Correct, the 8th held the rearguard. That was an obvious mistake on my part.
Incorrect, the Redguard expelled the Domminion on their own. The quote above clearly says otherwise.
Epilogue: Hammerfell Fights On AloneHammerfell, however, refused to accept the White-Gold Concordat, being unwilling to concede defeat and the loss of so much of their territory. Titus II was forced to officially renounce Hammerfell as an Imperial province in order to preserve the hard-won peace treaty. The Redguards, understandably, looked on this as a betrayal. In this, the Thalmor certainly achieved one of their long-term goals by sowing lasting bitterness between Hammerfell and the Empire.
In the end, the heroic Redguards fought the Aldmeri Dominion to a standstill, although the war lasted for five more years and left southern Hammerfell devastated. The Redguards say that this proves that the White-Gold Concordat was unnecessary, and that if Titus II had kept his nerve, the Aldmeri could have been truly defeated by the combined forces of Hammerfell and the rest of the Empire. The truth of that assertion can, of course, never be known. But the Redguards should not forget the great sacrifice of Imperial blood - Breton, Nord, and Cyrodilic - at the Battle of the Red Ring that weakened the Dominion enough to allow the eventual Second Treaty of Stros M'kai in 4E 180 and the withdrawal of Aldmeri forces from Hammerfell.
While General Decimus can be credited for leaving troops there, the veterans who were left behind were not only no longer officially fighting for the Imperial Legion after the treaty, they were effectively disavowed. The Redguard did not defeat the Thalmor alone but in the end, it was Hammerfell, the Alik'r warriors and the former members of the Imperial Legions left behind, who drove the Thalmor out. Officially, the empire cut its losses and ran.

One thing I noticed in Blood on the Ice quest, though it is an exploit and it really should be patched, is that if you are a pickpocket, you can continually pickpocket and sell the strange amulet for 500 gold each time.

Gift?! The only thing guards ever gave me was an attitude. :(

noo i will be 5 years older and goodness knows if i will be still alive :(
Don't worry. You'll probably still be alive in five years though depending on how addicted to TES games you are, you might wish you weren't. :P
I don't care where the next one is at so long as they don't keep the craptacular UI from Skyrim. It needs to add flying, levitation or at least climbing. Curse you four foot tall rocks!

I find it silly that every ancient sealed off tomb has fresh fruit and vegetables.

I do agree that it is easy to see there are many reasons why summary executions would occur in the situation. They don't want to go through the hassle of a trial. They cannot risk transporting him too far because he is a flight risk. They wanted to make a show of force and intimidation. Still, it is very easy to see the value in keeping a live rebel leader and his retinue for information on remaining hostiles, at least until the conflict cools down.
With Tullius and his chance, I really don't see it as him giving you a chance so much as him sending you away to get yourself killed. Who sends a lone hobo to kill off a bandit camp thinking they'll really succeed? Not that the Stormcloaks are much better with their ice wraith hunting initiation. What ever happened to a simple physical? The fact that you do come back alive and victorious would make them idiots if they didn't keep an eye on you.

I love the thalmor. I keep my house stocked full of them so I never have to worry about not having decent corpses to use as deadthralls.

Walked past a giant fighting a bandit. Giant smacked the bandit and he flew. I began walking away and it landed thirty seconds later three steps in front of me. I made a note to myself to never melee a giant after that.

The 8th legion was destroyed doing a rear guard action while the emperor retreated from the IC. The soldiers left behind were discharged veterans from the failed campaign to expel the Thalmor from Hammerfell. Saying it was the empire that drove them out is disingenuous since the empire renounced its ties after the people and the vets rebelled. At that point, Hammerfell really was on its own.

It still doesn't excuse the summary execution that followed. It is one thing to shoot Osama while he is trying to escape but it is another to kill him and everyone around him after they all surrendered, stripped off all their weapons and have been handcuffed. Even if there is no trial, they are bound to have plenty of information about the remaining forces worth listening to. Everything the empire did after the ambush was just sloppy.

Draal fah vokul: Pray for evil
Opens an Oblivion gate.

Actually, it was said by that guy on the cart with you that you walked into an Imperial ambush.
Ah. My bad. Must have missed that part. Why the hell do the Stormcloaks have a hobo and a horse thief travelling with them?

I like Oblivion better. The UI was functional and I wasn't blocked left and right by impassible rocks when I went exploring. Spellcrafting made spells useful no matter what level. People were also nicer in Oblivion, even the daedra.

This make the Oblivion Gates seem pleasant. At least you can get rid of those after a while.

I believe this is one of the radiant quests that never stops. It'sjust there as filler really and as an alternate way to get access to orc strongholds.

Not that I am taking sides in this but Elisef was the wife and would not likely have accepted her husbands death as just if he had died without being hit by the voice. Balgruuf meanwhile hated Ulfric and would likely have called it murder regardless of the circumstances.Furthermore, a duel for kingship had not occured in sometime and feelings towards such acts were likely to be frowned upon. No one had fought over the title of king for as long as anyone could remember.
As mentioned earlier, the use of the voice in a fight was likely seen as obscene not because you are not allowed to use it in a duel so much as its use outside of the esoteric study of the Way of the Voice was widely disapproved of by that point. It was like being granted a boon to be closer to god and then using that closeness to kill your fellow man.
As for the player, it was clearly stated you were captured trying to cross the border, not during the ambush that caught Ulfric. You weren't in the same building as Osama, you were a hobo in the same state. You were pennyless, dressed in rags and fleeing to Skyrim because your life sucked in the place you originally came from. It wouldn't be an issue if you were simply arrested but they chose to just have you killed because they were too lazy to fine, deport or imprison you.

Nine out of ten NPCs in Skyrim are jerks. I'm a Thane in five cities and the only people I can rely on to give me a warm greeting are the beggars after I give them a gold coin. Every time I see a guard I want to shove an arrow in their other knee.

I'm not thrilled about it being missing but it isn't too big a deal since it looks like magic is taught differently in Skyrim. Illusion does not govern paralyze. Necromancy isn't banned. Since alteration is used in skyrim for defense, it may simply be that summoning daedric items isn't in vogue in Skyrim and perhaps the rest of Tamriel. It makes sense since alteration doesn't require knowledge of heavy armor or blocking to be effective. There are also few battlemages in Skyrim and summoning in general seems to be held in especially low esteem after Oblivion.
The lack of spell creation however irks me to no end. As nice as it is to have each spell perform in a unique way, it does not help if you cannot use most of them in a fight because they have lost effectiveness. Even if Beth wanted to eliminate spell creation no matter what, they should have put some mechanism to adjust the damage of the spell. A sliding bar that increased mana cost for increased damage/lvl/duration would have sufficed.

I'd just pick any race that fits your sense of aesthetics. Magic is affected more on your birthsign and skill level than race. Dunmer isn't a bad choice if you are looking for an early boost though. Atronach is more the preference of power gaming. It is great if you want to go for the 100% absorb magic builds though.

Just took a stroll through Oblivion and realized how open it felt compared to the cramped spaces in Skyrim. Mountains didn't block my way so often. It was fun to explore through swimming. The streets were wider. The horses actually felt useful. I get the feeling in Skyrim, they sacrificed too much open space in order to accommodate the added detail.

If you are part of the college of winterhold and have at least 90 conjuration you can get enchanted daedric items relatively early on without crafting.
The atronach forge armed can make various daedric items with the proper recipe.

I actually read an interesting observation regarding the base power of the Aedra vs the Daedra. I can't find the source though. The thought was that as a group, both sides started equal but the power of the Aedra birthed by Anu was concentrated in fewer individuals than the Daedra who were products of Padomay; nine or so Aedra if you included Lorkhan and fifteen to seventeen or so Daedric princes. Individual aedra were on average, more powerful than individual daedra. This is only a theory of course and it doesn't hold up that well when you consider how Aedra can die/turn into daedra thus putting the numbers into question. It is still an interesting concept to ponder though.

No. It is just a quest that is relatively easy to do to pick up a quick couple of hundred gold while in the area. It isn't limited by the merchant gold limit so it is quick if dangerous money for low level characters.
-
My counter to that is that while the Aedra are weaker/limited compared to their original power, that does not necessarily mean they are always weaker than the daedric princes. We simply do not know what kind of power the Daedra or the Aedra truly wield; only some dubious limits and behavior that are frequently contradicted or circumvented.

Best Dead Thrall Candidates?

Dead thrall has better returns as you level up since new enemies in dungeons generally get stronger the more powerful you get. I'm not sure about the named NPCs though since some have static levels. If you are doing the mage guild quest though, you have at least two thalmor and a dark elf worth enslaving by the end of it.
edit: In any case, don't forget to arm them with staves as backup weapons, especially if they are relatively low level.
