and get the band of professionals, so to speak. I prefer this option, though not to remain in his good graces. I can be friends with him without abandoning my own brain (I hope he values that in the friendship). And yes, he really ought to broaden his horizons. Sometimes I wonder who of the other companions completely does not rub him in the wrong way. The mabari? Riiight, up to the cannibalism talk... Then the dog is offended . -
New Follower Preferences

I prefer more control. I would give some XP to level the abilities the way the player wants (unless there is some plot reason for your follower to have - or not - certain skills, cue Oghren and being a berserker or Leliana's lessons of archery with Marjolaine). But it is your decision. -
But isn't that sort of meta-knowledge exactly what a [spoilers] forum exists to discuss? I am referring to meta-knowledge of our awareness of the hiccups of Tranquility in a thread regarding a literary work, in other words, what you are saying applies, but the characters involved do not know it all ;). To repeat it: we know the intricacies of the Tranquility business. We have access to Gaider's posts, books, blog. We know the codex entries err. The characters are bereft of this all. They know the templars and the Chantry are the ones governing the whole thing, that it turns people capable of dreaming into emotionless shells, and that mages fear it. As a writer, I have to differentiate between research I do and what I can "tell" my characters. I must think the way they think, with the given knowledge and emotional luggage, and react accordingly. We were not discussing what Loghain deserves and should undergo. We were talking about what could be the most beneficial solution to those who judge him given their understanding of the situation. As a writer, I also have to care for the story's tension. The discussion is simply no longer needed here in my humble opinion. I got to a solution I will pursue. Naturally, the posts could be transplanted elsewhere where the interested parties could easily find it. Rosvita, I really do not believe my statements are "absurd". I created the thread to brainstorm my options for the work, I got what I needed. Why should I continue with it, and how? It would be saddening if you took good intentions in a different way, but I doubt it is the case. You are an adult woman. Your posts led me astray regarding your duration of learning the language, but a neutral subject could have possibly been given much thought. If you have been learning for a long time, it is fine. If not, also fine. I now know not to step in your defense when there are cross-language misunderstandings.

Not the first and not the last jarring error in localised versions of DAO (and its successors)... So, how will it be with closing the thread and proverbially going somewhere nice to constructively complain about inefficient translations to move on, guys :)? Because the whole discussion I have seen on the last pages pretty much stems from the pitiable fact. And the need to differentiate meta knowledge from character knowledge (like Anne said, what the writer knows is not what the GW knows).

Thandal, please, if you are so kind, close the thread on this message. It is getting off-topic and I hardly appreciate slander of my insignificant person. No idea how it still continues since I have already found my solution and explicitly stated so. Being accused of malice while doing nothing wrong is just beyond my comprehension. Insinuations and concepts about who I am are pointless, unjustified and plain fallacious. I fail to understand why Rosvita acts this way. I got the impression of learning English from the posts. I have no intention to categorise or assess anyone's skills (however, I cannot agree with right being a relatively modern word as it is used in Old English, the concept being older than dirt, sooo...). I never judge people's work without having thoroughly examined them, so I am leaving this open. I have, regrettably, read many translations made by people with their proficiency level not fit for translating yet, and it did not prevented them from, let's say, issuing derivatives. I am not saying Rosvita is the case, but I still stand by the opinion my defense of her is justified. I am saddened if she misunderstood my excuse for her and felt... I don't know - threatened? Why? It sounds weird. What I know is I do not appreciate Rosvita involving Anne and I will not pretend she is not my friend. It is nothing to be ashamed of (quite the contrary). Please leave her out of this. I could once again explain the difference between the author and character knowledge in regard to the oddly-worded question of Rosvita's regarding making one Tranquil, but Rosvita has a very established opinion and I have already found the solution to my predicament, so it appears as kind of pointless to me. At any rate, my thread could have been closed months ago and to prevent further derailing, I am kindly asking for it to be locked on this post. Thank you in advance.

Obviously, it is, since it is how the Seekers of Truth are created, but it is not common knowledge. Regardless, I have already picked a solution to my work, so the entire discussion is pretty void :ermm:... Why are you guys still replying? It doesn't get much more authoritative than that! The "Rite of Tranquility", on the other hand, the removal of the ability to manipulate the Fade (and incidentally, of the ability to feel any emotions at all) is at least somewhat reversible. How completely and successfully is unclear. Although it is obviously highly successful in certain specific cases (see "Seekers".) BTW: "rite" means a ritual or ceremony, and "right" means the moral or legal entitlement to have or obtain something or to act in a certain way. So it's "Right of Annulment", but it's "Rite of Tranquility". Ditto. From what I gather Rosvita is just starting to learn English, it isn't her first language, so it's excusable. Good you highlighted it for her though. I bet she appreciates all help! Ditto again. You could not have possibly been clearer. Kudos, Anne . * * * Now, shall we refrain from performing Ashk-Ente on me ?

they got it wrong...
MagdalenaDwojniak replied to LadyHonor's topic in Dragon Age: Origins's Discussion
Actually, continental climate features such differences (not touching Morrigan's taste in clothing since I roll with Anne's headcanon here). What we can assume IF Earth's geography is reflected by Thedas is that the entire known area, Seheron and Par Vollen included, are in the southern hemisphere. The biggest problem with DAO is that the devs did not include dynamic weather. And so it looks like nothing changes in spite of the fact the game is supposed to begin in 9:30 Dragon and end in 9:31 Dragon. They just use altitude to give you the snowy texture. There is not even a bit of snowfall (if games from the nineties can pull it off, I wonder why DAO cannot). I always explained the walking paradigm by "We Are Hunted and Poor So We Cannot Buy a Mule/Donkey/Horse/Meganug". Mechanics-wise, it is just BioWare not bothering with mounts (they did in DAI and we all know the riding memes). If the game had freezing mechanics, Morgue would be in trouble. But it doesn't. -

I have no desire to sound grumpy or anything, but I stand with Anne. Too many cooks spoilt the broth, yes, but there is nothing as great as more than one writer. It is comparing apples to oranges. You need to get a perfect team, not any quantity. I am talking from my experiences alone, but just read enough and you will see the pattern. It is crucial to have someone of your trade who thinks in a certain way to find issues and brainstorm. On top of thay, collaborative writing if you get a good partner is much more time-efficient. Not to mention inspirational. Also, writing a novel or a story is NOT like writing for a game. You need a lot more to make a written work shine. Heck, be bearable at all! The reason for how books written after games tend to suck is that most people who write them have little to no experience of just working in letters. A summary? All this shows you are not a writer (and nobody blames you for that, but please do not assume being omniscient in this matter). The comment about how you need to be addicted and depressed to write well? Sorry :ermm:... Juvenile (sort of insulting too, but I want to offense to you). I just cannot agree with this. You need empathy, curiosity, good cognition with the ability to research your subject, a LOT of books read and flawless command of your language of choice, topped with a certain kind of sensitivity to words. Writing is... well, much more complicated than what you seem to believe. Design in games is not what you take it as. It is not just art. I would not say I DESIGNED any RPGs despite creating at least five systems for friends. It is a different thing. You have to work with other employers too (most notably the "techies" and writers). Having acquaintances who work in game design, I wager a guess I have a very vague idea of the fact. Testing by yourself is not bad... unless you think this alone would suffice. It would not. You need many different machines and playstyles. The author of a work of art has too much meta knowledge to review it fairly. How often have I been faced with themes I had no idea they existed in my writing? Countless times. You need other people. Voicing. Let me tell you how horrible the Polish version of DAO is. Text boxes get tiring if you want much plot. It depends on the genre. One special case is Don't Starve (Together). Each character has a voice, but of a different instrument. The lines are customised too, but you never hear them spoken aloud. A human mind needs voice. The type is open for discussion though. Overall, that exchange was interesting to read. You are just twenty-five... When you get my age, you will look at what you wrote in a very different way ;). -

It usually feels like this if a sequel has less options than the first game. Players are easily to spoil ;). -
Um, Karma's Companions is a companion mod... and you have some additional origins... I would go check the installation and pick the right patch. EDIT: Ah. So now I see it's exactly what Anne suggested. Just stick with that every time you add a new companion or any mod and you should be fine.

MagdalenaDwojniak replied to Philogosten's topic in Dragon Age: Origins's Discussion
I'd vote for less flexibility in creating your character (particularly in DA2, though in DAI, the fact the only elf I can play is a Dalish effectively zoned me off into the land of the Tal-Vashoth Inkies... only to discover how few appearance options they have, and that hornless qunari are effectively banned altogether), but your proposition is much more amusing ;). -
When I realised how many links the reply would require, I freaked out and simply sent you a note. I hope it helps in your endeavours. About aesthetics... I'd quote that banter with Leliana: "You DO realise I lived in a forest?". Who knows what resources she could find. Notice the organic look of her default clothes. I would say the designers went for a mixture of practicality and "savage" looks.

It must be a companion mod. What additional companions do you have? It's an issue with the party picker.
-
Do you want vanilla equipment only? Minmaxing or more for immersion? I created a list of who wears what and why for my headcanon, I could dig it out, I suppose. Also, I actually find the lower half of Morrigan's gear rather sensible. Breeches to protect from cold and, pardon me, thorns in the backside, an overskort of leather tassels for added protection. It was not a sight that rare in the past. Especially in the army. Her upper half, however... Let's just say I put her into something else as soon as better stats can be obtained ;).
