What's the reason for getting a generation behind hardware? Is it hand me down or used/cheap? If you are building PC for the first time or still not comfortable yet, I suggest using PC part Picker website. Also, I recommend AM4 Platform. That's Ryzen. I say this because AMD promised their consumers that their motherboards will be compatible with newer CPUs that'll be hitting the market until Ryzen 3. Which is great news for us. All we need is a Bios update from manufacturers and new CPU for upgrade later on if you decide it.

Any Total War series. My favorite is Total War: Medieval 2. Otherwise, Homeworld series would be another with endless skirmishes. If you can pick up an original Homeworld games then play that. Otherwise, there is a remake on steam. They are vastly different from the original but there are community trying to fix that.

I doubt there are any such thing as not moddable games. Even games that are designed for online like MMO has a healthy dose of modding community. I've started my first mods for online with FFXI back in 2002. I also dabbled into modding my game from PS1 for Ape Escape.

I'd be Fallout 4 for me because of those mods. I finally managed to isolate the CTD with my current mod builds and now I am enjoying it again from scratch. I think by now I have over 700 hours. Beating my L4D play time of 500 hours.
