Oblivion: Windows 7 vs Windows 10
AllisterHenderson replied to AllisterHenderson's topic in Oblivion's Classic Discussion
Chambcra> Thanks I have downloaded the 'Morroblivion - Mountable Silt Strider.esp' & the accompanying .kf animation meshes :) I have also made a note that this mod requires the Silt Strider Overhaul. Did you see this Silt Strider video too.... Have you tried many other Morroblivion mods for v065 from Morroblivion.com or Nexus? I would be interested to know if Morroblivion Improved functions as intended for v065. -

Chambcra> Sorry to miss-lead you, for some reason I got the two Morrowind creatures; Silt Striders & Guars mixed up in my head  ..... I was actually thinking of the mountable Guar mod by ponyrider0...... there is however a Silt Strider Overhaul by qwertyasdfgh. Both was made for Morroblivion v064 though, so I am not 100% sure if they will work for v065 :ermm: ...probably. Let us know if they do work for your v065. I have them both here -

I haven't played / modded Morrowind for so long I wouldn't know what the recommended mods are anymore... even basic stuff like initial patches/ fixes / memory fixes / best mod manager to use etc. I would have to re-learn what are the current "essential" mods .... Like as you just mentioned... using 'Morrowind Graphics Extender" to remove the distant fog and add LODs. I will have to try and find a good modern NPC/ Player animation replacer. Thanks for those Morrowind mod links, I will probably start there  . The 'mark and recall' spells are a good idea for 'fast travel... I have used similar 'mark & recall spells in Oblivion. That's a good to tip about fortifying speed for Restoration training  . Have you tried any of the other big Morrowind mods like Morrowind Rebirth or Tamriel Rebuilt.... What does you current Morrowind modlist look like? I might use that as a starting point... Thanks for the link to your Daggerfall Unity discussion..... Wow those mods are making Daggerfall look so good, that now, on top of Morrowind...you are making me want to re-visit Daggerfall too LOL. -

Pellape> I understand your position on Oblivion Reloaded (OR). The new features since (v8+), such as the shadows are innovative and will one day hopefully be bug-free... but at the moment there are a lot of issues with the new shaders, causing transparent / flicking/ bright neo colours for NPC / objects, CTDs and other issues etc... There are new memory / heap features in the most recent version (v9+) which is said to replace OSR, however the most recent version (v9+) has removed the INI file and replaced it with "OblivionReloaded.dll.config". This config file is hard to make sense off..... it is in computer code format with EVERYTHING jammed into it. Looking at it, I can't work out exactly what these new memory features are and what they do.... There is also no accompanying documentation to explain these new features such as what feature(s) of OSR it replaces etc.. So for this reason I am still using ORv6.5 (pre shadows). ORv6.5 still has a few bugs but is the most stable / bug-free experience for me... . plus I can still use the original bug-free Enhanced Camera, and ORv6.5 has the INI, so I can use pre-sets. All this talk about Morrowind, is making me want to re-visit it  The things I didn't really like about Morrowind was the weird / slow walking animations, the combat, distant fog, minimal voice acting.... and I know a lot of RPG enthusiasts will hate me saying this, but I like the fast-travel and quest markers of Oblivion. I like to get the quests done quickly, and work out which group of quests I can get done while I am in a particular area. -

Pellape> Thanks for posting those screenshots of Morrowind and Morroblivion, comparing the same spot outside Vivec. The Morrowind Graphic Extender + textures really improve Morrowind visually. The shadows and water reflections in the Morrowind screenshot look awesome. I still think that Morroblivion looks better though in terms of the ground texture and the quality of the buildings. The water looks better in Morrowind.... I am guessing you have water reflections turned-off in Morroblivion and not using any water shaders like from Oblivion Reloaded. That is a good point about the large number of excellent Morrowind mods like Tamriel Rebuilt, being missed out on, using Morroblivion. I do believe there was a few mods on offer at Morroblivion.com, and also a porting utility for porting Morrowind Mods to Morroblivion. There was even instructions on how to use this utility to port Tamriel Rebuilt, but I was never successfully able to do it myself. DaggerfallTeam did a number of mods/ports for Morroblivion and posted them on Nexus over a year ago such as: The Shadowed Tunnels The Brutal Vault Caldera Mine Clutter Monkey Overhaul Morroblivion - Scattered Tomb Morroblivion Improved .....although they were all made for v064, so I am not sure how well they will work for v065. I had a look at you Morrowind Caldera Ancient Mine mod, looks good, and that is a good idea to port to Morroblivion, but I know you have other projects going on, like I remember that Companion friendly Hobbit Home that you was working on earlier this year. Chambcra> I believe you didn't use Morrowind_ob - UCWUS.esp because this plugin was actually merged into the v065 version of Morrowind_ob.esp and I think that Morroblivion_Unofficial_Patch_Magic_Addon.esp was for v064 only. Believe it or not, at Morroblivion.com there was an actual mod that allowed for mountable Silt Striders (like a horse), and had the animations for it . -

Chambcra> Quote: " I absolutely hate the mandatory updates and spying. It's like you don't really own your computer, you are only leasing it from MS when they retain the right to install anything they want anytime" That is EXACTLY how I feel.... If I buy something, I should be able to do what I want with it! :verymad:. Windows is going down the same controlling path as Apple, which is why for mobile devices, I always use Android and never Apple. Thank you for posting the results of your OSR, comparing Win7 to Win10, I appreciate it.. Your results seem to confirm then, that OSR only works on Windows 7, thus providing extra stability for this older game compared to Windows 10. For this reason (plus the telemetry issue) I won't worry about upgrading to Windows 10. Quote: "I'm currently playing Morroblivion" Can I ask which version, v064 or v065? I played v064 a while back. In the v064 I had the following plug-ins : Morrowind_ob.esm Morrowind_ob.esp Morrowind_ob - Chargen and Transport Mod.esp Morrowind_ob - Conversation.esp Morrowind_ob - MorroblivionMaps.esp Morrowind_ob - MorroblivionTreeReplacer.esp Morrowind_ob - UCWUS.esp Morroblivion_Unofficial_Patch_Magic_Addon.esp I am guessing you are probably playing v065, is there much difference in the base ESPs that come with v065, compared to what came with v064 above? Any other ESPs or mods that are essential for v065? I would of asked on the Morroblivion.com site, but it looks like it is abandoned. Chase6> I feel your pain, like Pellape, I miss the retro computers from the 80s-90s too.... -

KatsAwful> I didn't know OSR didn't work on W10, thanks for informing me. I still wish to continue using OSR and OR6.5, so better stick with W7 then. The reason being is because the INI configuration for OSR & OR6.5 is in the simple (easy to understand) .ini format, where the parameters are in a simple list and you turn them off & on with 0 or 1. I don't understand the replacement of the INI with the new 'OblivionReloaded.dll.config' for OR9.0.1, I can't make 'heads-or-tails' of it or how to manager the new OR heap management or manage anything! with it. For example this is the old simple OR6.5 ini The old OR INI is straight-forward in a nice simple format. This is the new 'OblivionReloaded.dll.config' for OR9.0.1 I wouldn't know where to begin managing the Heap or any setting in all of that! it's too complicated, and no documentation. What does "type" mean, what does "Reboot" mean, "Versioning" , Info=""/> mean? What is the FrameRate SmartControl, what is this BackgroundThreadPriority Value="5", is this what you mean by heap management, what does 5 mean... 5 threads?? etc..... So yeah I will continue using OSR and OR6.5, so will stick with W7. Chambcra> Thanks for your feedback. That is interesting about Win10 being better than Win7 in terms of no stutter for Oblivion. I am still a little concerned about the mandatory updates and telemetry in Windows10 though. As was mentioned in the last post by KatsAwful, OSR doesn't work in Win10 though, but maybe I don't need OSR for Win10, if what you are saying about Win10 being better than Win7 in terms of no stuttering is correct. -

PyFFI - Why isn't it more popular?
AllisterHenderson replied to AllisterHenderson's topic in Oblivion's Classic Discussion
To be honest, I totally forgot I even posted this ..... and haven't done any testing with PyFFI mesh optimizing mods. The only "BSA optimiser" I have used is 'Oblivion BSA Decompressor' which just decompresses Oblivion BSA files to reduce loading times and stuttering... Apart from that, I haven't used any optimisers. I use the Mesh Improvement Project and all texture replacers I use are either 1k or 2k.... I wouldn't use 4k, as your FPS will drop badly. You best bet is to look at Oooiii's guide for what texture packs to use. -

Striker879 > Hahaha, yes I still got some old computers from about 10 years ago... like my AsRock P55 Pro, and I think if I look in the shed I might still have my PC build from the 1990s.... a 486DX4-100 MHz / 500 MB HDD and 4 MB of RAM running Windows 95 hahaha  . I still have a bookshelf of old physical disk games before the age of Steam. Pellape > I also tried Linux for a while... the beginner one.. Mint. But the learning curve was too steep, having to learn all of the new Linux commands to use in the terminal... and yeah it was a pain getting windows games to run in WINE, I usually did something wrong... but Linux had some really useful applications though like Gparted etc. One day I might try the STEAMOS, as more and more games are being ported to Linux. Moksha8088 > Yeah Windows 10 is definitely better for newer games.... which is why I will probably do a dual Windows 7 / Windows 10 boot, and run the old games like Oblivion on Windows 7. -

Thanks guys for your answers  ... 1ae0bfb8 > Good point about Windows 7 being out of date.... my main concern with Windows 10 though is all of the included Microsoft telemetry spying features. Striker879> I'm old school too, that's why I am a bit hesitant to going to Windows 10. I used to have a dual boot of XP (32 bit) / Windows 7 (64 bit). I am doing a new PC build now and just questioning whether I should go out and buy Windows 10 or just use my old Windows 7 Installation DVD I brought years ago (when DVD's was still a thing lol).... Included in my decision making involves which windows runs Oblivion better :ermm: . Pellape > Thanks for letting me know that you successfully run Oblivion on Windows 10..... if I can't decide I might do a dual boot of Windows 7 / Windows 10 and test which Windows allows Oblivion to last the longest without crashing, I have the original Oblivion disc set [Collector's Edition]) so won't need to re-download it. -
Just wondering which version of Windows (7 or 10) most people are running Oblivion in 2021. Any pros or cons in terms of stability for either Windows version.......

PyFFI - Why isn't it more popular?
AllisterHenderson posted a topic in Oblivion's Classic Discussion
Been having a look at some of the PyFFI mesh optimizing mods out there, and I am surprised they are not more popular. There is PyFFI Optimization Kit or Oblivion - PyFFI Binary Patch kit or Oblivion PyFFI Automator etc. For the improvements in performance (fps), optimizing meshes with PyFFI produces, I was wondering why these mods aren't more popular. I know that BFG99 initially reported that TES4LODGen was crashing their game here & here but then later determined it was because the PyFFI Optimization Kit was initially generating bad _far.nif meshes before TES4LODGen would process them. ....So need to avoid running PyFFI on _far.nif meshes! Is there any other reasons why optimizing meshes with PyFFI isn't more popular? What is generally considered the best tool for optimizing meshes with PyFFI? BFG99 said, "PyFFI itself comes with better scripts for Oblivion". The current version of PyFFI appears to be 2.2.2 (https://sourceforge.net/projects/pyffi/files/pyffi/). Is this the best version of PyFFI to use? What about which version of Python to use alone side it? BRSullivan86 reported in the posts here that Python 3.2.5 worked okay, but had trouble with 3.3.X versions of Python........ .....So is using PyFFI itself the best option for optimizing meshes? -
Pellape> Glad my post was helpful  Unfortunately that is all the TES4Edit shortcuts I know..... I was hoping that other people might be able to add other TES4Edit shortcuts that they discovered. My idea was every time someone added a shortcut, I was going to edit my 1st post, to eventually have a large compilation of TES4Edit shortcuts that everyone can use.
-
Pellape> Thanks for getting back :) I don't really have any problems, I was just curious if there was any more handy shortcuts for TES4edit. I suppose at the moment I am just opening up the ESP in Construction Set and listing all of the cells in the Tamriel World Space Cell View..... just thought there might be a way to do it in TES4edit as well.

Oblivion Crash -> Event Name = BEX
AllisterHenderson replied to AllisterHenderson's topic in Oblivion's Mod troubleshooting
Hi Oblivionaddicted, Thank you for offering your help ..... Oblivion, seems to be behaving itself... for now... with no more BEX crashes. The problem seemed to resolve itself, when I unplugged a USB flash drive. This USB (128GB) drive is a little faulty..... I am guessing that for some reason when Oblivion was loading, for reasons unexplained it was using this USB drive as a memory buffer to temporarily hold the loading data, and the BEX crash happened due to a "Buffer Overflow" .... the data being sent to the USB drive, was being corrupted by the USB drive, or the USB drive was freezing up unable to accept or send the temporary loading data...... ....My explanation could be completely wrong... just guessing at this stage. All I know is when I unplugged the USB drive, the BEX error is gone  -
