Things have been running relatively smoothly of late with only the occasional crash (watch, I just jinxed myself). The patches certainly have helped. But, I do have an issue that goes back quite a while, pretty much to when I first started playing FONV. Whenever I exit the game, it freezes. I have to use Task Manage to end the Fallout executable under Processes. This happens EVERY time, regardless of how I exit. Nothing is lost, and the game loads fine the next time around, so it is more of an annoyance than anything else, and certainly not a problem on par with some of the issues I read about on this forum that others are having. But, if anyone knows why this is happening and/or has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Sprint Mod Hosed My Keyboard
narcnh replied to narcnh's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Troubleshooting
Would like to say it was due to my amazing planning and foresight skills, but it was actually from the "Learn from your mistakes" school. Decided to set up our new server with a lot of speed and redundancy, but didn't want to spend a fortune, so went to a gaming computer site, CyperpowerPC, and configured this system, which is very nice. It is so nice, in fact, that I have violated one of my own rules and installed non-business SW, namely, FONV. Just couldn't resist. Could be. I actually updated the Setpoint SW that came with the Logitech mouse and keyboard to see if that would help, but it didn't. Just weird how it took a battery pull to fix it. This keyboard has a lot of built-in features - clock, on-bard calculator and the like, so it must have some tiny brain inside that needed to be reset. I should probably invest in another system just for gaming. -
Sprint Mod Hosed My Keyboard
narcnh replied to narcnh's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Troubleshooting
Sorry, probably wasn't clear. I only removed and reinserted the same batteries, did not change them out. So, power was fine. Point taken about data. The system has two terabytes of storage in a Raid 1+0 configuration (4 x 500 gig HD), backed up to another external drive, so there is plenty of redundancy for data. This is a home office, and there are three other synced computers here to use in a pinch, so it's not like I would have been down and out, just would have been a pain-in-the-butt to swap things out. Wasn't relevant to the problem, so I did not go into that detail in my post. Had I plugged in one of the USB keyboards that are floating around here, I would have seen right away that the issue was with the Bluetooth keyboard and not a registry setting. Thanks. -
Sprint Mod Hosed My Keyboard
narcnh replied to narcnh's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Troubleshooting
Well, I never had the problem before with my keyboard, and the only thing that changed was that I added that mod before running the game. It was the first time I ever used the mod, it did not work, I tried to remap the sprint key, my computer froze, I rebooted, my keyboard did not work properly (for several hours), I removed the batteries (eventually), allowed it to reset, and it worked again (and has worked fine since). Given the sequence of events, I'd say that SOMETHING happened to my keyboard, when I tried to use the mod, and the events are related. My guess is that there is a problem with the mod and a Bluetooth keyboard, but that is just a guess. -
Sprint Mod Hosed My Keyboard
narcnh replied to narcnh's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Troubleshooting
Fixed it. After trying a number of remapping tools with no luck I went old school and removed and reinstalled the batteries on the keyboard (wireless). Duh. That fixed it. Hopefully, this might help someone else in a similar situation - try the obvious before losing your mind. I am removing the spring mod and 'sprinting' from it as fast as I can. -
Decided to try the sprint mod. Installed, but it did not work. Tried remapping to another key, Still nothing. Tried to set back to default (Run key). Game and system locked up and required a hard reboot (power off). When system came back up found out my keyboard has been remapped permanently and some keys do not work (e.g. Backspace, Arrows, Letter 'o', Period, Letter 'g' types letter 'd'.......). Tried system restore, no luck. Tried settings vis regedit (using screen keyboard), nothing. So, right now I am completely hosed and my primary computer is useless.. Am typing this in my netbook. Keyboard is a Logitech MX5500. Mouse is a Logitech MX Revolution, both Bluetooth. Any ideas? This is my main computer, also used for work, so this is serious. Thanks.

Just downloaded and installed NVSE beta6 and it worked immediately, but good to know that option if I run into problems. Did a quick check and all my mods seem to work. Will have to wait until tonight to run it through it's paces. Thanks to the folks at Silverlock for such a quick turnaround.

Well, glad to see I'm in good company (or not, depending on your perspective). Saw the post on the Silverlock site. Meanwhile, 'sprint' mod intrigues me this does. Investigate shall I.

Tried to run FMM just now, and got an error message for the NVSE Loader: "You have an unknown version of Fallout. Please check http://nvse.silverlock.org to make sure you're using the latest version of NVSE". Checked, and I'm using the latest version - v1.0 beta 5. Did FNV update? If so, it would be nice for STEAM to let me know that. Any ideas/comments/recommendations? Soooo, if it's a version issue, if I run the game without NVSE, any impact, if eventually I get the new version and install? Thanks,

How to do a clean re-install
narcnh replied to narcnh's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Troubleshooting
Thought I would post my results, in case it might be useful to anyone else. After uninstalling completely. scrubbing the registry, reinstalling from the DVD, using NVSE and FOOK to install my mods, and starting a new game, I was able to play through both Dinky/Dino Bite and REPCONN. No freezing problems. So, now I am through those quests and on to better things. A shame it killed several days, but such is life. The only problem I have now is that whenever I exit the game, it freezes, and I have to use Task Manager to end the FalloutNV process. It's an annoyance, but I can live with it. Thanks to all those, who offered advice. -
Whenever I verify integrity of game cache I get a "1 files failed verification and will be reacquired" message. Steam then downloads a file and reports success. This happens EVERY TIME. I have uninstalled everything, cleaned the registry, reinstalled from the disc, and run the verification before ever running the game and still get the message. Can run it 5 times in a row and get the same message. Any ideas what file keeps failing? Game runs, except for the freezing at Dinky and REPCONN in my first playthru. Am starting from scratch to try to avoid the freezing, and it would help to know if the two issues are related. Crash at dino bite store
narcnh replied to MoonHoplite's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Troubleshooting
Thanks, tried your fix, but still have the same problem at Dinky (stuttering audio, stop action video, unresponsive - have to end via Task Manager to get out). Also at REPCONN, but that is a side quest and not such a big deal. Can't move forward without talking to Manny (and I don't know where/when this problem will happen again). Have tried with all mods enabled and all mods disabled - no luck. Already running v3 of FOOK as original install. When I verify integrity, one file is always bad and gets reacquired, even if i verify over and over without running game. Right now i am dead in the water after 16 hours of game play. Really bites. And, i waited to purchase until the patch was issued. Hehe. Nice pun. Try redownloading the FOOK. Copy + paste, use new fook. Save in a room (new save, not overwrite). Then load the new fresh save. Then wait 4 days. Then new save, then try it again. I have a problem though. Novak settlers who sit on the ground, appear to be floating a bit (few inches off the ground). Im not sure if it's an official bug, or mod. Glad you caught that. Thanks for the advice, tried it (waited 5 days, just to be sure), but still have the same problem. So, something is seriously wrong. I've posted my next steps under my post 'How to do a clean re-install' Again, thanks. -
How to do a clean re-install
narcnh replied to narcnh's topic in Fallout New Vegas's Mod Troubleshooting
Thank you very much, LM, that was exactly what I needed to know. Unfortunately, after doing the 4-day FOOK wait (still had the problem) suggested by MoonHoplite and then the complete uninstall and reinstall from disc, I STILL have the problem. I guess my save files must be corrupted. One thing I noticed is that, whenever I do the 'Verify integrity of game cache...' check, it ALWAYS returns that one file is corrupted and will be downloaded. Even after the new install from disc. So, I'm not sure what's going on there. For my last trick I am going to delete all saved files, purge all unused .dll files, do another clean install, and run from the beginning. Hate to lose my progress to date, especially since the success of the solution is unknown, until I get back to Dinky. But, that's life. FO3 was my favorite game, and I never had a crash while playing. Of course, I had never heard of mods, until I stumbled across this forum and have always played all my games (e.g. Dragon Age, Half-life...) completely vanilla. I only tried playing with a handful of mods with FANV (also FOOK, NVSE and fomm), but maybe something went wrong there? Might try vanilla, get to Dinky ASAP, see if I can enter, and, if successful, save and THEN try adding mods one at a time. Anyway, thanks again. -
Have tried over and over to get past the broken scene entering Dinky to go talk to Manny - have reinstalled twice, but Steam keeps downloading from the net, rather than installing from the DVD and puts all my old Mods back. I want a clean, vanilla install from the DVD, even if it means I lose all I have played so far and have to start all over. Do I have to open a new account in Steam to get to a clean install? Frankly, I hate Steam and would much prefer to run without it, but I don't see how. Thanks.

Just posted a reply in the Dinky crash thread, but thought I'd mention here that I still have the problem after trying your fix. Thanks, anyway.
