[LE] Making Texture Sets Work With Weapons
skyler544 replied to skyler544's topic in Skyrim's Creation Kit and Modders
This was the issue. I had not created a "1stPerson" form for the weapons in my mod. Once that was done and the texture set was applied to the model in both the first and third person models (the "1stPerson" form and the "Weapon" form in the CK ), the texture set worked as expected. EDIT: Using texture sets is (in my opinion) much easier than using NifSkope for creating standalone items using vanilla meshes (or another mod if you're so inclined), even if it took me a few days of head scratching to figure out what I was doing wrong. Sometimes choosing the devil you know is the better option, but I forced myself to persevere so that I could continue the mod further than I might otherwise have been inclined to do when faced with a bunch of work in NifSkope. -
I've dabbled in modding and retexturing for a few years, but have never released a major project. I've decided that I will never release one if I don't learn some stuff first, which is why I'm here in this thread. The problem I'm having though is that I can follow this tutorial and get a texture set working for armor easily enough, but using a texture set for a weapon doesn't seem to work. I've looked for help in various places, Reddit, the official Nexus Discord, etc and have had no luck. So am I doing something wrong? My process consists of this: 1. Extract vanilla textures from the bsa 2. Using GIMP, modify the texture and export as dds with the default file options on compression and quality and so forth. I'm not entirely certain what the different types mean and the default has always worked for me with pure replacer textures. 3. Open the CK and duplicate a vanilla weapon by opening its form and changing the editor ID and saving as a new form. 4. Open any vanilla texture set and change its ID and the linked textures to those in question for the mod, keeping in mind which is the diffuse and which is the normal map etc. Save this as a new form. 5. Go back to the custom weapon and on the "Art and Sound" tab, click "edit" next to the model filepath box. 6. Apply the custom texture set to the weapon in the "Alternate Texture" part of the preview window. 7. Save esp and enable it in Mod Organizer with all requisite textures in the proper file structure to be read by the game. 8. Load game, and the texture set does not work (texture is still the vanilla texture).

I've often done simple retextures for my own use via Gimp. Today I decided I didn't want to look at the awful blue-gray vampire lord skin color anymore, and so easily fixed it. Then I decided it would be way better if the metal elements were silver rather than gold. Somehow I absolutely can't get that fixed and it's driving me insane. What gives? Anyone have any idea why extracting the dds file from the dawnguard HD.bsa and selecting the goldish color and desaturating it doesn't change anything? I've even gone into the mesh for the vampire lord with nifskope to check the texture and it is indeed using the extracted texture. WHYYYY?

This is probably my favorite character, but that could change at any time. I'm sure you all know how that goes. He's a Khajiit paladin, and I did my best to make him as a "Cathay-Raht," the large warrior breed of Khajiit. His name is Mordo Bardin (roll the Rs; I picture him as a suave and sophisticated knight with a vaguely exotic accent and the advantage of large whiskers), and he was born as one of a set of twins. His sister's name was Marda. Rather than just going with the regular Skyrim intro, I came up with some back story: One day the young twins were fishing in Lake Rumare when they spotted something glinting at the bottom. This was a shallow area with a slow current, and the lake bed was only a few meters down. Mordo dove into the clear waters and surfaced with a strange golden scroll. Upon opening it, his eyes were burned and his mind filled with terrible visions of the future, a doom that could only be averted if he claimed the Storm Crown of Talos (I always liked the term and decided that there should be an actual Storm Crown.). The scroll dissolved, and the now blind Mordo had to be guided by his sister. A few months later, after discovering the location of the crown, the twins infiltrated the White Gold Tower, narrowly escaping with the Storm Crown but becoming fugitives in the process. The Imperials finally caught up with them near Helgen however, and they executed Marda just before Alduin attacked. http://static-1.nexusmods.com/15/images/110/2199640-1416616255.jpg Here he is as an adult, after stopping the dragons and saving the world. I died the same moment that she did. Those monsters killed us both with a single swing of the axe. However, my body carried on, and somehow in that moment my sight returned, though my eyes were still blind. It was a different sort of sight, a sight that depended as much on hearing and smell as images. As children, I could always sense some of what she was thinking, though she could sense much more of my thoughts. We were often able to convey entire sentences with gestures or glances. A twitch of the ear told as much as an entire conversation. Because of this, when her life was ended, I felt the last of her spirit enter mine, and what was left of her returned my sight to me and gave me purpose. They would all die in exchange for her life. We never knew our birth day, though I would guess that at that time I was barely 15. Still, we Cathay-Raht are much larger than our brethren, and as adults tower over even the largest man. At 15 I was as large as any man there, though some of the elves were still larger. That did not matter however, as the rage and grief I knew then gave me the strength of a giant, and the arrival of the dragon focused everyone's attention. I snapped my bonds and leapt across the courtyard, snatching the Crown from the hands of that cursed one, Tullius. Carrying my momentum, I scooped up the body of my beloved sister, and with her over my shoulder and cradling her poor head in my arms, I fled through the west gate. In the days following her burial, I strove to form a plan. How could I ever overcome an entire army? My vengeance I swore, but grief blinded me. Instead of a plan I crafted a weapon, a sharp axe whose name was only natural. Marda would slay her foes even in death. I vividly remember every imperial whose life she ended, the looks on their faces, the screams and the flow of blood. Those were dark days for me, and though I helped end the civil war in Skyrim, I was never doing it for the cause. I did it only to get my revenge. The night we stormed Castle Dour is a surge of crimson in my mind; the crimson of the Legion, the crimson marring the flagstones in the streets, the crimson of Tullius' face as I choked the breath from his lungs, the crimson that covered me as I sunk her blade into his chest again and again. They tell me that I collapsed after that, though it took three men to extract her from his shattered corpse, so deeply had she sunk her fangs. As I washed the blood from my fur in the bleak dawn light, I knew that my vengeance was hollow. She would never be returned to me. I could only carry her memory, and the shame of the countless dead who paved the road behind me, their deaths unrelated to hers. That was the day I knew I was no longer a child, though scarce a year had passed. Many adventures I did then have, trying to forget the terror of my past. I heralded each new dawn as my last, though each dusk proved otherwise; my foes never enough to end my misery. The Storm Crown sat heavy on my brow while the growing darkness on the horizon gradually attracted my attention. I finally realized that while I wished to end my suffering, the suffering of others would not expedite my goal. I sought to end the threat of the dragons, to end the visions that cursed scroll had imparted to me that long ago day. The path was steep, but the smoke, smell of sulphur and a rumble as of distant thunder guided my steps. Throwing myself across a ravine, I caught a ledge and pulled myself up. Only 50 meters of sheer cliff between me and the top. As I scaled that wall, the rumble grew louder, the stench nearly unbearable. The very stones seemed warmed, and my adrenaline pushed me the final distance in half the time as before. My fingers caught the edge, and I pulled myself up. A burning orange eye the size of my entire face snapped open. A deep voice growled a single word: Fool. The dragon whipped its neck with blinding speed, slamming me against the cave wall and nearly pitching me back into the ravine. I shook the stars out of my eyes and charged, Marda's wicked edge high above my head. The fight was over far more quickly than I expected, because within the cave the dragon had become arrogant, thinking himself above the reach of any foes. The cave was too small for him to get his deadly maw in line with me, and Marda sank deeply into his neck again and again. The final bellows died away as the corpse began to smoke and burn. Thinking myself doomed to die from the release of the fires in his belly, I crouched down with my arms over my head behind a boulder, and yet all I felt was a strange warmth flowing into me. The long days of the dragon's life all flashed before my eyes, and without knowing why, I roared forth a strange word in a voice that was my own and yet so much more. FUS! I found my way up the 7,000 steps, the bitter cold and the bloodthirsty trolls only barring my progress momentarily. Such would not stop me, not after what I had seen and done. The tired old men in that temple gave me some good advice, though their ways would never suit me. I used what I could and trimmed away the excess, learning all I could of my new voice. I had my weapon. The knowledge that I could kill them, that I could truly stop the dragons, changed me yet again. I would fulfill the prophecy; I would ensure that Marda's death was not in vain. I knew then that vengeance was wrong, death was wrong, that only action would bring purpose. That only fulfilled purpose would bring meaning to my life. The fight itself means far less to me than the result; the assurance that the afterlife would remain unsullied, that the world would continue. And so suffice it to say that the fight was a success. But what of me? Barely 20, and now my purpose was again unknown. I heard the bellows of the giant, a sickening thud, a momentary scream and then was knocked backwards by something heavy, wet, and warm that had flown through the trees with great force. Fearing an attack from yet another troll, I was horrified to find I was fighting off the corpse of an Orc tribesmen, his chest brutally caved in. The giant had flung him right into me. Anger quickly filled me, and I charged into a clearing where a giant assaulted an Orc camp. I threw myself into the fray and sunk Marda deeply into the giant's hamstring. A giant on one knee presents its neck as a perfect target, and she kissed him there with enough force that I had a difficult time extricating her. The Orcs explained that their shrine to Malacath had been overrun by giants, and their leader enlisted me to help fight them. I followed, though found myself doing all the fighting. Finally, with the last giant's life blood leaking into the snow, I raised my shield barely in time to deflect a heavy blow from the Orc leader. Confused, I tried to reason with him, but heard a massive voice echo in my mind: Kill Him. Later that day, I knocked down a large tree with a single blow from the enormous hammer that Malacath had given me as a reward. I had a purpose once again. I would take the tools of these evil gods and use them to rid the world of as much evil as I could. As I lay here telling this story, those tools languish at the bottom of the Sea of Ghosts. I know that this is only temporary, but I can only hope they will not unleash evil on the world again anytime soon. I have done what I could, and though my deeds were many and did great good in the world, I look not to the past with my final hours as you have asked me, I look only to the world beyond, where we will fish on the banks of the lake as children again without interference from the gods or these so called Elders. I will be reunited with her at last. Bury me with her close to my heart.

these are excellent. I never even paid attention to those murals in vanilla specifically because nothing about them is detailed enough to catch the eye, save perhaps the one of potema. even that one is awful, and I can't wait to see how this turns out.

well, since nobody answered, I'll leave this here for anyone else that wants to know how to mute a custom cloak spell, the way I did it anyway: unpack your sound file from the relevant bsa, then open it with audacity and just delete the sound and overwrite. there's got to be a way to do in the CK I'm sure, but this is a brute force attack that works just fine.

As the title indicates, I'd like to be able to mute the sound effect of a cloak spell. Now, I know that there's already a mod or two that does just that (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/48893/?) but it only affects vanilla cloak spells and I can't seem to reverse engineer how the author did it so I can apply it to a modded cloak spell. Here's some context. I really like the mod Undeath; becoming a lich and such. I also really like the poison spells added by the mod, including the poison cloak which looks to me like a green version of the vanilla lightning cloak. The first person visual effects of the spell obscure the screen and sometimes even make me nauseous, but no big deal there as I was able to figure out how to disable that effect. However, the sound of the spell seems to be the same as the sound applied to the character when hit by frostbite venom or perhaps the vanilla frost cloak, and it's disproportionately loud and lasts for 60 seconds at a time or however long the duration of the spell is, which gets quite tedious. Now, I know how to use Audacity; I've even used it to replace a different annoying vanilla sound effect (wispmother breathing/tinkling) with blissful silence, but I don't know whether replacing the actual sound file from the bsa with silence is necessary in this case or not. I might go ahead and do it while waiting for an answer to this post, but it just seems to me like there should be something in the CK I can do to mute that irritating sound effect! tl;dr How do I mute that damn cloak spell in the CK?

thanks for the assist; I've uninstalled RLO, installed low res particles, and LOOTed. the results are not bad at all. I'm now speculating that the largest part of the problem was perhaps the way that RLO causes equipped magic to cast light, and that was the worst of the slowdown? anyway, I had the SKSE mem patch already as well as the grass decreaser, but lower res grass can only help with that. All in all, much better!

As the title states, I'm having severe lag with Magic; specifically, switching from spell to spell causes a "hang" in which the game is completely frozen or worse, just my character's hands are frozen for anywhere from a split second to 2-3 seconds. Occasionally this can last for up to 10 seconds. I have no idea what could be causing it; I have an intel Core 2 quad core CPU @ 2.83 GHz, 4gb ddr3 ram, GTX 570 with 1280 MB GDDR5, and a 5200 RPM 500gb Western Digital hard drive. I have used BOSS and and Wrye Bash. this is a new character and I parted with a load of mods before this new character in an attempt to alleviate this magic lag. My only suspicion is that it has something to do with "Equipping Overhaul," as in third person I sometimes note a "flicker" of the geared up weapons as if they're briefly unequipped then reequipped when switching from a weapon to magic. Other than that I don't know what could be causing this as I have great framerates at all other times (never below 50, generally 60), even when flying the Dev Aveza (great mod by the way, I highly recommend it to anyone with a stable game). Anyone who helps will forever be immortalized as the heir of Shalidor and mentor of magic users everywhere. Or just a really appreciated stranger. Something like that. Load order in spoiler tags

LE I seem to be the only one that gets annoyed by this, but....

perfect, I've been looking for this one for a while -
So, I've created a working custom follower with a face based on one of my characters, but the follower's face just doesn't seem to look the same as the PC; she has a strange underbite that isn't noticeable from the front, but looks like a witch when viewed in profile. In order to do this I used the console command spf and imported that facedata into the CK, did the color fix, and did everything else required to make the follower. She is in game and working, and doesn't look half bad, but I would still like to know if there was something I've done wrong that could be fixed before I upload my file to the nexus. The follower is a female Bosmer, and if you look at the screenshot, the follower version is on the left and the PC is on the right (The forums won't allow me to use the in-post image link for this, I don't know why). http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/Images/460585/? The mods I've used to get this effect: AOF Believable Hair - Male and Female CBBE LIFE - Lith Face Enhancement CBBE Natural Eyes HD Ethereal Elven Overhaul Installed in that order. Anyone have any suggestions as to why the NPC version's face looks so different?

now that I think about it I suppose that it being in the script makes a lot more sense. I don't know the first thing about papyrus or C++ however; I only have rudimentary knowledge of java and python. Thanks for the reply; I guess now I need to find out how to edit papyrus scripts!

So, I use SkyTweak, which some of you may know does not play nice with autosaves. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, since you can disable autosave from the game menu. However, I'm also using the excellent Northern Cardinal mod, which is a ship that you can sail various places. The catch is that the mod executes an autosave every time you sail somewhere new, which, A) messes with SkyTweak, and B) often causes a CTD. Is there any way of getting into the guts of a mod with the CreationKit or TESVedit and simply disabling that autosave? Is there an ini tweak that would do the trick? Is this feasible, or would it break things in other ways? any help is appreciated!

Sorry for resurrecting a months-old topic, but I suggest you try out SkyTweak. it requires SKSE and SkyUI, but in my opinion at least, those are essentials for any skyrim installation. It's similar to BYOG, but from what I've read, more featureful and actively updates to reflect in game changes such as the effects of **SPOILER** any Black Books you might read.

About a month ago I created a custom spell in the creation kit based on Thunderbolt; it's called Eviscerate and adds fire damage to the spell effect. I've been playing with it for that long and it has worked beautifully, but yesterday it inexplicably stopped working when Odahviing dropped my character off in Skuldafn. Specifically, I can no longer dual cast or use it in my left hand; the sound plays, the magicka is consumed, yet there is no furious bolt of lightning crisping my enemies up nicely. I haven't added or removed any mods for about a week, and while reloading previous saves brings it back, it has happened at least once before and I was hoping someone here would have an idea as to what could be happening. This glitch also effects the vanilla thunderbolt spell, but no other spells I tried (ebonyflesh, close wounds, incinerate, etc.). As I said, I haven't been enabling or disabling or even editing any mods other than the ones I've made myself (and those are all things like weapon or armor stat edits) for about a week; the most recent things I installed were "Mitigate HDR Adaptation and disable Bloom" and "Night Eye Overhaul," but the spell worked fine both before and after that. Any ideas? This is my current load order; my home-made mods are all towards the bottom. P.S. is there something I can do in the creation kit to make this happen with a specific NPC, like Serana or Katria in Arkngthamz? I could change Katria's equipment to something sneakier, but she's a freaking ghost, she should be silent already! is there an option that would disable AI detection and combat AI of just that specific NPC?

Basically, I've been looking for a mod that makes followers undetectable by enemies, keep their mouths shut, and not intervene in fights whatsoever. I play an archer assassin; there is almost nothing more satisfying than sniping a falmer off a bridge to fall a hundred feet to the riverbed below, all while 300 yards away. There is nothing less satisfying than a bumbling follower forced on me by a quest who gets themselves detected, suddenly negating any sneak attack bonus and getting us both killed by angry enemies who would otherwise never even know I was there. I find myself wishing there was a dialogue option along the lines of "Since you insist on following me, stay behind me, keep your mouth shut, and DON'T LET THEM SEE YOU." Honestly I don't want them coming to help me in head on fights either because that ends with me accidentally stabbing them, at which point they decide the quest can be buggered and need revenge on the Dovahkiin, who would like nothing better than to slay them on the spot but simply can't because they're essential. I use UFO, but it isn't enough. Sure they don't rush in before you even fire a shot, but they still get themselves detected right when I'm about to cut the bandit chief's throat with my dagger. Seriously infuriating! Is there a mod like this? tl;dr a mod that lets followers do nothing but follow you.
